  1. Nice showing again dudes, well done! Both these albums are still in my favorites. I'll take my sandwich on the veranda.
  2. Basically, you can't just cover it with different instruments. You've got to do something to make it your own. I think a good example of something that isn't particularly different from the original in terms of the actual notes is bLiNd's Jenova Celestial mix, but it's very well adapted, with genre specific additions and breakdowns but with always some kind of connection to the original. 50% of the mix being recognizable is where larry draws the line for liberal (which some of the judges disagree with mind you) mixes but really, if you're arranging music I don't see why you'd bother if you don't actually use the song in a meaningful way for half the damn song. It is kinda hard to explain what is too covery, the best way to figure it out is to find recent mixes that had a split vote on that issue but still passed and read their decisions, that usually gives some insight.
  3. They aren't as important in large ensembles but if you have a 4-part choir or something then yes, you should try and avoid them. This is assuming you want something that sounds like authentic western classical harmony (although even the great composers used them sometimes). Conversely, every rock guitar part ever written pretty much uses parallel fifths religiously. Depends on the style/sound you want. Parralel fifths tend to stand out as they reinforce one another, and because they aren't very interesting (as there isn't any tension created or released during that particular movement) that's generally something you want to avoid. As with many musical rules; purists will follow them religious, others will use them when it suits them, and some people just don't care and write what they like. You can't do anything "wrong" unless you have a set of rules or a style you want to conform to.
  4. In the uk they just say noh-kee-a, with no strong syllable:
  5. Well I was basically saying if it has to stay exactly as is, its just borderline yes; but if they were willing to fix it then that would be peachy. I.e. not quite a deal breaker for me but I would've suggested it if I hadn't read that they didn't want to change it. It does look a bit weird the way I wrote it, my bad. Do call me out on that if it looks dubious.
  6. OA told me how much he totally loved his track for the freshly baked bonanza. I believe the exact word was 'obnoxious'. So this is obviously pretty good. Vinnie is correct in saying minus the guitars it may as well be in the damn game as an evil version of the theme. My only real crit is stop using the AD compressor you lazy bum. YES but I wouldn't call him back
  7. I must agree with my good colleagues on this one. Having remixed this myself for the DKC2 project, this is almost like listening to the actual source to check I remembered it right. Nice enough to listen to and with a chilled groove but nothing really done to differentiate it from the original other then some timbre changes (pleasant though they are). NO
  8. This is a very creative arrangement with some nice time signature work. It's definitely prog'o'clock wherever you are. Mixing is a bit muddy, not hearing a huge amount of highs, but nothing too bad. The effects are bordering excessive in spots as noted, I think the delay on the leads is a bit overwhelming, especially from 3:15 onwards. The drop out was a bit weak, but the new theme is very nice, and I'd have a hard time thinking of a transition for that too. The ending too was a bit weak, but I think the rest of the arrangement is strong enough to overlook it. I think the arrangement is outweighing the negatives in the production for me. I still think that the effects are annoying but if they won't resubmit and they won't bend on it; I'm leaning just on the yes side. JUST Borderline
  9. ReMixer: Fishy ReMix name: Aire Tam Break (although feel free to suggest a better one, i suck at names, 200 internets if you know where thats from without googling) Game: FF7 Songs used: Fighting, Still more fighting, Anxious Hearts Comments: Structurally and stylistically this draws heavily from pendulum, in particular a song called Another Planet but more in the kinda rock crossover style that you find on In Silico. I started toying with addictive drums trying to make them sound as huge as possible and added this drop-in riff just to try it out, and suddenly I had a whole remix. I really had fun making this; I'm not usually particularly good with synth based stuff cause I'm usually too impatient to layer or automate modulation properly etc but I'm really proud of this. Note regarding the pendulum inspiration: I know the intro features similar ideas to another planet but I didn't take anything musically from it, just stylistically. Just wanted to make that clear in case anyone's concerned about it. Also, the "suddenly there was a change" sample followed by a triplet version of the riff is pretty much stolen (though I made the triplet version before I realized the sample would be funny there), but if that's not cool blame Andy, 'cause he told me to do it. ty for listening :3 edit: Just realised I'm way over 6mg, I'll sort it later.
  10. One more time in case you missed it Rama . I was on holiday during the week of subbing so I couldn't sub my (kinda finished) track: http://fishy.escariot.net/private/Lunar2.mp3 How can I get it on there?
  11. Neko; I get the feeling FFX is lost in translation. I think its a great game and the system is pretty cool, but the awkward scenes and voices ruin it a little bit. I think the game generally speaking gets better from where you said. I think you perhaps would've enjoyed IX instead of X though. IX is a lot more old shcool; brings back the theif/warrior/mage job archetypes in a more medieval setting; Nobuo says its his favourite ost; its got a good mix of light and dark moments too.
  12. EZ drummer is mostly pre-processed I think; meaning that they're already compressed? Can anyone with EZ confirm this? Addictive drums is good, try the demo first. Be warned though, its internal effects are pretty crap, use your own, especially the compressor.
  13. lol, I was half expecting that response, and you're right. I know ultimately you can do what you want cause there are no wrong answers, but most people don't want to just outright remove any semblance of dynamics from their music. If you do, then 30:1 all you like .
  14. Fair enough but I think its worth giving at least a wild guideline on whats excessive; Or noting that the values you're using are for maximum audiovisual effect for demonstration purposes and rarely used. Not doing so might make people think 30:1 is the typical value, which r crazy.
  15. Well glad you enjoyed it. Uh, not much to my setup really. Guitar > Tascam 144 > Guitar Rig I believe I used my Ibanez RG for the leads and my Jackson Dinky for the rhythm. The bass was also live using guitar rig too. If I was using my macbook I probably wouldn't have even used the tascam and gone straight into the side of it. Pretty low tech really.
  16. Jeez man, 30:1? A typical limiter is a compressor with a ratio of 20:1, not sure thats a great example ratio (although I suppose it does give something a bit more visual when you look at the waveform). Also an alright free compressor: http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php Some other goodies in there too.
  17. http://fishy.escariot.net/private/Lunar2.mp3 I already posted it but there it is again anyway. Not finished/polished (missing lead guitar tracks for a good 25 seconds in the middle) but its alright.
  18. Sorry dude, I've been away for about a week. I'll check it out when I get back to my nice speakers later today.
  19. YES I was gutted when vgdj shut down as soon as I found it, but woo!
  20. :/ I've been away for about a week, forgot about the deadline. My track wasn't finished but its as far as I can be bothered to do (don't like the source). What do I does to get my track on there rama?
  21. Yay, ocr radio! This is well put together, and I like the amount of guest clips. I think the only thing I miss from the old version was that had two hosts = whimsical banter. *Nice work guy here*
  22. Yeah its so much. The UV is far enough out of my price range to begin with. My housemate at uni has one. I have severe 7-envy .
  23. Well since you asked nicely justin. Actually that makes things looks much further along . I'll be after some wavs for those shortly.
