m68030 Posted June 3, 2002 Posted June 3, 2002 Ork 'Portal' Mmmmm. trippy. Driving bass line and drums with a happy little chippy lead line dart all over this Amiga game remix. mutagene is my hero. Quote
mDuo13 Posted November 28, 2002 Posted November 28, 2002 This starts out with a breif piano melody, but it isn't long before the techno beat kicks in. Cool slow strings and good synths (especially one that sounds almost like an ethnic instrument) make their appearances. Pretty good use of reverb, too. This is a good song, but that little thing that makes it a GREAT song is just a little out of reach... Quote
Jugulator Posted December 7, 2002 Posted December 7, 2002 I haven`t heard the original soundtrack to this game yet but I really think this is a nice song with a catchy melody and definitely is worth downloading! Quote
jordex Posted January 15, 2005 Posted January 15, 2005 great piano intro moving into a trancy style with some strings and claps very cool melody definatly a great song Quote
Trump Ice Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 Download this song NOW! Awesome, catchy, calming techno song. One of my favorite ReMixes. Has been for a while. get it. NOW! Quote
Kefjkarp Posted August 6, 2005 Posted August 6, 2005 This could very well be my favorite mix in the archive. It's that good. A playlist without this song in it is like a vacuum on steroids: It sucks muchly. I give it a 10/10. Quote
Ventrex Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 My head hurts and I should definitely be cooking, but some of the sounds used in this mix are really trippybleepily delicious. I hurt for words to describe them, but a thousand tactile sensations come to mind (the strongest being a kind of multicolored rubbery candy plastic). Definitely a good sign when a mix induces mild synaesthesia. Quote
OceansAndrew Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Great piano intro, but from there, the sound quality goes a bit downhill and whether or not the sounds are all presets, I can't tell for sure, but it gets really bad, IMO, though the arrangement is very good. A pretty clear oldskool mix that would be awesome if the sound quality was updated. Quote
Liontamer Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 I didn't like that chiptuneish lead very much; didn't mesh well with the other instrumentation IMO. Transition to the piano at 1:38 was very nice though; I could have used more of that. The beatwork changing up more often also would have been a nice touch. Melodically though, I liked the direction this went in. Quote
DragonAvenger Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Sounds are definately chiptune-esq, but I don't think it's that bad. They work as they are, though a sound update would be very nice. The song is quite catchy, the melody especially. I was able to really enjoy listening to this song, whether it was in the background or I was actively listening to it. Worth getting still. Quote
Tex Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 I love it a lot. This is really a fun song. I could never listen to it only once at a time; it is quite loopable. I disagree about the comments mentioning sample problems. This mix is perfect as it is. Truly mutagene goodness. Quote
Bahamut Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Interesting mix - it reminds me of djpretzel's Revival Day Impoetus, but perhaps a bit more repetitive and a little more upbeat. For a song so long, I feel like it could use some more variation. Otherwise, it's a pretty nice song. Quote
Muvon53 Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 A very good remix with chiptune influence - I like Quote
Crulex Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 This really is catchy and fun to listen to. Nice blend of electronica and some chiptune inspired elements.I actually enjoy the retro vibe of this mix, but I do have to agree that more of the piano and a bit of a sound update would have made this incredible. Plenty of great ideas and the arrangement is damn good. Liked this one a lot, actually. Nicely done. Quote
Dyluck Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 Don't let the low OCR# of this mix scare you. Yeah, okay, there's a lot of very dated MIDI-ish instrument voices in this one. But, it's very dated MIDI-ish instrument voices used well. mutagene knew what could be done with the seemingly basic tools at hand and he made us something that, yes, as djp said, will stick in your head for decades. True facts, here in 2023, with this ReMix being on my playlist for well over 15 years. That piano intro and square lead hook in particular do it for me. The ReMix as a whole is understated but very groovy. Listening to this track makes me wonder about all of the Psygnosis games (that aren't Lemmings) I missed out on playing when I was younger, because the music that underlies it speaks of some grand epics in amazing universes. Even though I don't know the original piece of VGM, I feel like this ReMix adequately holds a mirror up to it. Speaking of reflections, I would also say that this ReMix is a great representative of the ancient OCR sound. How far we've come, but how much we still have to learn from the old days. Quote
