  2. I agree this probably doesn't belong here by intent, but I'll try to give it a bit of a scholarly twist. Bear with me, Bardic! Making something go with Guile's theme has little to do with genre. In fact, it more often than not has little to do with connecting to other music, if I'm recalling the meme correctly - it has to do with rhythm of an image syncing up with the beat pattern of the music. At a BPM of 120 (which is the standard march tempo - likely why Guile's theme uses it), this means that as long as video has something happening at a rate of precisely twice a second, it will "line up" with the beats of the music (120 beats per minute = 2 beats per second = 1 beat every half second). Since this lines up well with how we sync time, this beat rate lines up perfectly with many things - from the frequency of fire alarm strobes (the standard duty cycle is either one or two flashes a second) to march patterns (all set to 120 bpm), Guile's theme will seemingly resonate with more things than it should. A study of the theme and how to precisely line it up with any other song (regardless of genre) would also be interesting, but it's not something that I'll do at work. Maybe I'll give a melodic and harmonic breakdown some other time and show what music would (theoretically) work with Guile's theme, and what music wouldn't.

  3. Sorry... I have to do this: The "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" ones were pretty clever too and definitely made sense regarding how the story was told to us (no videos for these ones... sorry T.T).

    OCRJ-2017 - & Knuckles

Preview it: http://youtu.be/_fUnmQB2yU4 Download & Knuckles: http://soundcloud.com/ocremix/sets/and-knuckles I'm very proud to announce the release of the newest OCR album: & Knuckles! Knuckles has long been an unsung hero among gamers, and I'm happy to bring him to the forefront for a sonic tour through some of the best songs of the franchise. The original idea for this album was devised only three months ago, but a large number of artists stepped up to the plate to help make this happen even over such a short time. I truly hope you enjoy their outstanding work here. Get ready to not chuckle, and to start flexing your muscles! - Jarel Jones (Arrow) This was my first time doing the cover art for an OC ReMix album and I had a ton of fun! While I'm more into Mega Man these days, Sonic was my first fandom, so it was awesome to revisit and draw it again. Also, c'mon, let's face it, swole Knuckles is awesome. It was an honor to work on this album and I hope you enjoy the art as well as all the crazy awesome music inside. - Tabby Ramsey

  5. EDIT: Please don't say "Move somewhere else." I can't do that for another year at the earliest. I live in a small town outside of Amarillo, Texas called Canyon. For reference, Amarillo has about 200,000 people, canyon has about 30,000, so it's not that big compared to say Houston, LA, New York or any other large city like that, but it is big enough to have 4 high schools, a professional symphony orchestra and choir, a 4-year state university, and other things like that. However, the music scene is also the size you would expect from a city this size. Due to being in Texas, country, Tejano, and pop music are king, meaning that even if the quality isn't that good, people will eat it up just because it's the music they are used to hearing. There is a slightly smaller rock scene, which is still very popular, but jazz, which is my area of performance is very small. Because of this, there are a few small jazz ensembles that play around the area for private parties and bars, I'm in one of them, and the other is pretty well established in the area. I am thinking of leaving the group I'm in, but am hesitant. This group is virtually the only performance opportunity I get currently. The gigs I get with this group are nice and can pay one or two bills, but I am worried about staying with this group. For one, the leader is, let's say in a different place than he used to be, and has a history that has yet to follow him here, and if it does follow him I'm worried that the association will kill my professional reputation. For another, the group is very disorganized. The biggest part is that we aren't a specific type of band. In one 4 hour gig, we will play some Frank Sinatra, some 1950s Jamaican pop music, some American pop music from the 2010s and later, some 1940s swing, some Beatles, etc. The problem with this is that although we are a jazz instrumentation (piano, bass, guitar, drums, 4 wind instruments, and a singer), we play all these different styles on the same set, and most of it doesn't work because we aren't a rock band playing music in rock style, or a world music band playing music from around the world, we're a jazz band modeled after the swing bands of the 1940s trying to play all those styles in their original forms with no arrangement (basically trying to take these genres and literally shove them into a shape that they don't fit). We don't generally have rehearsals, just show up at the gigs and play, using chord sheets which just have the chords of the music. No words, no melody, no nothing. Which, despite the fact that the 2 "leader" wind players (myself and a saxophone) are adept jazz musicians and the other two are less experienced (one is a community college student and the other is a Mariachi player who can somewhat do jazz), it ends up that we have 4 people just noodling and playing random stuff that sounds too busy. Any attempts at using written out arrangements have failed due to the singer changing them enough that they can't be used anymore during performance, so most of the time it's like...okay we know what key we're in, but other than that it's a complete wildcard what will actually happen in performance. This has led to many performances that to somebody who knows anything about music sound horrible and are an embarrassment, but since we play to crowds of people who literally don't know anything about music, they're like..."wow this sounds amazing." Ex members of this band, including one of the founding members actually can't get hired on their own at the venues we've played in because of the reputation they've gotten from the group, which is bad because for some of them, music is one of their main sources of income and their market is shrinking. I have tried to start my own group, doing a more specialized kind of thing, where we do something like Postmodern Jukebox, but I can't get good musicians without paying them, and I can't get hired to play anywhere because the places have never heard the band perform, and because of that it's a cycle that is really hard to break. As I am now I can't afford to pay them without a place hiring the group and paying the group, which is how a lot of things work around here to begin with. For the most part, people think they want jazz, but then when actual jazz is playing, they ignore it or are annoyed by it (which is a consistent thing with the band I'm in now), but when we do pop stuff from today, even if it sounds bad, suddenly people are like..."wow this band is really good and I want to dance to this." Which is great. They like that kind of music. I am not the kind of musician that does that. I'm not a guitar player, and don't have time to learn guitar well enough to produce a quality performance on it due to going to school and having a job full time. I also feel like I'm not being pushed at all. I'm not getting any kind of challenge, nor do I have to think to play these gigs. There's very little musical reward because the performances aren't good, there is no arrangement value, and most of the time I can literally play whatever I want and nobody will notice. The OCRemix community is about as big as the town of Canyon where I currently live. What do you think I should do? Should I leave the group and try to form my own group again, basically biding my time until I move away from this area in a year? Or should I just power through it and just deal with any reputation problems that come from association with the group leader and name? I'm a little hesitant because although the performance experience is not rewarding, challenging, or otherwise worth it at all, I'm scared to go a whole year without any performance opportunities. Thank you for reading this.

  8. A musician once told me that 'the only problem I have with working with other musicians is working with other musicians.' From my own experience, I have found that like dating, finding musicians of like mind and drive is like looking for a soul mate - it's not something that you can just go out and get, it just sort of happens, usually due to opportunity and circumstance. Being in a smaller town certainly doesn't help either; less musicians means less opportunity to meet new musicians. That being said, if you are determined to make this happen in the live scene in this town, then you're probably going to have to put up with some of the ... shall we say idiosyncrasies of other musicians in your area. IMO, starting your own band/group sounds like the way to go, but would you consider being a little less specific with your genre? This is probably why your other band was all over the place musically; everyone wanting to play different things leading to chaos on the set list and no one motivated to fix mistakes on songs they don't care about. As leader, at least you control the message of the band overall; you may find yourself playing boring, easy stuff for some of your mates, but you might find more people willing to 'play ball' that way. Plus, if you are playing to the audience, then it has to be music the audience wants to hear. If they don't like what they are hearing, start looking for what they ARE listening to - perhaps you can find some sort of compromise. You also strike me as someone who takes their musical skill and performance very seriously. In my experience in the local scene, most musicians go on stage to have fun, not improve performance; that's what practice is for. If you aren't feeling challenged by what's on the sheet music, why not focus on your improv/soloing skill? Or perhaps some more elaboration on the fills? I've had some of the most fun ever on stage just jamming to some random four-chord progression and everyone getting a turn noodling over top of it. Amazing some of the music that comes from it too! Or, you could try writing some of your own music, or changing your parts a bit to give you a bit more of a challenge or... Long and short (TL;DR version): If you're gonna stay in the town, you gotta work with what you got. OCR has taught me to embrace the diversity of musicians, no matter where they are at - maybe the folks in your area are just looking for the right pitch (also no pun intended). I hope this has helped in some way. Good luck, @JohnStacy - if all else fails, there's always collabs on OCR!

  9. Wanted to chime in and say that this is a great analysis. That it doesn't contain specific jargon I could care less about -- I'm motivated to track down the relevant stages and listen for myself after reading since I missed out on Super Monkey Ball. From this, I'm reminded a little of the final stage of Katamari Damacy in which the music is particularly less upbeat compared to the euphoric whimsy (visually and aurally) on display in the opening stages.

  12. And I don't even think the Sonic soundtracks make particularly effective use of the hardware, even if they sound good as they are. Last week I did a cover of Spring Yard precisely for this reason My videos showcase each individual channel so you can kind of see what's going on. But I also made the Deflemask project public so you can download Deflemask and open it there to take a closer look at what I did differently from the original. http://www.deflemask.com/forum/show-off-your-work/sonic-1-spring-yard-zone-(genesis)/

  15. I have music knowledge! So I guess I have to talk about one of my fave Sega soundtracks now... um... Oh! Jet Set Radio! I actually have the OSTs to both JSR games on my iPhone... and wish to have the entire works of Hideki Naganuma on there one day... so I guess I have no other choice. So... 1. Why does it fit? Well, first off, the "protagonists" are gangs who listen to a pirate radio station. A pirate radio station usually plays music that isn't considered "mainstream". Back in the early 00s (when JSR came out) that was big beat and indie rock. So what does Naganuma do? He puts his own spin on the Fatboy Slim ethos, brings in little-known band Guitar Vader, and even brings in Rob Zombie for the US soundtrack. This goes even further in JSRF, where the soundtrack has artists like Cibo Matto and Scapegoat Wax that no one has even heard of. 2. What does it accomplish? Let's take a look at the title screen of JSR for an example. You boot up the game and you're greeted with the game's logo (as well as Professor K shouting it out) and a Rudie is skating around Shibuya Terminal. But most important of all, Hideki Naganuma's funky-as-hell "Let Mom Sleep" is blaring in the background. This music makes a statement, and that statement is Hey! You're playing something fresh and funky, yo, and you're about to have a BLAST! Elsewhere, let's say Final Groove, "Grace and Glory" fits the creepy, demonic atmosphere that the so-called Devil's Contract is supposed be infused with, and in the Kogane residential area mission where "'Bout the City" is playing, it creates a feeling of rocking out and tearing up the establishment - which the Rudies are definitely all about. In JSRF, "Funky Dealer" is the song that kicks off your graffiti streak, and there's only one thing this song could possibly be saying - WELCOME TO DA CLUB, BIYATCH! 3. What techniques did Hideki Naganuma use that made this piece so effective in this section of the game? "Let Mom Sleep" has various elements that blend together to make it the bar-setting funkfest that it is. The use of the brass samples at the beginning of the song has to be commended, as they add a funky 'kick' to the end of the first two bars. The organ sample from "Opposites Attract" helps to launch the song, too. Pretty much everything from the drums to the samples of 'Mom' complaining about the radio is used to maintain that all-important, rebellious, Rudie funk. Going back to "Grace and Glory", the chanting and organ at the start perfectly reinforce what the Devil's Contract is rumoured to do, and the mystical, evil feeling doesn't stop there. Naganuma-san uses samples of people screaming in pain, for crying out loud! The funk's still there, though, in the form of the bassline - though it has just the right soundfont to make you feel spooked out. That more along the lines of what you wanted, Darke?

  16. My bad DarkeSword. Didn't even notice these threads were under the music history forum. Just assumed this was the general music forum. Still no excuse for lazy posting on my part. Anyhoo, to dive a bit deeper into why I enjoy the Super Monkey Ball 2 soundtrack in context of the game. Besides sounding good, the juxtaposition between these bright environments and characters with music that becomes increasingly more ambient and darker by the time you reach the last two boss worlds gives a unique feel to the game. Maybe if I had a little more music knowledge and experience I could dig into why that is, but just as someone who enjoys games and music the soundtrack did an excellent job of matching the environments, and in a game where you're dying frequently and having to replay stages countless times over, the last thing the music should do is become a nuisance. Perhaps that's why the music becomes more ambient as the game progresses: to not needlessly draw the player's attention as the difficulty of each stage ramps up. May not have been the intention, but definitely an interesting coincedence.

  19. All, Just wanted to bring a quick update for anyone interested. I've been a bit inactive like a lot of you due to normal work/relationship things that get in the way. I've also recently upgraded my Studio One DAW which BROKE my Star Fox tracks. Well I finally got enough motivation & time to sit down and reinstall the old version and all my licenses FINALLY got it back to working condition! I'm doing some editing tonight and will hopefully have a new WIP for people to judge within a few days. Please get in my inbox if I don't, as the pressure will help me finish something in time. A little bit of effort ended with a lot of progress for me, so I urge anyone struggling with time or frustration - let me (or anyone else) know if we can help. Even if its just a reminder of what can be accomplished. Thanks everyone, I'm going to continue working now.
