  2. The whole thing about the video game realbook is that it's a collection of lead sheets, not piano sheet music or some other thing like that. Just melody and chords. Great for a jam situation. Which, I do happen to be working on, and am happy that there is this conveniently located thread of suggestions to include that I need to get working on.

  3. Decades ago jazz musicians began circulating a 'book'... a sort of underground compendium of the chords/melodies/lyrics to lots of jazz standards. It was organically assembled and shared over time, with no single definitive version sold by anyone. (I guess it was an inevitable product of the invention of the photocopier.) Today, though, publishing companies have gotten on board, done the legwork to get publishing licenses, and offered "Real books" for sale... Personally, I think the internet makes a lot of the impetus for a Real Book obsolete, but it's a nice thought... I mean, I'd be happy to see a VG Real Book (OCRealbook?!) on my bookshelf, but I'd probably rarely open it, ha! ...or would I? But honestly, unless one of a few people just did the huge task of making it by themselves, I just see lots of potential for song selection and notation arguments.

  6. I think it's finished. I think I'll submit it to OCRemix today or tomorrow. Edit: Finally submitted, as "Seagull Sonata"

  7. So I've started my entry project. Are we getting a lot of participation on this one? I'm just gonna leave this here. I hope you guys enjoy my first PRC Remix entry I have been pretty eager to jump in on one of these. I did get a bit carried away with some of my Psychill beats but thats the fun right?

  8. A vg realbook is an interesting thought experiment... but here's my imaginary set list / jam list... Zelda - Great Fairy's theme (how could you open with anything else?) Metroid (NES) - Brinstar (letting them know you're the OG) Mega Man - Snakeman (push that opening energy) CT - Millenial Fair (feels good mane) CT - Secret of the Forest (take a breath, learn some forest secrets) Zelda - Song of Storms (everyone's drunk on forest secrets, touch them inappropriately with zelda) Earthbound - Onett (there's the sunshine again) Sonic - Green Hill Zone (crowd pleaser) Sonic 2 - Chemical Plant (because you've got the chops, and ice cap is too short) Super Metroid - Lower Brinstar (darkness brooding again) Super Metroid - Lower Norfair (rock. and. roll.) Yoshi's Island - Underground (we're safe now, extended jam time) Mario 64 - Dire Dire Docks (rising back to the surface with some melody) Super Mario Word - Overworld (because NES 1-1 is too cliched at this point) DK - Stickerbush Symphony (a cheer goes up from the crowd) CT - Corridors of Time (of course) Zelda - Darkworld (the crowd wonders when the show will end, but they don't mind because zelda) Kirby's Adventure - Butter Buildings (seriously when is this going to stop, ooooh shiny!) DK - Aquatic Ambiance (crowd forgets their evening plans and decides to follow you anywhere) Final Fantasy - Prelude (misc FF suite so you don't get shanked after leaving the stage) Final Fantasy III - Altar Room Final Fantasy IX - You're Not Alone Final Fantasy any - Chocobo Final Fantasy VI - The Decisive Battle Final Fantasy VI - Terra (bring them to their knees with your sweet overdriven nectar of life, walk off the stage) CT - 600 AD (encore, let the tears flow)

  9. Ah, Legend of Dragoon! Good game, good game. This was one of those games my oldest brother had and I played, but didn't have the chance to beat because he moved out and took it with him. I did get to beat this game finally within the past year or so, and enjoyed it very much. Having the chance to listen to this song outside of the game showed me just how fitting this theme was for Rose. Anywho, I had to get my entry done quick, as I won't be able to work on music for the next week starting tomorrow. I went for a slower, hip-hop/R&B type feel, with some synths thrown in the mix later on. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8-q7hg2GtQPczk3MmduTEEta1U

  12. Just a thought, but has anyone tried posting about this compo on reddit or something? My thinking is that as traffic to OCR seems to be slowing down, It would be wise to extend to other popular social media outlets to keep participation up. Just an idea. You could probably copy paste some of the formatting.

  14. The main battle themes of Final Fantasy I, IV, and VI. That classic bass line was even called out in the Scott Pilgrim movie. (It's in a bunch of other FF battle music, but I don't expect them to be as well-known.)

  15. eval: There's some odd timing choices that I think could be smother, but other than that I really like the writing here. Starting the whole track at a later part of the source was a great idea. On the other hand, the mixing is horrible. Horrible. Level, eq, panning, reverb; they're are your friends, don't be afraid of them. The 1:45 bit is especially bad in this regard. I can't tell which instrument I'm supposed to listen to. The sound design is cool. Really cool. You just gotta bring out the right instruments out of the messy mix to let all the elements really shine. Source is there, handled creatively atop the original chord progression. It works well, both recognizeable and clearly made your own. I don't think you'd need to do much more than clean up the mix and maybe sort out some of the note timings in the early parts of the mix, and then it's ready to be subbed imo. Nice work.

  17. Sorry for getting to this one so late, holidays and all! mod review (2017 1st edition) Nice work with this one! Given that the source material here is so minimal (it's really only one melody line and then a bit of a latin rhythm motif), I think that you've done a really good job at keeping things varied and playing with the source material! You've used a ton of different sounds here to keep things interesting, and the mixture of synths with electric guitar is always a great package deal in my opinion. Awesome guitar performance here! Interesting that you don't really introduce the "main" melody until about half way through at 2:47 in the guitar. Not a deal breaker for me as I can hear how you've kind of used bits and pieces of it through the piece along with a ton of original ideas. This track seems to be ever unfolding which I find a lot of remixes in this style have trouble accomplishing, so great work on that. Nice build to the finish line, and a very smart choice to bring the melody back in as it really ties it all together! Overall great arrangement here! You've done an amazing job of keeping things interesting with so little to work with. I feel that it's maybe a bit loud for my taste, though it's definitely a kind of "in your face" remix. You remedy this with a couple of nice break down sections however. I particularly like the one at 2:04, but even it is pretty frontal and loud. Hard to say without seeing a wave form on this one, but it might be something to look into as my ears were pretty taxed after a few listens. I'd say this one is ready for the panel!

  18. Following this thread. This is more or less a list of "If there was a VG Realbook, it would need these tracks in it." And since I'm making one of those, this could be useful for that. Butter Building (Kirby Series) Lost Woods (Ocarina of Time) Overworld (Every Super Mario Bros.) Ending (Super Mario Bros 3) Chocobo Theme (Final Fantasy) Slider (Super Mario 64) Tetris A and B Themes The Moon (Ducktales) Fourside (Earthbound) And I'll stop there for right now.
