So Terranigma is one of my very favourite RPGs and one that I have played to DEATH. @Odai asked if I was interested and it took me all of two minutes to say "hell yes!" I'm going to attempt to do a chunky metal version of the Tower of Trial theme because I love those first few dungeons, they're super mysterious and don't give you any hints as to how big the world is about to get!2 points

I was invited to claim a track for this project and I would like to try for Crysta (Hometown 1, I think). I have no idea when I could begin or finish it, but I'm interested in trying all the same.1 point -

Day ruined. I was big into ELP from the time I was in 1st grade when I heard Brain Salad Surgery and they were the band that introduced me to making non traditional sounds via synths. Going to be running their albums not stop today.1 point -

***EARLY UPDATE*** I'm so enthused by the progress of this project that I'm updating it a whole two days early. I've also updated and given a facelift to the OP, to make it more readable and less waffly. Shiny shiny. You're probably going to get sick of my joviality by the time we're through First off, welcome to @Manji, @APZX, @Sterbo708 and @Ganaé who've signed up in the past few days. Welcome aboard peeps. Secondly, we now have almost half the tracks claimed at a total of 15. Now that's an album in itself, but we're not stopping there. This is to be an instalment that not only does a great game justice but paves the way fittingly for a whole series of albums dedicated to lost treasures. All signed up remixers should have their WIP deadlines in their diaries, if not, or if you need other info, then hit me up. It seems that most of the communication is going on behind the scenes in the PM's. That's largely my fault. My PM space quota has filled up by a quarter in the past week alone. So let's get the party out of the kitchen and crank up the volume in the games room! (That's right here in this thread for those who missed the poorly constructed analogy). Anyhoo... Glad to see this is progressing so well. Keep it up guys n gals, until next time... *Throws mic1 point -

OCR HAS RUINED MY MUSIC

There's definitely a negative influence it's had on writing songs with a lot of repetition. I've been writing music for a movie the past couple months, and the director is wanting a lot of repetitive and ambient tracks. However even with this I still run into problems with thinking "The chords need to change now to something completely different" or "If I don't put a new instrument in here it's going to get boring" Even though that's completely untrue. The real truth to everything is that you should be able to have diversity in your writing. Having an ability to be complex when you want and simple when you want is probably the biggest freedom to composing songs. Doing work on this film has taught me that you can make something beautiful and interesting with only 3 tracks. Or with repetitive rhythms and lines (I will say though that if you're writing repetitive music, having a melody that's complicated will get INCREDIBLY grating after a bit). The problem with repetition is when it's done on accident or out of laziness. Like a rock song probably needs to be developing a melody in a very obvious way, but a trip hop or ambient song can develop one slow and subtly. I guess it all comes down to the context of your track, if that makes any sense. And yeah, I agree that OCR doesn't hate repetition. I've heard a couple things from here that sound like they take influence from groups like Boards of Canada. If you listen to MHTRTC at first it seems like everything is just cut and pasted for 6 minutes a piece. But if you really listen to it you can hear that things are changing and developing, it's just happening very slowly. Like a different chord every once in awhile, or the drum sample being cut up and moved around just slightly. You shouldn't be confusing that for somebody who just copies and paste's a generic drum loop they made with some vengeance samples for 3 minutes and calls it a house song. EDIT: Also a couple of people on OCR have seriously helped me a lot with my mixing abilities. It's a great place to learn and develop and people really shouldn't be scared of posting mixes here.1 point -

^THIS^ Also, I learned how to make music here on this site. All my motivation and a lot of what I've learned and certainly all of my music friends and contacts came from here. Recommend 10/10, would OCR again.1 point -

I think that for many, variation = lack of repetition. The general public are very used to hearing songs with more repetition than OCR offers overall I've found. Many songs follow a verse/chorus format and often, other than lyrical content in the verses, much of it is cut and paste, with exception of instrumental performances (same parts, just recorded again). Sure there are exceptions but generally, I find OCRs standards require a bit more effort to keep things interesting. Plus, because we're dealing with (mostly) instrumentals, track structures can tend to be a bit more open. Thats just my take on it.1 point -

Starting an Anime Club for Teens - Suggestions?
Eino Keskitalo reacted to The Damned for a topic
Some advice. First and foremost, I am not some Tumblr/SJW/prudish cliche. I am also not the polar opposite (not sure what to call that? Shitlord?). What I am is someone that has watched anime since the mid 1980. And no, I don't mean Robotech. We had access to Japanese Macross. Lots of stuff from various sources over the years. That guy down the street how had fifth generation bootleg tapes from his cousin in Japan, some video stores with a very limited selection, right up to the 90s and 2000s with local anime conventions and dedicated stores. And now we have stuff like Crunchyroll, Netflix and all those torrents and streaming sites. My god, you kids have it so easy now. Seriously, you can not comprehend how different things were twenty years ago, let along thirty or more. Fuck yeah, future! Any way, you're aiming at teens, aged 12 to 16. OK, cool. Lots of people got into anime about that age. Anime can be funny, even mind-blowing, at that age. Like, "holy shit, that was a crazy story!" Or, "holy shit, did you see that fight scene? It went on for twenty minutes!" Good times can, and will, be had. Open up interests in other countries and cultures, history, art and music, all kinds of stuff. Buuuuut... there is something that this vast access to anime has brought with it. A lot of anime simply isn't appropriate for teens. And I don't mean "time to show a little skin!" inappropriate. I mean stuff ranging from under-age sexualization (seems to be popular these last few... decades) to straight-up sexual assault. Case in point: Nanatsu No Taizai. Early in the series, the male lead character brings the unconscious lead female character to a safe place after a minor battle. Once in bed, he looks over, places his hand on her breasts, gives them a big ol' squeezin', and when she wakes up, says he was just checking her pulse. No. No, that is not right. You pull that shit in real life, you get arrested. But in anime, it's OK because... ANIME!! It's fine in Japan! (No it isn't, it's a crime and the penalty is quite severe. Like the police. Seriously, don't get arrested in Japan). So not all shows, regardless of suggestions or recommendations, are going to appropriate for 12 to 16 year old kids. Watch the shows. Not one or two episodes, watch at least five of them (if not more) to make sure. Think about what kind of scenarios these kids are going to be watching over the weeks or months, and what kind of impressions and messages these shows are going to make. And for the love of Arceus, legally cover you ass. Make sure everything you do is on the up-and-up. Work with the staff to make sure there are no laws or regulations in your town/state/province/territory/etc about shows and ratings. None of us want to hear about some guy in a small town library getting arrested for accidentally showing "that there Jap cartoon porn" to some 12 year-olds, even when we all know that is not the case. Once you clear those two concerns, go for it. Invite the parents to watch with their kids, maybe get a small article in the local paper or something to get more members (and also solidify your good standing in the community), have a small local convention if there aren't any in your region. There are so many ways this could turn out good, and most of them you won't even have to work hard at. Small clubs can be a wellspring of friendships and good memories that will be around for years after the club could fold up. It's worth the time and effort, even if it's only in a small town library. Good luck!1 point -
OCR03318 - *YES* Kirby Air Ride 'Frozen Fantasie'
timaeus222 reacted to Emunator for a topic
This is exquisite! I think the artist's submission comments say it all - the source tune adapts perfectly to a classical style. The arrangement is pretty straightforward, without a lot of original writing or frills, but the performance is incredibly emotive, and introduces an even more dramatic and satisfying dynamic curve than the original. The number of solo piano submissions we receive seems to have dwindled lately, so it's especially gratifying to hear something this well-done that touches on a source from a very under-appreciated game. Bravo! I'm not listening on my normal setup at the moment, so if someone else could check the volume levels and see how that sounds, that'd be awesome. From an arrangement perspective, I think this is firing on all cylinders. YES1 point
