  2. The People's Remix Competition 344 PRCv14-06 Hello everyone and Welcome to the People's Remix Competition! The sixth round of this season already. PRC343 just ended. Before that, PlanarianHugger was the winner of PRC342. By default; when his song was uploaded everyone else though 'there's no way that I can beat this song so there's no use to enter anymore'. So it was PlanarianHugger who got the right to select the source for this round, PRC344. Source: Mega Man Battle & Chase – Duel (PS1) MIDI Source Information ThaSauce link: Click here to submit To submit a song at the compo page you can use the ThaSauce page. If you use this, an account is required. If you don't want to use ThaSauce, please upload the song somewhere else and post a download link in this thread. Of course you can also upload it somewhere else and put a download link in this thread. Do not make qualitative comments on an entry until the results of the vote have been posted in this thread. Mixers cannot vote for themselves but if they vote they receive a free first place vote added onto their score. The winner of this round may select the source for PRC346. 3. I'm terrible at coming up with names for pieces, so if you have any suggestions let me know. Midna's Lament is like the best theme from Twilight Princess in my opinion and it was begging to be orchestrated. This project's been sitting around on my hard drive for a long time as I hit a roadblock at one point, but recently was able to pretty much finish it. It ended up sounding kind of snow or ice-themed. Here is the link (aif) Another link (256kbps mp3 instead) Source

  4. Hmm. If there is enough interest, we can still make the Andross collab happen ... but who is else is willing to commit to help build the framework? The idea I had for arrangement was to start with the base intro with voiceover in SF SNES, then either medley the various Andross themes in different styles (my arrangement was SNES, 64, Adventures, then Zero) or choose one theme and run with it. I just know I need to work of Bad Weather before I can work on this. If someone else can help out in building the base framework for the track, then it should not be as much of a pain for the rest of us to build on the rest. If anyone wants to give it a try, go for it. I won't mark it claimed until there is a working WIP.

  8. I don't intend to make it a contest, because a] judging would be difficult given the nature of the challenge and b] I don't want there to be a winner, the prize is finishing and any new tricks you might learn along the way. If there's a more appropriate forum to put this in, I don't mind it being moved, but I didn't see a better place for it ^^; As for the rules, I hadn't thought of soundfonts, but I don't really want to include that because those would be limited to certain DAWs that support it. Damn near everything can use WAVs though. Here's the complete rules from the Discord server:

  9. Very intriguing sample situation; the sample you chose to loop gives the whole track a very interesting, syncopated sound. Likable, surely, but not quite used to its full potential here. In the future, I'd either slow the sample to the tempo of the track, speed the track up to match it, or do both and meet up somewhere in the middle. Or just choose a more easily looped sample from the beginning and really work the track around the sample instead of just working it in. Both parts are good, they're just not quite reaching their full potential used together here. Not bad, though, especially for a start. I know the first I made was worse. The beat itself is pretty solid; its composition works quite well, despite the unorthodox percussive choices, which can often ruin a track's beat, but really worked in its favor here. Overall, just keep moving forward with this type of stuff; take my criticisms, and my advice. Develop and learn staples of your sound and how to apply them best. I applaud you for choosing Eterna Forest, though, honestly. Sinnoh had the best soundtrack in the Pokemon series, and this is one of the best tracks.

  10. ...I still plan on getting the SF version of Andross up...when ever that will be... Might be a straight rock cover (with horrible FL Slayer, yay!). Might use a boss intro from SF64...not sure...

  12. Borrowed chords, like 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree mixture, right? JohnStacy's points are correct - if you substitute one chord for another that functions similarly you'll rarely go wrong. I'll expand on this topic a bit, though, since there are other interesting ways to move into mixture and borrowed chords (and even beyond that, sometimes). Being a counterpoint junkie, I'll start there: if the counterpoint works, the chord progression works. Thus, if you transition into unique chords using solid voice leading the chord won't feel out of place. This is why there's a notable amount of Rennaisance music (Palestrina, Gesualdo) that has some pretty strange chordal patterns, and yet sound pretty natural in context - they never worked one music harmonically, only contrapuntally. If all else fails, good voice leading will smooth everything out. There's another related point of view (Neo-Reimannian) that dictates that the fewer notes that are changed, the less jarring the transition will be. Thus, if you only change one note from one chord to the next, no matter how much mixture is involved it will not sound out of place. Change two notes and it's a middle ground between jarring and not jarring. It's a logical yet interesting manner to get some cool mixture involved - lots of Romantic composers used this method of generating some pretty unique mixture. Those are a bit heavy on the theory, so one final rule of thumb: just use the chord in question, and if you don't like it, change it to something you DO like. You'd be surprised just how poignant an effect some of this can have if you just experiment with them; the 'hard and fast' rules on how to use them are a bit dated, anyway. It's nice to know that there are rules on the use of mixture, but really the only 'rule' you need to know is that there isn't really a restriction on their use. Hope that helps!

  13. Each time you borrow a chord, it's a specific sound and context that it works best. Generally, when you use a borrowed chord it is to suit that context. For example, using a tritone substitution to go from something like Dm7-G7-C could be substituted as Dm7-Db7-C. You could apply that any time you had what would be a 5-1 movement, but it wouldn't sound right in many different places. The same thing goes for things like a lowered 6 degree, like having an Ab chord in the key of C. It sounds nice, but if you just throw it in there without wanting that particular sound, it will just sound weird. Basically, know all the borrowed chords you can, know what they sound like to the point that you can recognize them without thinking when listening to things, then use them in places where you think that kind of sound would work well, and also where it can still make sense.
