OCR01033 - Final Fantasy VIII "Fantasy Rush"
OceansAndrew replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The arrangement is pretty rockin' here, and some of the samples are old school and great, and some are old school and need some tweaking. I'm totally feeling the drum beats, and the drum samples work pretty well I think too. They aren't kick-your-face-in punchy, but they have a great character to them, and the hats are nice and crisp. Diggin it. -
Garageband actually has some good samples if you can figure out how to best highlight them. Every one of my mixes on the site has at least 1 Garageband instrument in it, and usually all you need to put on them is a stereo delay or a little bit of reverb. Hit me up with a pm if you want specifics. Usually you can tell a bad sample from a good one by the amount of character it has, and what kind of minuscule flaws it contains. A good sample will have all kinds of inaudible but perceivable flaws that make it sound more interesting. A lot of the "natural" Garageband instruments like brass and woodwinds don't really have these, but you can add them with effects, or just use them in layers to make the sound more interesting. Some of the Garageband samples that are really good, IMO: *Electric Piano has surprisingly good velocity levels and gets a nice and warm distortion at really high velocities. *Pretty much every analogue synth kicks ass, though that might just be my own bias. :3 *Steel string guitar is pretty good if you keep the velocity low and don't go too high up in the octaves. *The various drum kits are pretty weak, but can be good if layered. I use a ton of the misc percussion from here though. *The piano isn't very good, but if you don't have anything better (like me), layer it with the equally not-good strings and it creates a pretty nice sound. The real improvement with Logic over Garageband is the effect plugins, really. Even the basics, like reverb and delay are 100x better, even with the cheapy version of Logic.

OCR01843 - Civilization IV "Destined for Greatness"

That's why I love asian pop music. All of the hooks of domestic, but I can't hear how terrible the lyrics really are. -

OCR01842 - Doom II "Icon of Sinwave"
OceansAndrew replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow, that source song is wretched. Very crazy and exceptionally well done intro to the remix, and I need to echo the sentiment that it exudes quality but really isn't for me. I love the processing, soundscapes, and completely over the top craziness. I'm not sure i'd ever want to put this on a mix cd, but this is the kind of stuff you don't expect to inspire you that really does. If I ever go to hell, this would be a pretty cool soundtrack to it I think. -
OCR01839 - Final Fantasy VI "City Corner Lullaby"

Very classy work, the presentation of this really made me take note of the melody, and appreciate it more. I loved the additional tone colors you've added in the chords, and I really wish it was longer, but it's so easy to just repeating it. Very subtle and nuanced, I absolutely adore this one. -

Great stuff, beautifully done, etc. I loved the little lion king reference, and the synth introduction was . I haven't heard much new from my homies, so it's awesome to hear what you've been working on. Kickass stuff guys, I loved the rocking end, and everything about this is quality. -
Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes killed (C&D story not proven)
OceansAndrew replied to Kiyobi's topic in General Discussion
This is hilarious drama and that C&D is so so fake. The wording is stilted, the citations are anemic, and no legal department would sign without placing a single representative responsible. If all of the SE's C&D letters were as such, without any accountability, it'd be a complete nightmare for them if a disgruntled ex-employee decided to steal some. Large corporations are masters at CYA, and this is just bad. -

I'd be willing to take a shot at this- it's pretty rockin; mind if I add a few counterpoint ideas in? -

Great work, classy and witty arrangement, as well as some pretty good performances. The choir was a highlight for me, and the inclusion of the radio version of the theme was great as well. I can't wait to hear your crew get even better, and i look forward to hearing more on OCR. -
OCR01015 - Cool Spot "Smileyspot"
OceansAndrew replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Well, i'm a little early for the 7-18-09 review, but it'll be ok. Dang, it's short! It's cute though, with the singing and whistling and the charming happiness. I'm not sure whether or not this could be developed further without having it lose a little of the carefree attitude, so the fade is fine by me in this case. Sometimes, you just gotta fade, you know? Fun stuff, I love how Mazedude always challenges himself to try new things, it's pretty inspiring to me. -
OCR00751 - Final Fantasy VIII "Desperados"
OceansAndrew replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is my kind of dance music- I completely love the hardcore speed. The changes and additions that occur throughout are really subtle, and the sound could be a little more polished, but the energy present is amazing. Super props for doing this in Buzz, It sounds pretty great. -
The brass is the only real weakness hear, and it's only some articulations in the more exposed areas. Overall though, this really shines as a thoughtful and creative mix. The builds are awesome, and the tempo shifts are very natural sounding. Accelerando + crecendo leading to a ritardando is such a great combination, and it was pulled off repeatedly without flaw. Awesome work all around, I think that the goal of bringing the in-game midis to life was easily met here, this is really emotive and has several facets. Awesome work.

OCR00744 - Final Fantasy VI "Enchanted Esper"
OceansAndrew replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The electric guitar sample hasn't aged well, but the rest of the mix has a great hypnotic quality to it. Drums are well programmed and hold the mix together, and the transitions are pretty good as well. Not my favorite source, and that guitar bugs me, but otherwise a very competent mix.
