OCR04964 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Rose Gray"
MegaMixtape replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Amazing! I can barely believe my ears. I love when talented Japanese artists participate in OCR, and this is just what I needed to hear to close off a rollercoaster of a year. Definitely anime opening (ending?) vibes here. Stickerbush keeps on finding ways to evolve and it never gets old, thanks to the creativity from people all over the world. -
It never got out of just the concept phase, but I had asked for series pages, so we definitely should have something like that, especially we have series in the database. Problem is we need coders who are available, and we don't have those. :-D

It would be nice to tags for series, at least for the popular ones, as a quick way to get all the remixes of a series. We can get all the remixes for a game or a publisher or a composer, but not series. Want every Castlevania track? Castlevania tag! Want every Mega Man track? Mega Man tag! Etc. I suggest tag specifically as a mechanism instead of metadata like composer because not every game is part of a series. Makes sense to me to use a tag for metadata that could be considered optional.

Howdy, here's my track. The source is Kirby's Epic Yarn - Snowy Fields https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XhjH2RCEQ1ECXwpORlO01gn2Z5UIwJpx/view?usp=sharing There's a nonzero chance I'll send a tweaked version down the line but mentally it's good to get this off my plate by sending this verison.

I have to say, as a long time listener, I think the OCR community is putting out some of their best stuff ever these days. -
2025/10/24 - Donkey Kong Country "Azurite Horizons"
prophetik music replied to prophetik music's topic in Judges Decisions
opening xylophone doesn't really have any velocitization on it, so it's very mechanical initially. same feel for the conga, there's some repeated hits from that which feel machine-gun. the filtering to make it feel more underwater is a really clever touch, and the acoustic that fades in with the bells handling the arpeggio is a nice feel. there's definitely more in the right ear here, which is a little confusing. percussion comes back in for the transition at 1:49, and the feel moves towards reggae or island. the plectral instrument in the right ear here doesn't seem to have verb on it, so it's sticking out of the mix a bit among all these other very verby elements. and then we finally get the melody line at 2:30 - what patience! i love it. i do thing also that the lead needs more reverb as well, same reason as above. there's another deep drop and build - the sonar pings are inspired, and i really like the big bass hits that are so far away. really neat spacing here. guitars and drums come in at 4:00 for a pretty big build. the rhythm guitars that hit at 4:15 are too dry and loud, but i really like the idea. and then the lead comes in soon after, and it's louder than everything else combined - way too loud. needs to be turned down drastically. the spacing of the lead in the original (or in Vig's arrangement from the DKC album) is a good demo of where this should sit in the mix. it's well-played, but it dominates the soundscape. coming out of that, there's a bit more of the 12-string, one more sonar hit, and it's over. what a creative, interesting arrangement! really shows the breadth of the original's composition that we can still get really solid, unique mixes all these years later. i think that there's a ton of story in how you approached this, and the variety of realization elements you've used is really fun. i think if you do some cleanup - more velocities to the opening xylophone, avoid machine-gun repetition in the opening conga, fix verb levels on some instruments, and then turn down the guitars and especially the lead guitar at the end - you'll have an all-timer. and fixing the mono issue described above would be a meaningful update as well. so close! can't wait to hear this one a second time with a few tweaks, as it'll be amazing. 2025/10/24 - Donkey Kong Country "Azurite Horizons"
jnWake replied to prophetik music's topic in Judges Decisions
We begin with some waves and congas before a dulcimer-ish instrument starts playing the main Aquatic Ambience arpeggios. Fun vibe to start, I don't think the congas' sound quality is particularly high but it still works fine. At 0:54 we move underwater and a somewhat loud clean guitar enters the soundscape. AA arpeggios continue on the background. At 1:52 vibe starts slowly shifting into some sort of reggae mood, which is established at 2:20. A synth lead plays the main Aquatic Ambience melody here, after 2 whole minutes! I feel the drums and bass are a bit soft here, but they get better after a few repeats. Love how this sections sounds, the laid back style with the synths playing melodies and flourishes is a great combo. There's another change at 3:15 with a big break. Arpeggios once again are the main element here but there's some bass wubs on the background. Guitar returns around 4 minutes in and after a bit of build-up we get distorted guitars! Mood is still quite chill though. A lead electric joins a bit later, playing the main AA melody. I love the change-up around 5 minutes in, sounds Tool-ish. At 5:16 the rock section ends and once again we focus on piano for the track's end. Arrangement is fantastic, we go through a ton of several moods during the 5 minute duration so it never gets boring and a lot of the sections are very memorable. I don't really have any nitpicks! It's great that people can still come up with fun ways to reinterpret these sources. Production is also mostly great, mix is clean and most samples and instruments sound good. Clean electric guitar, as pointed by Chimp's vote, is the main issue, it's super wide and also kinda loud (plus the mono issue she highlighted). Overall, fantastic track! I absolutely love the arrangement but sadly I think the one present production issue may be a dealbreaker. Rules don't really state anything specific about your track having to play well in mono but on the "Production" item we have the following: With this in mind, I feel a song not playing properly in mono may be enough to reject it, as much as it pains me. Like Chimp said I hope you can look at an alternative way to produce the electric guitar section since this NEEDS to be on the site. NO -

This song slaps! I didn't know that this was a song that I wanted, let alone NEEDED! amazing work. "I absolutely feel that this song needed to exist?" I wholeheartedly agree. "but I really don't think I was the right person to do it." I wholeheartedly disagree, you were exactly the right person for this! - Yesterday

@Xouman At least, it doesn't work the way I'm used to with Google Drive links and direct downloads. You have to go to your Google Drive first and select the uploaded file you want to share with the public. To the far right of the file, you will see an icon with three dots. Click on it to display an option for setting the file sharing parameters. If sharing is still restricted, change the restricted status to a status where anyone who knows the link can download the file.

As part of Mega Mixtape's Feature Length album project, I've been taking a trip down memory lane, highlighting all the Donkey Kong Country tribute albums that I've enjoyed growing up. That includes all 3 OCR albums of course. However, I also used to burn my own CDs as a teenager, with tons of individual remixes from the site. I might go into more detail for each of them, and how they made a difference in my life, if I find the time. But for now here's the first list of oldies but goodies.

That synth and percussion work is glorious. The shift from the opening to the main beat in the middle was cool, and it makes sense to shift back at the end. Damn good arrangement for a very nice ReMix. -

Wholeheartedly agreed that this gives me some Wind Rose feels big time and might be my favorite take on Jib Jig so far. This is gorgeous and perfect for setting off on a kick-ass adventure! Highly recommended and playlist bound.
