  1. I wasn't sure what I'd think of this when I read the writeup, but I was very pleasantly surprised. It starts out innocuous enough, with some nice drums and piano helping keep the track grounded in reality while the synths do their thing. As pretty much everyone mentioned, once the the lead comes in, it gets way better. Even though it's a pretty repetitive track, there is enough variation used to not get old, and if you are looking for something that corsses the line of old and new school effectivly, this is the mix for you.
  2. Great percussion! It's panned all over and headphones make it even better. I am inclined to agree that part of the charm is the repetitive nature of the song, and it ends before things get out of hand, but I personally like a little more variation from the source. The harpsichord that comes in is a little loud, but otherwise everything else is excellent. Very catchy flute melody, and the strings sound good. Recommended.
  3. Though the synths are SNES era (especially that oboe, yikes!), and the sequencing is off in a few parts, the source is pretty nice. I havnt heard the original, so I can't compare it to the mix, but my guess is that it'd be pretty similar.
  4. The reverb is a little heavy on the drums, but they are interesting and well programmed. The beats are all very interesting and add to the source instead of just feeling tacked on. It's a pretty faithful interpretation of the theme with a few nice variations near the end, and some good samples. One thing that was distracting was the harmonic feedback from the bells at the beginning; it was somewhat distracting, and made them sound electronic rather than natural. The length is just about perfect, as it ends before overstaying. A nice take on a classic theme.
  5. Very straight ahead in a good way. It has everything it needs to remain interesting, including the undulating arpeggios, frequent chord changes, and a catchy melody. I'd have preferred a more interesting drum part, but it keeps the song moving without too much difficulty, and there are several sections and variations to keep things interesting throughout. The synth quality is a little too lofi for my preference, but it does provide a bit of charm, and is endearing rather than annoying. Old school sounding but good.
  6. WAAAoohhhNoooothanks. The crowd in the background panned all over the place talking is a great effect, but it's too short to be enjoyable. A fun reminder of the site's roots, and a potentially cool idea, but far too short.
  7. Inexplicably one of my favorite mixes on the site, this is like deep fried macaroni and cheese, hold the macaroni, and with extra cheese. I think the part that really appeals to me is the syncopated space in the bass synth, and the smooth transitions between the sections. Just a note that syncopated bass can defeat any sort of evil or win the prize in any sort of reality TV elimination show without even trying ( I would never exaggerate this for any reason). There is also more going on besides just a verse chorus verse, with a post chorus, bridge, and then a variation on the chorus. The synths are old school but effective, and the drums aren't incredibly exciting but they do the job just fine. Highly recommended.
  8. The heavily delayed and looped harp sample really does give this an unique feel, and there is a pretty solid energy to this, but why oh why did you use that choir sample? ;_; I'd have prefered the drums to mix things up a bit from time to time, but there was enough breaks to give things a sense of structure. The synths were overall well used, and the traditional sounding instruments blended well. There was a few ideas I thought you were hinting at that never materialized, and that's a shame, but I think things turned out just fine. Nice work.
  9. There are some nice parts of this, like the mandolin, but the production leaves a lot to be desired. The guitar is a bit too loud and near every instrument is muddy, especially the drums. The new genre of music is fine, despite the other reviews, it's just that the reinterpretation doesn't sound clean at all.
  10. A little weird for my taste, there is nevertheless some very interesting detuning occurring here, and it really fits the quirky feeling of the source tune, only magnified and amplified. The drums are very interesting, and mix things up well, and well, I don't know about the synths, but this is definitely a creative work and I'm certain that if you are a fan of the game, this will appeal to you in some way.
  11. Fast and frantic, This mix is heavy on the style at the expense of substance, IMO. More a series of arpeggiated chord progressions than a specific melody, with a good deal of sound clips, there's nothing bad about this per se, but it just isn't what i'm looking for in a mix. The synths are all well done and interesting, but I just couldn't get into it.
  12. This is incredibly good. Totally party music, the beat is infectious, and the saws are very tasteful. The best part of this mix (besides the beat) is the sense of space. Each instrument is respectful of each other, and there is a lot of variation between sections, most notably the trade offs between the saws and the flute. The piano is nicely handled, and all of the samples are clean and pretty high quality. Nothing here not to like, so check it out.
  13. There is some cool stuff going on in this mix, especially the distorted bass, and the guitar playing, but that chord that just hangs forever smothers it completely. Sorry.
  14. Stepping out in style, this mix successfully marries traditional Japanese instruments to a club track, giving this track a confident swagger that's both unexpected and refreshing. The drums are perfect; especially the snare slaps, and actually mesh very well with both the meandering synth arpeggios that seem to pan all over the place, and the buzzy lead line. Normally im not a huge fan of street fighter tracks, but this one really won me over.
  15. There is always something interesting going on in a Mutagene mix, but i'm just not feeling this one. It starts out with the source original, and from there some different synths are applied, and some effects, but it still remains pretty much the same with a stucatto bass and languid lead. The drums in themselves are nice but don't mesh well, and compared to his other work, this one seems like a throwaway.
  16. A somewhat bouncy mix, it has a much more retro feel than a Russian one, though that's certainly the issue of the source tune. Everything is well sequenced and mixed here, but for some reason it seems just kindof generic to me. The chorus is nice, and there is some subtle panning, but even after about 5 repeats, it left me just kindof meh. Personal preference I suppose.
  17. THough the beat simply goes on and on, there is a good deal of inspired work here, from intertwining synth riffs to a shimmering, flickering, bell part. It sounds like the source was pretty short to begin with, but there is a decent amount of arrangement. It really doesn't stand up to repeated listens though, there needs to be a change in the drum patterns.
  18. Can't say i'm a huge fan of this one. Sorry. There are some good parts to be sure, but the out of tune lead guitar and the somewhat aimless arrangement left me wanting more. The clean guitar tone was nice, and it was really densely layered, but it seemed to go in circles.
  19. I gotta comment on the intro.. Why would you be typing while waiting for a modem to connect? Reality aside, it really set the mood and was a great way to start a very strong mix. I love how it switches so seamlessly from the rocking parts to the softer parts, and how the alarm matches the beat. It has a great flow, kicking from hacking to action and back again. The drums change beats several times, keeping things interesting, and the samples all around are fantastic. Recommended.
  20. I simply adore the squiggly lead line here. The sound is fantastic, and very unique. The rest of the track moves along at a good pace and features plenty of interesting elements. The guitar sounds really good for a synth based one, and though the drums are a little muddy, they are well programmed. The intro arpeggios are also fantastic. This is a pretty unfamiliar game with a strange remix title, but it's really good. Give it a shot.
  21. A galloping Rhythm section and tight leads with a bit of orchestral goodness? Sign me up! The track was well produced, though I would have prefered the Strings to have a little more bite to them; the attack is too slow for this driving style of music. Other than that, there isn't much to complain about. The guitar performance is good, and there is a ton of energy. This one is going on my workout mix.
  22. The intro was super muddy, but it did open up nicely into an upbeat synth rock piece. I agree with an earlier comment that this would fit in well at a football game. It doesn't deviate from the original very much struturally, but it is the perfect length, and the dramatic conclusionfits very well. I'd have prefered some higher quality synths, because the arrangement is great, but for what it is, it's an enjoyable piece of music.
  23. cool arcadeish intro that sets the mood well, and you can actually hear when thematically you'd put the quarter into the moonpatrol game. I admit I thought it stagnated a bit until there was a nice solo section right before the ending, but if you loved Moon Patrol, this should bring back some good memories.
