  1. Older Version: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/t3gokd2swuyfd1i/The Beautiful Wilderness.mp3?dl=0 Original: ____ When you exit the Earth Cave, ("Frozen Depths of the Earth" is what the song is called in my personal copy of the 7th Saga ost,) the above music begins playing, and although the world of Ticonderoga is mostly brown, I can't help but think that it must look really beautiful, in a Mediterranean sort of way. Especially after being stuck in a cave. Anyways, any criticism is welcome for this.

  3. Larry, you're an out of touch old man, but that's beside the point. Overall, the track doesn't seem to have very much focus. It follows the source, sure, but since the general dynamic and texture is very similar throughout there's really no build up, climax, etc., that gives the listener any sense of direction. It's just all... the same-ish. I'll acknowledge 2:20 as really dropping down and changing it up, but it's not enough to mitigate the overall lack of diversity throughout the track. The drum pattern really drives this issue home, though - it's pretty close to four-to-the-floor throughout the entire song, but instead of driving the track forward (like that style often does), the slow pacing of this makes it sound plodding and uninteresting. While the production is clean, at 1:36 the theme is held in a light, quiet pad, while everything else is mixed closer to the front, making that part sound odd. The background arpeggio at the moments mentioned by Chimp indeed have notes that are sour. At 0:58, 1:21 and 1:36 the arpeggio part in the background plays notes that directly conflict with the chord being outlined by the melody and pads. Those notes need to be corrected. Overall, the mix feels like it's lacking both in the low end and high end of the EQ spectrum, which gives the entire track a dull, suppressed feel. For the most part, it's simply that the instruments used primarily take up the midrange, so the far ends of the spectrum is just missing from the arrangement, altogether. Yeah, I'm with Chimp and Larry on this, it does feel like a lot of things are off. Hopefully some of the things we're saying here is helpful, though. NO

  5. I'm featured on that site, a remix of the Gummi Bears theme I did 12 years ago under the name Nareen: http://www.animeremix.org/remix/46/ Let's see if I can think of a nice source for this compo. Maybe I'll make a new Gummi Bears remix.

  6. Just built my monster rig a few months ago. If there's any advice I could give it would be to make getting a Fractal Design Case like the R5 a priority. It makes building the pc a breeze, cable management is practically taken care of for you and the thing runs so silently that the hum of the fridge from 2 rooms over drowns out the fan noise. To avoid problems I use 2 harddrives with a seperate OS on each. i keep my music SSD offline except to update a few programs here or there and use a 2TB HDD for my online endeavors and gaming. Definitely get latencymon to see if anything burdens your CPU and don't install everything that comes with your motherboard. I made that mistake and had to waste time uninstalling a bunch of stuff to decrease the load on the CPU. If you haven't yet definitely watch this video too. It'll give you a picture of what you need to streamline things for yourself.

  7. I think, like Skrypnyk said, there's always someone out there who can do everything. So might as well learn both. I don't think it matters which you focus on first. I learned production at the same time I learned composition, I'm still learning both, and I will until the day I drop dead probably. And I also mix my music as I compose, rather than mix at the end, which I now know is not the way everyone works, but some do. Come to think of it, I don't really think about production much anymore. I used to agonize over EQ, compression, reverb, etc. Now I don't EQ at all unless there's a harsh high frequency or muddy bass frequency. I completely stopped compressing and now I just focus on the dynamics as I perform. I add a touch of simple reverb and that's it. I don't know if it's because I got so used to production that it's second-nature, or I just don't give a fuck anymore, lol.

  8. Again, depends on what you're trying to do. If you're an garage band then production isn't that big of a factor, if you're trying to be a trap producer then composition isn't that important. I think that many directors want young people to be master of these trades because it'd be cheaper or easier to hire someone who knows everything rather than someone who excels in one field but needs training in the other. There's also at least one person out there who knows everything and times better spent finding them rather than taking on someone who's lacking? I don't know if I could go back in time would I have done anything differently. I'm kinda where I personally want to be. Not looking into getting that AAA job or film composer position, but doing my own thing on my own terms

  10. Alright, we have a winner: Esperado, pm me for the next round. 57 I believe. I think Elementary Starbage is actually really good. Lots of cool percussion, a kick ass pad/choir background and nifty effects. It does end abruptly, but that's a moot point really. The guitar is a nice addition too. It's a shame there wasn't more participants as both sources were pretty solid. I've been in a slump the past 2 weeks so I couldn't get off my ass to be productive, alas.
