  1. Hey guys, it's been a while, but I've been busy. I've put together a 35 minute EP of Sonic The Hedgehog remixes from the 8 and 16 bit eras of Sonic called Zoned. The musical style is a blend of Electro-Funk and Retrowave with sprinklings of Chiptune. Included tracks from both 8 and 16 bit versions of Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Sonic Chaos. Also interweaved into this album are soundbites from the games themselves, excerpts from 90s SEGA TV commercials, and dialogue from various video game documentaries that discuss both the significance of SEGA and Sonic The Hedgehog in the history and develop of video games and video game music. Tracks remixed are: Turquoise Hill Zone (Sonic 2 - 8 bit) Sky High Zone (Sonic Chaos) Star Light Zone (Sonic 1) Hydrocity Zone (Sonic 3) Bridge Zone (Sonic 1 - 8 Bit) Spring Yard Zone (Sonic 1) Underground Zone (Sonic 2 - 8 bit) Casino Night Zone - 2 Player (Sonic 2) Chemical Plant Zone (Sonic 2) It was released in conjunction with RadioSEGA and premiered on Sunday night as part of their Winterfest. If you didn't listen to the show and/or haven't yet grabbed a download, please help yourself. https://opussciencecollective.bandcamp.com/album/zoned Have a lovely Christmas and keep gaming, fellow remixers . 4. Hello! As you may or may not know, MAGFest is happening soon, and just like every year for the past decade, we'll be having a special month over at Dwelling of Duels, with a live listening party at MAGFest! Exact details about the listening party to follow. The tradition is to pick a unique and interesting theme for the MAGFest duel, and this time it's... 80s vs 90s Month That's right, we're pitting two awesome decades against each other! Which had the better video games? Which had the better music? Which had the better video game music? All of these questions will be answered this month. Artists can chose either the 80s or the 90s, and remix songs from a game (or multiple games) released in that decade. Featuring games from both decades in a single entry is not allowed. Other than that, all standard rules apply: http://dwellingofduels.net/rules/ Now, what makes this duel special, other than the live listening party, you ask? Well, we're happy to announce a partnership with Impact Soundworks! Top 3 artists (or groups/bands) will each get one library out of the following: Super Audio Cart, Shreddage Bass 2, Shreddage Guitar or Shreddage Drums. Fun fact: Shreddage Bass 2 was recorded by the ocremix artist, bass virtuoso and the person with the most DoD gold medals, Tony Dickinson a.k.a. Prince uf Darkness! But wait, there's more: entrants will be able to get a 10% discount on all Impact Soundworks libraries! So, get your instruments ready, start making some music, and enter the duel! Deadline for submissions is January 3rd, 2017 at 1PM EST. Send your entries to dodsongs@gmail.com. If you come to MAGFest, be sure to drop by the listening party (80s or 90s fashion not required). We promise it's gonna be fun, as you can see in this video: For those not familiar with DoD: Dwelling of Duels is a monthly (or sometimes bi-monthly) video game music remixing competition started back in 2003. The focus is on live instruments: each entry needs to have a main instrument played live. A theme is picked for each duel and all the entries have to follow the theme. At the end of the month, listeners vote for the songs and a winner is decided. To this day, there have been: - 2778 entries, from - 1070 games, by - 714 artists, in - 154 duels, having - 167+ hours of music! http://dwellingofduels.net/

  7. Im not sure though, since both rounds are live you could be mixing for both rounds at once. Even if the mnp starts before the prc, youd still be doing the majority of the mixing during the appropriate time period. Dunno if ill risk it, but Itd be cool to have such a long mixing period.

  10. Happy birthday, Tim Follin, you amazing sexy beast, you! Listening to the source, then listening to this, it just seems like a perfect fit for an arrangement. Strange, spacy and innovative, I think it mirrors the important aspects of the source while transforming it into something unique. Really liking the pseudo-fusion Jazz style this track is rockin'.

  11. Yooka-Laylee is confirmed for Switch though, they're working really closely to make sure it still hits a Nintendo console. I'm looking forward to Zelda as well, and KH2.8 is gonna be fun (replaying KH3D with new Dream Eaters is gonna be great). Also I'm still expecting KH3 to drop next December. So there's that.

  13. I PMed you a full review. I like! ___ Alright, everyone - hard to believe how time has flown, but here we are: check-in time! So, as the first check in, all we require is a current WIP and acknowledgement that everyone is still on board. Now, I have 20 WIPs out of the 27 claims we have for the album; for those of you who have submitted a WIP already, you are in the clear so just post something here and you'll be fine. For the remaining 7 claims with no WIP, we would like to have something from you in the next two weeks - I'm starting the check in now to give you time to do so. Folks I'm missing WIPs from: @The Nikanoru - Titania (what a jerk) Prominion - Fortuna @Starphoenix - Boss B (you've sent me a sample, so I know you have a WIP you can send me!) @M_Blacki - Sector Y @Ronald Poe - Space Armada @Trev - Bolse @Siolfor the Jackal - Sector Z We ARE still early in the project, so I'm not going for the hatchet right away. If you need a bit more time to finish up a WIP, please PM me and we'll see what we can do. That being said, if we do not hear from you, you'll have two weeks from the check in date to get back to me and/or DS394 or you will be cut from the project. @DS394, @DaMonz, and I are going through all the tracks in the next two weeks or so to make sure all the current WIPs have comprehensive reviews from each of us. A couple of remixers are sending me updated WIPs almost daily; we're all pretty busy these days and I don't want to overload the other directors, so please, if you're going to send us an updated version to review, send us one more update before this time next week and we'll review that. No scary stuff, guys. I am very happy with how all this is turning out; we have a great group of remixers here and I'm especially pleased with all the collaborative work going on here. Kudos to @Pichu's Dad and @M_Blacki for their help the last few weeks; @Jorito is also still available for audio support as well, even though he is now directing the Secret of Mana project - just be patient with him, he's busy! Some other stuff: I'm getting my artist guy to start working on a promotional poster and the album cover art this next quarter. I'm going to try to stay in a space-y theme for the cover art, staying with the Lylat motif of the album itself; however, I've also asked @Etzaen to do some art for the 4 main characters, as we need some representation of the pilots as well as the ships. If anyone wants to submit other art, let me know and we'll see what we can do. I plan to submit this project for OCR approval within the next four months. I have set a goal for the project of 16 complete (not finished) tracks to submit with. I currently have 4 tracks I have labelled complete; if anyone is wondering what I mean by that, a complete track 'is a track with a full framework; one that has a beginning, a middle, and an end that are clearly defined.' This does not mean the structure is set in stone; that would be a finished track, which should only require minor mixing adjustments. There is another goal to get the project to 32 claims. We need 5 more claims to reach this goal; let us know if you want in or know someone who does! And with that.. ALL SHIPS CHECK IN!

Gave it the thumbs up. Reminded me of playing Uncharted Waters on the NES or SNES. The maps are cool, turn-based hex combat looks fun, and liked the music.

  16. I would strongly urge (smack if need be) him to reconsider. A USB audio interface is far cheaper and smarter than replacing a whole computer that still works. How exactly was he recording beforehand? This may explain the fried soundcard...? Anyway, if he does get a new laptop (desktop is still lightyears better), any stock PC dual/quadcore laptop with around 8 gigs of RAM is more than enough for rock/metal production as the most taxing plugins usually used are drum VSTis, amp sims and time-based effects. Like, I just went to Best Buy's site and right on the homepage, they have a $499 laptop that meets exactly those specifications...

  18. Actually, a perfectly fair question; it's difficult to put into few words. Fortunately, someone actually asked me the exact same question yesterday (because of my comment here, no less!), so I'll share what I explained with him (with a few edits, for clarity): "Plain, unimaginative and/or boring sound design" is what vanilla generally means. There's some subjectivity to it, of course, but it does have some objective base to it. It's helpful to think of it using a basic litmus test: A. Is it an easily recognized, overused preset (like Supersaw) or a pure waveform (saw, square, etc.)? If so... B. Is there a particular reason for it, like trying to emulate a particular sound (squares to emulate NES) or style (Supersaws for old school electronic music)? If not... C. Is there anything in the texture that makes them otherwise interesting (Quick arps, gating, etc) that might be muddy or messy with more complex instruments, or against itself? If the answer to the first is 'YES' and the other two is 'NO', doing something with the sound design of the simpler instruments will objectively make your music sound more rich and complete, without losing something in the arrangement in return. Do know, though, that this does NOT mean use a different sampler/synthesizer/etc.; it means do something with your tools (envelops, layering, etc.) that makes the instruments more interesting. Consider two of the three points in that litmus test in some detail: if you're actually going for a particular sound, then that not only justifies the use of simpler sounds, it may even require them ("8-bit" and "Fake-bit" is a genre that requires square waves for that sound, for example). Also, sometimes the use of pure sounds is necessary in order to apply more complex textures: doing hyper-fast 64th or 128th note arpeggios with virtually anything other than basic square or sines WILL sound like trash with more complex instruments. One final point that sums all of this nicely: Above all else, make your choices sound intentional rather than incidental. If it sounds like the composer made a purposeful choice on the sound design/synth/instrument rather than chose an instrument/synth just to carry the notes, it'll probably sound correct.
