  1. Because ThaSauce changed everything from 2016 to 2018 voting stage was ended before the remixing stage was ended. I wasn't able to edit it correctly since it resetted the start date from this contest to 2018 as well, as a result it looks like the contest started at January 1st 2017 now. I don't know if anyone had issues to upload the song as a result of this. For this reason (and to give myself more time to do the administration of this and the next round) I set the deadline to tomorrow instead of today. Voting will be longer as usual (ending January 9th). PRC339 starts when this round ends. Voting can be done @ThaSauce or by sending me a PM. Details follow later. I was able to download the songs by Dewey Newt and MrHassanSan so they are in for this round as well. EDIT: Added them both to ThaSauce as well.

  2. Free round, with no extra accounts needed. Guess it's time for me to stop lurking the forums and throw an entry in. I was working on a SNES TMNT IV style cover of Spark Mandrill when the contest started, so that will be my entry: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8-q7hg2GtQPcnFDRFlTMTlvakU Interesting side note: TMNT IV only used 6 of the 8 SNES channels for music. I stuck to that rule, which was a little difficult to implement on this song since MMX used all 8. Maybe this type of cover is not the best to enter contests with, but eh, I'm entering anyways!

  5. Just a quick tip, a 5/4 measure sneaks in at the fourth measure/there's an extra beat added to bar 4, which isn't reflected in the MIDI. And as dizzying as it sounds, I think everything else stays in 4/4. I have to give credit where it's due: my wife picked this source track. She really wanted something from Twilight Princess, so I gave her a list of what I should pick, and she said this one.

  6. Hi everyone! This is my first time doing an actual remix. I haven't officially released it yet, and I think I'm going to try submitting to the site proper as well. Entry: The Sword of Storms Sources: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: "Ocarina: Song of Storms" / Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: "Ballad of the Goddess" Let me know if there's an issue downloading!

  8. Compo: MnP (Meat 'n Potatoes) Round 66: (LoZ) Twilight Princess - Beast Ganon Battle Midi: http://compo.thasauce.net/files/materials/MnP66_6-22_ganonseq.mid Youtube: Deadline: Jan 15th Monday @ 1 PM Vote Ends: Jan 17th Wed @ 11 PM MnP ARCHIVE - made by Trism Submit your remix Here when completed. **If you have technical difficulty with account activation at ThaSauce, please contact me via PM and I will submit your track and will also tally your vote** MISSION STATEMENT The goal of Compo:MnP is to promote that "meat and potatoes" conservative approach to remixing: this includes the mood and composition of source tunes. It is up to the remixer to create their own personalization, or to simply give it a sound upgrade. Moreover, the compo is a great opportunity to hone your remixing skills and give video game music the respect that is due. SOME reinterpretation is recommended, but not required. MnP Instructions/Guidelines 1. Covers and Sound Upgrades are permitted. 2. Most or all of the source notes must be present (but not necessarily in the exact same order), secondly the mood (energy, pacing, feelings being conveyed etc) should also be retained. For example, a source tune that is fast-paced and energetic that's remixed into a mellow/chill-out theme would be a hard sell. 3. If you decide to do a genre swap (i.e. symphonic to techno), make sure that the conditions of #2 are met. 4. Submissions must be at a maximum of 20mb (keeping in step with ThaSauce's file size max). 5. Only 1 entry per participant. Previous winner cannot participate but can submit a BONUS entry. 6. All competitors and voters must adhere to the rules stated within: Competition Code and Conduct MISC/TIPS - When picking a source tune, make sure it has a MIDI to make ppl's lives easier. - In-game sound FX are permitted, so long as they don't comprise the whole track (i.e. replacing entire MIDI tracks with just sfx)

  9. As far as I'm aware, most of the instruments you hear in the Donkey Kong series are derived from KORG M1 soundbanks (either that or Wavestation). There is actually a VST-version of the synth KORG offers as part of their KORG Legacy Collection. With some instrument layering and modulation you could probably come up with near identical sounds. As for contacting David Wise... He is on Twitter, but whether he responds or not I could not tell you.

  11. I'd say it's the best game in the series since Gen 3 (and I love Gen 3). Each generation shakes things up a little, here and there. Like, gen 2 added two new types and held items, gen 3 added abilities and a better, more streamlined stat system, etc. But Sun and Moon had the biggest changes. Most of them were minors things on paper, but they change the game a lot in practice. Gone are HMs, replaced by pokémon you can summon instantly to perform the task the old HM would have done. This frees up a lot of move slots on multiple pokémon, so you can now carry a full team of battlers without having to sacrifice anything at all. Gyms are gone, and I'm kind of glad they did it this way. Replacing it with something other than more battles gives a good change of pace. Instead of fighting a Gym Leader that uses Fire or Rock or whatever type pokémon, you are given a task by a local trainer of importance, like gather certain items in a jungle, or take pictures of a rare pokémon. You still get to fight them at some point, but the short break from grinding and fighting is a nice change. Also, they removed the stiffer grid-based system, and replaced it with a true analog direction system instead. You can walk in any direction, take curved paths, start and stop easier... The Ultra Beasts quest post-game isn't too deep, but it give you a nice quest after the main game. You get to meet an old character or two from older games, the Ultra Beasts are kind of cool... Totem Pokémon battles are a good spike in difficulty. They're bigger and tougher than regular pokémon of the same kind, and they tend to have a single stat boost right at the start of battle that give you a good fight. I remember fighting a few and actually having a hard time with them. Wild pokémon can call other pokémon during battle to help them out. Suddenly, it's two on one, and they can get pretty sneaky. I almost lost to a double battle against some poison types. One would poison my team, the other would use a move that double damage when the target is poisoned, so even though I had a huge level advantage, I was getting my ass kicked! There are a few things that I wish had been kept. They could have cut the number of Ride Pokémon in half, and given more uses for the RotomDex (like making it your Item Finder instead of using Stoutland to sniff item out). But overall, it's a really good refresh on the series. I miss the Bicycle. The fastest Ride Pokémon requires constant holding down of the B button, and it's not exactly as fun. Smashing through rocks gets tiring after the hundredth time, and there's that slight delay when you have to change outfits and summon the pokémon to you. The same amount of time could just have you take a bicycle out from behind you and bam, no need for a silly helmet and bodysuit. But overall, it's definitely a big step up from gen 6. All the good stuff from before is kept, all the clunky bits are smoothed out, and all the new stuff is a nice change.

Alright, I promised an announcement, so here it is! I will make an announcement tomorrow! Apologies, but I ended up out of town, so I wasn't able to really make this announcement today. However, I will be at home tomorrow, so I'll lay it all down then. See you tomorrow!

  14. Yeah, I know, this has been done before, but now i'm doing it so THERE. I've been wanting to listen to an artists full collective works on ocr for a while to document their growth, also so I can analyse their style and hopefully use that info to improve my own I'm going to be picking artists from random but depending on the length of their collective works, it might take me longer than others to finish my full review. In many cases I may split my reviews into multiple parts. Any feedback anyone has on how I decide to approach this is welcome, I am open to any suggestions to make things a little easier in terms of reading. Without further ado, LETS DO THE THING! 16. As far as the arrangement goes, it sounds like a lot of love went into this. Guitar, synths, fast paced drums, and even some wubs - all it needs is a kitchen sink and it's good to go! It's a very tasty blend of instruments, and I got a real kick out of it. The guitar playing was pretty good and the synths were pretty clear. The wubs were not quite as powerful as I would've liked - if you're going to add wubs, go big or go home. It just didn't go big enough, so they sound out of place. as a result. There are moments in the track where the bass falls behind in the mix (such as at 0:44 - 1:10). It makes the track sound like there's no bottom, at times. It's not a severe problem, but it would've been better had the bass been balanced a little better with the rest of the track. The arrangement was pretty sweet, personal grudge against the source aside (fun fact - I didn't enjoy the source). I enjoyed your arrangement much more than where you derived it from - it was making me dance a little in my chair. Little mixing issues and weak wubs aside, you did a great job on it. YES

  18. Jorito contacted me about offering a new version of this song, without prompt. Here's the new version he has provided: (removed) and he requested to use this one instead. I've listened to both submissions and this second version is slightly less boomy, though a bit less warm too. Elements are clearer, like the guitars, but the wubs are a bit subby in this version. In any case, @DragonAvenger and @Chimpazilla should give it a quick look to see if it's still ok for them. Anyways, As mentioned previously the low frequency balance is a bit off as it can get busy at times, but not so much to bring the mix down. I think the mix of different elements like the hard bass wubs and guitars worked very well, something I find it's not that easy to pull off. Sound design was interesting throughout, even though the mix could've been cleaner. The arrangement is where this song shines, as usual from Jorito, we get a very fun and creative arrangement that takes the original to new places. A very high-energy track that flows well and has some imaginative writing. Jorito hasn't been around for long, but I'm looking forward to hearing what he'll be able to do in the future when he manages to get his production on point, as I'm pleased with his progress with each new song. 19. Pretty much in full agreement with Kris here; there's a lot to like here, and while there are some issues with the production, they don't really add up to bring a deal breaker here. I do think the track could stand to be a bit more full overall, but the arrangement is pretty fun. The ending works really nice add well, as an extra nor to add YES

  20. Ooooo this sounds nice right away. The toploop could be louder, all the drums could be louder and more present. The wubs could also be louder, you can definitely make them fill more space without needing to rely on the vocal sample, although the vocal is fine but a little repetitive. I hear no sidechaining which would make the mix groove better. The breakdown is pretty simple and empty, with not a lot of excitement to build back up to 3:10 which sounds too loud by contrast. The rhythm guitar sample sounds pretty good after the breakdown. I like the leads you've used. Source use seems to be plenty with great personalization. There are definitely aspects of the mixing that could be improved, but I think the positives outweigh the issues and I'm going with this one. YES
