  1. Hey OCReMix peeps, Wanted to let you know about something cool that's happening this week. I'm working on a record with Troy Baker (The Last of Us, Uncharted 4, Bioshock Infinite), and we've been streaming from the studio 4 hours a day, all week. It's been pretty cool. Basically, you get to see the process of making a studio record. We're live broadcasting the band as we do takes, make creative decisions, and get into overdubs. Troy is known as a voice actor, but he's a pretty damn good singer, and a great songwriter too. And the band is slaying. Anyway I've talked this thing up enough. We'll continue streaming every day until Sunday, 12-2 and 5-7 PST. http://twitch.tv/TheTroyBaker

  3. Borrowed chords, like 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree mixture, right? JohnStacy's points are correct - if you substitute one chord for another that functions similarly you'll rarely go wrong. I'll expand on this topic a bit, though, since there are other interesting ways to move into mixture and borrowed chords (and even beyond that, sometimes). Being a counterpoint junkie, I'll start there: if the counterpoint works, the chord progression works. Thus, if you transition into unique chords using solid voice leading the chord won't feel out of place. This is why there's a notable amount of Rennaisance music (Palestrina, Gesualdo) that has some pretty strange chordal patterns, and yet sound pretty natural in context - they never worked one music harmonically, only contrapuntally. If all else fails, good voice leading will smooth everything out. There's another related point of view (Neo-Reimannian) that dictates that the fewer notes that are changed, the less jarring the transition will be. Thus, if you only change one note from one chord to the next, no matter how much mixture is involved it will not sound out of place. Change two notes and it's a middle ground between jarring and not jarring. It's a logical yet interesting manner to get some cool mixture involved - lots of Romantic composers used this method of generating some pretty unique mixture. Those are a bit heavy on the theory, so one final rule of thumb: just use the chord in question, and if you don't like it, change it to something you DO like. You'd be surprised just how poignant an effect some of this can have if you just experiment with them; the 'hard and fast' rules on how to use them are a bit dated, anyway. It's nice to know that there are rules on the use of mixture, but really the only 'rule' you need to know is that there isn't really a restriction on their use. Hope that helps!

  4. Trying a genre I haven't done before with this one! Hoping I can get it done and polished up this weekend.

  5. Rather than a direct post, I'm moving this to the panel to give my feedback and criticisms. The mixing lacks highs, so there's a lossy, distant sound to this. I would have liked something more to the melodic treatment, but what's here is OK due to an effective genre adaptation with some new part-writing thrown into the mix. The original breakdown from 1:06-1:27 was OK, but the texture felt thin despite everything going on. 1:45-2:15 sounded like a cut-and-paste of :00's lead guitar with different drumming underneath. This gets by, but should have been developed further. Would love to see you explore the possibilities of longer arrangements some more with future subs, Mike, and also brighten up the soundscape a little just so all of the strong performances sound cleaner and more upfront. 6. Preferences > Output > select Nullsoft Disk Writer > Choose the directory location for the geenrated file > For "Conversion", check the Covert to Format box, then select the desired format (I'd use PCM with attributes 44.100 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo (172kb/sec) Then play the file as you would, and Winamp will convert it to a WAV instead of playing the audio. Watch for not having the file itself play on an infinite loop or having the playlist loop.

  7. 3 out 3 three, I am on a roll today. Anyway, yeah, I remade this as well. Again, using only Morphine and a drum loop. Okay, and a Directwave Accordion, but who cares? Also, 50's Electric Guitar is good for EVERYTHING. Here ya go, reviews are welcome as usual. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1cNg5GTkCUIbVhlMmZkTThjdjQ

  10. Hey everybody, Garpocalypse is nearly done with his Horteka/Ixa'taki remix but he needs someone to assist him in a specific thing: (in his words) some heartfelt Native American Stereotypical Wubba-Wubba's. So if anyone could coordinate with him and record those things for him. That'd be AWESOME. Oh, and do let me know you're doing it so I know someone has answered the call!

  11. it is true that it's entirely based on opinion on what is considered to be the victor, but that's what I like about MnP honestly. You're not supposed to worry about changing things up (that's what PRC is for), it's about who can portray the same emotion better whether it's within there own style or not. I can understand if people think its bland to just follow the original track and midi but that's what this compo is. Personally, I use MnP as the testing grounds to either create original sounds or combine multiple layers of sounds ( that I don't normally use) to form them as one. For example in the first 30 seconds of my piece, Only 2 instruments are playing in the midi but I'm actually using 4 instruments (not including effects). If I'm not doing this method mentioned earlier than I'm practicing to play this live on my midi piano or by simply training my ear to remake the song and try to only use the midi file as a fail safe. if I'm just getting a lot of notes wrong ( which is more often than not) then I'll just bite the bullet and use the midi. I feel like the whole point of this compo is to find better ways to improve yourself without the need of sweating things out or the need to be a try hard, At least that's how I see it. Like its not that big of a deal if you win or lose or even if you felt like you got robbed, I don't see things that way. I only see what needs or should've been improved on if such situations were to occur.

  12. That's my computer! =D For anyone seeing this thread thinking about having a computer built, Brad was awesome! I just got a job out of school and actually have disposable income now so I wanted a custom-built computer. I know virtually nothing about hardware, and Brad answered all of my countless questions, and also offered a lot of other great advice and feedback. 10/10 would buy again.
