Methinks Yahtzee needs to stop reviewing games that he has no interest in in the first place. Makes for less funny and more predictability. On that note I really hope he steers clear of FFXIII when it eventually comes out.

Could not agree more. On all points. I never really understood everyone's problem with sailing. I always thought there was just enough stuff (subs, platforms, islands, big octos, etc) to explore along the way to wherever it is you're going that it never really got boring. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the game's number 2 gripe, the difficulty. As much as I loved WW, I always hoped it would just throw something crazy hard in my face, like a darknut that does like 5 hearts damage. Or a boss that doesn't follow the typical formula of "use new item, then hit it with your sword". But it never happened. The kiddie difficulty is the game's only real flaw, IMO. The final fight, though? Amazing. Even if it also wasn't very hard.

Audix - One Day Millennium album release on Protagonist Records
Scufo replied to Sole Signal's topic in General Discussion
I'm not usually much into trance, but this is really good. Like really, really good. Visions in particular sounds awesome. Money is extremely tight at the moment but I'll buy this album at some point! -
So I tried this...with varying degrees of success. Thing is, the roll is a mid attack, so they usually block it. So now I'm starting my next one, and they're free to pound me while Lizzy flails around in the move's startup animation. So just mashing B+K didn't work so well. BUT hitting A while in the position does produce a nice quick low attack that no one ever blocks (and the thing's so fast they probably couldn't even if they wanted to, especially if there's lag). I found that mixing that move in A LOT (as in more than the roll) trips them up pretty good. Then if they ever decide to block low you can go right back to the roll. Cheap? Yes. Broken? Not so much.
-
So I guess lag is pretty much entirely dependent on distance to your opponent? Because there's no lag whatsoever when I play against someone a few miles away. Being able to GI online is niiiice. Also, did Tira have the whole bipolar thing going on in SCIII? Because it's a really cool mechanic and I'm going to make her my alt now because of it.
-
Am I the only on who thinks this is a good thing? SC3 had a lot of balance issues, in part because there were so many movesets what with all the create-a-character ones. Without them, the devs can focus more on the main characters' movesets without worrying about balancing upwards of 10-15 more that you won't even see in the main story. That's my theory anyway.

Weezer is emo now what? EDIT: To actually contribute to the thread, I don't at all like what I've heard from The Red Album. Pork and Beans I don't like, no matter how many pop culture/internet references they can cram into the video.

It'll probably be good as long as it sticks to the tried-and-true formula, but they're gonna have to show me more than what I've seen so far to get me to pay ~$175 for a Rock Band clone. The way I see it, you can't beat Harmonix at their own game.

Are there any games you guys play over and over again?
Scufo replied to atmuh's topic in General Discussion
Games I've played through many times: Zelda: Ocarina of Time (including a 3 hearts, nothing that's not necessary to beat the game run) Metroid Prime Super Mario Bros. 3 (a few sittings) Super Mario World (one sitting) Final Fantasy X Donkey Kong Country 2 (a few sittings, unless I'm trying to get everything) Pikmin Phantom Dust I'm also on a never-ending quest to Catch 'Em All™ in Pokemon G/S/C, which I pick up every now and then. -
One year on guitar. I still consider myself a beginner but I've already performed so I guess that's something!

Okay. Then I agree. Your comment from before implied that Brawl's lackluster online play is actually the fault of the consumers for requesting the game have online play in the first place, and that Nintendo couldn't have done anything to make it any better. I didn't have particularly high expectations for online Brawl either, but I expected more than what we got. It should have been a lot better, and the sad part is the game still sold like hotcakes. So there's not much to persuade Nintendo to make improvements on any future Smash.
-
Oh wow. This logic is downright scary. Developers listening to consumer demands? It could never work! Just look at Brawl! I mean, it's not like the entire Smash Bros franchise is tailor made for Nintendo fans or anything. Stop trying to justify Brawl's shitty online play.
-
Well we pretty much already know the review would consist entirely of him bitching about blue shells so maybe it's for the best. This review was kinda short on the funny but I agreed with it for the most part. It's the first I've heard anyone complain about how Rockstar brought it back to Liberty City.

Banjo is Back! "Nuts and Bolts" detailed!
Scufo replied to SwordBreaker's topic in General Discussion
Setting my expectations veeeery low on this one. My reaction to the trailer was very "wtf". Rare's golden age is long over, after all. -
Well, son of a bitch. Snake for broken tier.

k. 1.) Since Smash 64. I got it within a few months of it coming out. Checking Wikipedia reveals that was back in 1999. Nine years ago. So I was nine at the time. 2.) Nope. Nothing official, anyway. There's not much of a scene in the suburbs. 3.) I was a pretty hardcore fanboy (read: idiot) until my eyes were finally opened by the PS2. So at first it was just seeing all the Nintendo mascots in one game that made it awesome. When I discovered the competitive scene for Melee, though, my attention shifted to SSBM's actual worth as a fighting game. So what I like about the series is seeing Nintendo's mascots beat the living hell out of each other in a way that's deep and strategic. I also very much like that it's damn near impossible to do anything by button mashing, unlike traditional fighters. 4.) I can't think of anything I dislike about the series in general. The SSB formula works just fine. That's not to say each specific game doesn't have its flaws, though. 5.) What I like about Brawl: Good character selection. Seems more balanced than Melee, though the tiers are becoming more rigid every day. I like the new airdodging system for the most part. 6.) I dislike the game's general lack of support for the competitive community. Specifically: TRIPPING. Too low hitstun. Loss of L-cancel. Half-assed online play. 7.) I acquaintanced myself with Melee's advanced tactics but never got much of a chance to play in a tournament setting. Like I said, there's no scene here. I only know casual smashers. I'm off to college in Boston after summer ends, though, so I'm hoping there's a scene there. Plus, it's a hell of a lot easier to get into competitive Brawl than Melee, given the easier learning curve. 8.) To take my Zelda to the top! Well, not really. Mostly I just want to get into the scene and see how I do in tournaments. Actually winning and making money would be a nice bonus, but I can't really consider that a goal until I actually get into the scene. I enjoy Smash much much more in a "serious" atmosphere, so I'd definitely like to meet some non-casuals to hone my skills against. 9.) Well, I'm a pretty competitive person, so I try to get good at any multiplayer games I play. Starcraft in particular comes to mind. But to answer the question, no. 10.) The biggest problem with the Smash community is the prevalence of people who fail to educate themselves on the games' workings. I gotta say, the majority of Smashboards is pretty painful to read. I swear there's a new "FINAL SMASHES SHOULD BE ALLOWED" thread every day. Even still, like cobalt said it's not nearly as bad as WoW. This is only going from what I see on Smashboards, though. 11.) Nah.

I was expecting a GTA4 thread to pop up at some point. I guess that kind of treatment is reserved for Wii games. Anyway, just played some online with my brother and it's a blast. Having an open city in single player is great, but sharing it with friends is a thousand times better. There's a certain kind of satisfaction that comes with plunging a helicopter straight into another player's car and then watching everything erupt into a gasoline-powered inferno that only GTA4 can achieve. All of the modes I've played so far have been a lot of fun, especially the coop ones.

undergrad and graduate work - where are you going?
Scufo replied to prophetik music's topic in General Discussion
I'll be attending Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston where I'll most likely be majoring in computer science. Music isn't part of my plans but I'll still be bringing my guitars to college. Boston has a pretty rockin' music scene. Who knows what could happen? -
@ Garde: Of course Din's Fire is easy to dodge. No one ever said it isn't. But actually hitting people with it isn't always the priority. The value of Din's is to keep the pressure on the opponent which, thanks to its amazing range, can be pulled off constantly. Zelda, in this way, MAKES you approach her, which I think is an asset in a game as defensively oriented as Brawl. One thing I've noticed is that, because of Din's strange hitbox (hits outside of the actual explosion if it travels a fair distance) is that people will very often airdodge when you set it off near them. If you use Din's on an opponent returning to the stage from above (which happens a lot, thanks to floatiness), you can set it off early, hopefully causing them to air dodge right into your waiting usmash. Given, skilled players will know exactly how large Din's hitbox is at a given moment, but this is just one example of how Zelda's pressure game can be used. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, as a Zelda main, that all of her moves are useful. You're the first person I've heard say she has bad aerials. Yes, fair and bair are harder to sweetspot now, but skilled Zeldas can and do still do it.You might whiff five of them and then hit one, but that one would be worth it since it's just such a powerful move, even more so than in Melee. Her uair has a disjointed hitbox and is absurdly powerful. Dair is a very powerful spike. Again, sweetspot, but you really just have to learn the timing. I have spiked successfully with this move, though admittedly, not very many times. Still though, combined with Din's this move gives her a very powerful edgeguard. Whoa whoa whoa whoa WHOA. What? First off, since when is a move instantly branded useless just because it's slow? I guess the vast majority of Ike's moves are jokes, then? Regardless, Zelda's moves are NOT slow. You saying her smashes are slow lead me to question whether you've actually played a Zelda of any decent skill. Dsmash, Usmash, and Nayru's Love all come out almost instantly, and can be used anytime an opponent gets too close for comfort (thus the mentality that she's hard to approach). Not only will these moves get the opponent away from you, but usmash and dsmash are good KO moves too. Usmash KOs off the top at around 120% and unlike her fsmash, cannot be DI'd out of easily. The knockback of her dsmash is almost entirely horizontal, leading to mid-percentage kills with edgehogging. So not only does Zelda have great and many finishers, but they come out fast too. Dtilt. At high percentages it pops them up above you and sets up into usmash or utilt, both great KO moves. At low percentages, it VERY often causes the opponent to trip, allowing you basically a free ftilt or fsmash. At middle percentages it pops them in front of you, which also leads into ftilt or fsmash. Dtilt can shield stab, too. In spite of all this, I don't expect to see Zelda on the top tier (nor do I really want to). She still retains the same basic weaknesses she had in Melee (lightweight, limited mobility, escapable fsmash, even if it's harder now), but she's been buffed so much in just about every other aspect that her weaknesses are diminished. She's really a contender this time around.

Bandwagon much? Come on Sega. This shit isn't cool anymore.

OCR's 1st Super Smash Bros Brawl Tourmanent
Scufo replied to Arek the Absolute's topic in Competitions
So is this tourney going down the tubes or what? I'd hate to see it fail because a few people aren't playing their matches. Also a bracket update would be nice.
