  1. Funky for sure, but a little repetitive, at least until the slap bass comes in. I'd have preferred a little better sample here, but it's a cool line, so the somewhat annyoing sample is forgivable. Some of the melody lines such as the flute seemed a bit forgettable, and I'm not sure if changing the instrument would help, or if it just needed to be rewritten. Not my favorite zelda mix, but the bass line saves it from being mundane.
  2. Relativly dense, this could pass for new age if it wasnt for some of the lo-fi synths in some sections. It certainly fits the title, as you can easily imagine a slow descent into the earth. Not really my style, but I can't deny that the mix is good. The bass and drums are really nice and have a very hypnotic effect to them.
  3. Not what I was expecting at all, and far far better than the claustrophobic sneakfest I had envisioned. This is super spacious, with some great rhythmic interplay between the drums and bass, light washes of strings the rise and fall, and beautiful piano. I really like the sparing use of the left hand piano, normally i'd consider it to be on autopilot , but here it not only fits, but enhances the material. I don't remember the original at all, but I simply love what i'm hearing. Highly recommended.
  4. Possibly the only mix of this song (out of the thousands) that would be even close to passable today, this is really creative stuff. While I disagree with a few choices made, mainly the clipping effect that runs for much of the song, and the synth used for the solo 2/3 through, this is colorful and unique work and deserves a listen.
  5. One of the million and one "far promise" remixes that i really can dig, even with synth guitar. Oh synth guitar, how I loathe thee.. This one is kept short, which is just as well, since there isn't a huge amount of source to work with. The piano is nice, and there is some cool panning synth in the heavier parts, but this one is showing it's age.
  6. Starting with Synths that soar above a solid bassline, this mix only gets better when the piano melody comes in. The production here is very good, most notably the piano. I love the shimmering sound that is created, and it really helps the mix's atmosphere. About halfway through it switches to a electric piano sound, which is also perfectly suited. My only reservations would be that the flute seems a bit piercing, and i'd like to hear a bit more low end on the background synths, but overall this is a fantastic mix.
  7. One of my favorite tracks from Lufia 2 given the ultra moody treatment by DJP. I seriously can't tell if it is just a great (possibly best) synth guitar tone or if it's simply a great guitar tone, but along with the washed out sounding drums, the mix really does convey a mysterious feeling. The harpsichord lends some extra interest and texture, and the song starts out straightforward and eventually branches out into new territory, all of which fits the theme well, even the military style march section. Recommended.
  8. Piano mixes are one of the hardest ones to keep interesting, and this mix does a great job here by cycling through several themes and adding a lot of tiny embellishments. Very relaxing with enough interest to keep you awake. There are some nice tempo changes throughout.
  9. There are a ton of fantastic surprises in this mix! Though the chopped and panned rain at the bottom gets most of the credit, the creative processing of synths throughout, filtered beats, and overall sheen are equally worthy of praise. The breakdown and buildup is especially effective, and though I am not a huge fan of the 8bit sounds, they work very well in the context of the mix. Very inspiring.
  10. One of the first mixes I remember really sticking out, this has a great peaceful feeling, and sounds like an ending theme. It is a bit repetative, but it is simply fantastic to groove on, and though the variation is subtle, the music is catchy enough to carry it, and the rhythms blend together well. A bit simplistic, but a fun mix.
  11. Funkysmooth, this is a mix that has the winning combination of solid samples, and a master funkologist at the helm, piloting us on a magical funked out tour. It seems that other reviewers had the similar feeling I have about this track. You just feel compelled to invent new words to describe it. The grooves are solid, and Peeples wisely lets them simmer a bit while adding layer after layer of infectious pads, synths, and bass. This is a super awesome mix, hands down.
  12. Great percussion, especially during the piano solo! The brass is good, if a little overly similar to the original, but the mix really shines in the creative differences made when deviating from the source, namely the great drums throughout. ...too short though. :/
  13. Jazzy and fun, this is a great bite-sized Mustin track, and one I could easily imagine in an animated short for Pixar. My favorite part is the piano; great flourishes throughout. It sounds very off-the-cuff, and improvised, even though it was all planned. The brass is tastefull and lends itself well to the samples used, and the bass is vibrant and fun. My on;y complaint is that like most of the earlier mixes on the site, it could stand to be a bit longer. Overall, a "damn good" mix.
  14. Deep. Anything you could want from a ambient track and more, this one really brings the goods. Each element of this, whether it be the drums, pads, or synth melody line has a nice sheen of polish, and each has been perfectly reverbed, creating a super spacious sound. This sounds especially good on headphones. Recommended.
  15. The sonar in this track gives it a somewhat underwater feel, but everything else is a little too dry to complete the mood. There are some pads that get the feel across, and the drum sound is good as well. One issue, however, is that the rhythm on both the drums and electric piano seems really uneven. It sounds more like a sloppy performance than a conscious descision, IMO. Though it is both detracting and distracting, there are a lot of elements in this mixthat are well done, especially for such an early work.
  16. The mix starts out very inspired with some very nice plucked strings, but once they fade, things get a little more mundane. It's still a relaxing mix, and it's difficult to mix something that Falcom has remixed itself so many times, but the delayed piano keeps things looking up, and the sweet sounding chimes are a great touch.
  17. A quiet, contemplative piece, this would totally fit in at a spa while I get a relaxing massage. Ahhhh so relaxing... The strings are great, and the ambient chimes and soft harp really set the mood. A little to the left; ah there we go... However, the ending is a total copout and really did the rest of the mix a disservice, IMO. I would have even preferred a fade, as that would have fit the style better, but the sudden single basson note and drum hit (soft as it was) was jarring, and even though I got a pretty good massage, I was kinda hoping for a happy ending (heh, jk).
  18. The is definitely a gem that I missed during my initial torrent downloading of the entire site. While the track starts out normally enough, it evolves into a great catchy melody, and about halfway through an uber sick breakdown hits, filled with delicious and nutritious funky bass and what sounds like a synthy steel drum counterpoint. A synth solo is the dessert of the mix, before going back to the main melody. Num num; this is tasty!
  19. A pretty nice mix that doesnt deviate a ton from the source, but does a really good job of filling out the sound, and giving it a more evocative quality that the original only hinted at. You can really imagine yourself in a bustling little fishing town listening to this. While I was never very good at the game, I do have fond memories of this song, and though the remix doesn't reinvent the wheel, it does the original justice.
  20. I know It's like having a lot of spicy chicken wings that are delicious. Once you have a certain amount, you want to eat more, but your body just can't handle it. It would literally explode into meaty chunks. That is like this mix. I want to listen to it more, but if I do, I will explode (literally) into meaty chunks.
  21. This is a great epic metal song, but the reverb is completely out of control for a studio recording. However, it sounds like it was played live, and that is pretty cool I suppose. I can't think of many remixes on the site which have a distinct live feel to them, but it's something that makes this mix stand out from the other castlevania metal remixes. The guitar playing is clean enough, though some of the Rhythm playing could have been a little less muddy in the EQ; it seems to be pushing into the lead's space. The solos are good and well composed, and not even the cop out fade at the end detracts. I dig it.
  22. Buzzy and a bit repetative, this is a perfect GOA trance feel, and would work great for a fighting game soundtrack. This really is ninja pummeling music. The ending was abrupt but it worked well enough, as this would be either mixed in with other tracks, or the sudden end of a fight scene, where the victor would pose with a flourish, while the room full of beaten ninjas would wallow in despair.
  23. A pretty close interpretation of the source, but as it was mentioned earlier, after hearing something of this quality, it's really hard to go back to the original. I like this even better than the vocal arrangement in the original soundtrack. The piano reminds me a bit of Dale North, but the rest of the elements make it really your own. Regardless, this is fantastic work. Highly recommended.
  24. This one is nice, it mixes peace with agony really well, and my only complaint is that the drums are pretty crappy. I even like the distorted guitar synth, as it is used sparingly and tastefully. The acoustic guitar arpeggios are especially nice, and anchor the track very well, and when the aforementioned guitar synths come in, the air-raid siren sounding synth that comes in lends an understated urgency. Bad drums or no, this is cool stuff, especially coming from early 2002.
  25. One of my favorite tracks from the game. The mix is really nice, but the flute is killing me. It's way too piercing. The ambience is great, and the song has a fantastic mood, despite being short. I'd love this song forever if it didn't physically pain me to listen to.
