ReMixer & Composer Merged into "Artist", Change Near-Complete
Liontamer replied to djpretzel's topic in Announcements
Dave's gotta do that in his spare time. May be more difficult to do with vB 3.8, but I'm sure he's looking into when he has the time. He can elaborate how easy or difficult it'll be to bring that back. -
Yep. No need.

OCR01307 - Donkey Kong Country "Chekan Winter"
Liontamer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Agree with that? What a dumb thing to do. Surprised I never posted here, as this was definitely an eye-opening from Kong in Concert. Jason transformed the source into a completely different animal, while still keeping the winter imagery of the source here intact. The imagery seems like a lot more violent snow storm than anything in the original game. Good stuff! -
Hahaha! Thank God we banned this douche. Excellent, relaxing piece. The main woodwind lacks realism, but the rest of the this was put together nicely. Pretty sweet that we followed up CV2 "Cursed Bloodline" with this. It's a fun contrast. Because, you know, "we're biased against all genres", and all that.

OCR01222 - Submarine Attack "Into the Deep"
Liontamer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I learned long before this mix not to skip mixes from games I didn't know. This stuff is gold. It's full of great stuff the whole way through, including Helen's amazing voice, the electric violin and then weed's guitar solo really meshing well. This is strong sauce some of you are missing out on. Don't be dumb. Check it out. -
OCR01372 - Shatterhand "Shattered"
Liontamer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
F that. These guys are doing it right. Nothing wrong with soloing. The track's a bit dated these days, as the energy could be more pronounced here, but this is still a really solid arrangement. Shatterhand has got some more good cuts besides this source tune, so I'd love to hear Andy revisit the soundtrack. -
OCR01144 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III "Turtle Wave"
Liontamer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Classic stuff, I've always been a big fan of this one. Chris's stuff is always unique, and the sound choices really gave it a retro-style while moving away from the actual sound of the NES. I really liked the pacing and energy here, and this mix introduced me to this soundtrack. I grew up on Turtles in Time, but never played Turtles 2 or 3 on the NES (and I hated 1!), so I'm always glad when a mix is intriguing enough to make me take notice of new game music. Mission accomplished. -
OCR01117 - Street Fighter Alpha 2 "Kasugano (Booty Mix)"
Liontamer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I could understand why someone could get sick of the voice samples, but this was still cool. With a nice laid-back groove, this was actually my introduction to Sakura's classic theme since I've never played Street Fighter Alpha 2 (only 1 & 3). Solid stuff! -
Not the most creative name, but a solid listen - LT * DJ Visiontech * Dustin Gardner * DJVisiontech@yahoo.com * http://www.myspace.com/DJVT08 Thanks for the opportunity to get my remix posted on this website. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Definitely one the best source tunes I've ever heard, ever since Rayza made his mix of the same theme. Coincidentally, the MP3 tags mention this being influenced by Rayza's own Whirlwind mix), which is pretty obvious given that the structure here also includes the original portions Hayden wrote. So just for everyone's edification, this is a remix of a remix. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=298 - (26) "Whirlwind" Rayza - "Whirlwind (Gale Force Mix)" The soundscape could have used a bit more treble, but this was still pretty decent. After introducing the Rayza countermelody from his mix at :28, the arrangement here moved things toward a club style, with some pretty standard beats coming entering at :49. 1:46-2:14 cut-and-pasted :49's section, which was a shame, before going back to the intro and then genre-adapting more from Rayza's mix for the finish. Overall, the new style is fine, but it's not a developed enough idea. Integrate some additional concepts and develop the arrangement ideas further. You could come up with some melodic or countermelodic variations, or original sections of your own to. This was a pretty short mix, yet ideas tended to retread and beyond the move to a club style. Right now there not enough in the arrangement or production style that gives this arrangement a unique-enough voice compared to Rayza's mix, and that's necessary in order to have us pass this (or any ReMix of a ReMix). The base here is good, Dustin; take it to the next level. Give this a more creative name as well. NO (resubmit)

Original Decision: http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18757 Contact info: Remixer name is Jabond23. Real name is Joe Nichols. Email address is jabond213@gmail.com Website is http://www.myspace.com/nintenjoe64 UserID is 25151 I did a rock remixed version of the dungeon theme from the original Legend Of Zelda for the NES. It also includes very small parts of the magic whistle and the item discovery theme but the overall song is the dungeon theme. Its an awesome song that always brings back the days of old. I used a keyboard with a virtual instrument found in Mixcraft 4 called Square Lead that has an old Nintendo sound to it. The virtual instrument has an almost identical sound to the old nintendo games. When i was making this song I really wanted to do an almost epic version of it by taking the original and making the riffs and solos soar. This is actually the 3rd submission for me for this exact song, so hopefully my mixing has dramatically improved enough for you guys to pass it! I completely revamped the song all the way through. So please let me know what you think? Thank you, Joe ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/download_file/14178 - Track 4 Opened up with the 8-bit style. Melody sounded a bit flat. Rock stuff kicked in at :19. The lead synth was mostly panned hard left while the rock stuff was mostly panned hard right. On headphones, it sounds awful, and you really shouldn't be doing it that way anyway. The lead synth didn't mesh with the rest of the instrumentation either. It's got to be better couched in the soundfield. Not sure why it goes into big chugs that bury the synth melody & vox countermelody at :38. Same issue at 2:52. It's trying to be a wall of sound, but there's still no attention to balance; you need to be able to easily hear how all of the parts contribute. Still think the transition at 1:55 just sounds goofy and out-of-place, but at least it's brief. Somewhat better balance at 2:09, even if the texture was still really messy. You could at least here the soloing a little bit. Really weak programmed drums at 3:31. The snare was weak and the drums didn't fill out the background at all. Ending at 4:09 was sudden and anticlimactic. Arrangement-wise, the overall energy is good, particularly the guitars, and obviously this expands upon the source material. More attention to production and balance would really help this, as well as properly padding out the background; right now it just sounds like the drums are the only element in the back. This was still mixed extremely sloppy, and the most cluttered parts (:38/2:52) sounded like a bad bootleg recording. I'd put this on the shelf and revisit it when your production chops improve; as long as you stay hungry and improve on that level, you'll come back to this in a couple of years and realize this is really poorly mixed. Don't be discouraged though, you're showing some potential with this piece and these resubs were an improvement. If you're not participating in Dwelling of Duels, you should be. Just keep at it and use the resources here and in other communities to improve. NO

ReMixer & Composer Merged into "Artist", Change Near-Complete

An introduction and request for permission.
Liontamer replied to RedKnox's topic in General Discussion
Playing mixes on the radio is cool. Asking for permission from artists is fine (since it's cool to interact with ReMixers in the first place), but you don't need explicit permission from the artist if it's on the site. Rather, we have some conditions we ask folks to follow. http://www.ocremix.org/info/Content_Policy Terms of Use part B is the most important in your case, i.e please credit the songs you're playing properly, so mention the artist(s) & site URL, not just the song title. Happy radio'ing! -
If there are official English translations, that's cool. I don't know of any album release for the DS soundtrack. Is there an iTunes release or sound test that gives info on official English track names? If so, give it up.

Thanks for the mirror! My non-IPv6 self isn't leet enough to view it. We'll get around to updating the torrents in the near future, but that all depends on a few things falling into place. We'll keep everyone posted.

The main killer though was the textures being too simplistic. Stuff like the clap groove (:55-1:42, 3:07-4:06), boom-tss (2:37-2:43) and Amen breaks (2:48-2:54) just sounded thin & flimsy for the energy you were trying to create. Build upon this with a bit more instrumental and production substance and do more with the arrangement of the source melody. NO

(I played the WiiWare version.) Commments: I didn't find any great rock/metal versions of the songs from Mega Man 9, so I decided to do it myself. And since I don't like 50 second songs or looping in music, I decided to make a medley instead. --------------------------------------------------------------- Rockman 9: The Ambition's Revival!! Original Soundtrack - (01) Opening 1 [:10-:27] (11) Plug Electric (Plug Man Stage) [:27-1:16] (13) Hornet Dance (Hornet Man Stage) [1:16-1:48] (10) Splash Blue (Splash Woman Stage) [1:48-2:07] (16) Boss [2:07-2:32] (15) Galaxy Fantasy (Galaxy Man Stage) [2:32-3:06] (09) Thunder Tornado (Tornado Man Stage) [3:06-3:51] (24) Flash in the Dark (Dr. Wily Stage 1) [3:51-4:17] (12) Jewel Temptation (Jewel Man Stage) [4:17-5:00] (13) We're the Robots (Dr. Wily Stage 2) [5:00-5:38] (14) Wily Machine [5:39-6:11] (05) Menu [6:11-6:23] (08) Concrete Jungle (Concrete Man Stage) [6:23-6:53] (14) Magma Burning (Magma Man Stage) [6:53-7:27] The snare drum tone was a weak link for portions of the track (e.g. :34-2:01). It was too subdued a sound and didn't add any power to the track. What was up with the abrupt changeups at 2:06, 5:00 & 6:53? The transitions at 3:06, 3:50 and 6:11 also should have been smoothed out. The other theme changes worked fairly smoothly, but there were a lot of jarring moments that prevented the arrangement from sound cohesive. Yeah, this is lacking focus & direction, which is a shame, because it's pretty capably put together. But medley-itis plus drums that don't bring the power means I can't pass it. If you'd be willing to refine the arrangement so that the changes from theme to theme are smoother, this could be a contender because the expansive ideas aren't bad. In terms of something that would fit more with the development we're looking for, perhaps 2 separate medleys that explore the individual themes more would be an option. Fairly good stuff regardless. I love what you're doing and have enjoyed all the great work others have offered and I have been wanting to contribute for some time. Hope you enjoy. --------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/FF7_psf.rar - 305 "Those Chosen by the Planet" The execution with these samples is pretty decent; could sound a bit richer, but it's pretty solid. The texture still felt a bit sparse in places, and even the most grandiose written parts like 1:51-end weren't full enough and powerful enough. Despite the qualms with the production, the arrangement was pretty substantial, and that's keeping the brief length and slow pacing in mind. The dynamics were solid, and would have been better had the instrumentation given the full effect. Though I'd rather see this tweaked, I can roll with this as is. YES (borderline)

First entered it in DoD back in March. However, I completely re-recorded it so the production doesn't suck, like the first version. www.tonydickinson.net -------------------------------------------------------------- Tough call. I know I asked Tony to give it a shot and sub this, since I liked it and felt it could get some support, but it's a tough call as a mega-medley. LuIzA's FF series medley "Fire Cross" is a great example of a medley executed very effectively. http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=mmx - A bunch of 'em This is definitely a lot quieter than expected. Do what you can to raise the overall levels and add some highs to it. The effort was made to smooth some the transitions, however, 1:23, 3:37 & 5:47 in particular were weak, abrupt transitions. Within the usage of each theme, everything was expanded and personalized, and 4:28-onwards was the arrangement at its most creative and interpretive. But I could just as easily see this getting NOed for the medley-itis structure of "do one theme, move quickly to the next" that didn't leave much breathing room for development of several of the themes. This is definitely an improvement over the DoD version on the production side, and I definitely like this, but it's just nagging on me that the way the themes are pieced together just isn't as cohesive as it should be. And so I've gotta vote honestly that it's a NO (resubmit).

The mixing was a bit cluttered and grating, the production of the electrosynth first used at :43 didn't quite mesh with the rest of the instrumentation. Seems like a guitar synth for the lead; not bad. Certainly produced decently for what it was; it managed to have some body even if the note-to-note movements sounded stiff. 2:57-4:14 was practically a cut-and-paste of :00-1:43, which was weak. Revisit the guitar articulations, refine the second half to bring something new to the arrangement instead of a retread and clean up the mixing a bit and this could be good to go. NO (resubmit)

Thank you for your consideration, Alecto & Redbeard ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=ff6 - "Wild West" (ff6-117.spc) Heard what seemed like some crackles/pops in the intro. 1:08 picked up the energy a bit with some beats, but the texture felt pretty empty. Really during the whole thing, the beats seem flimsy. The sequenced woodwind part at 2:18 has a sour note; I know it's supposed to be an arrangement, so there's no point off simply because that one note was changed, but it still sounded off. 2:52 moved into another take on the melody. It's definitely an interpretive take, but the way everything combines together doesn't click. 3:26 was another example where some new elements transitioned in that made the overall texture seem thin and empty. This definitely went for a new, interpretive sound, and I appreciate that. But the instruments just aren't working together in these combinations. Gonna have to leave it to another J to elaborate on. Matthew: Drums, Strings, Vocals and Mastering Name of Game: Sonic the Hedgehog Name of Song Arranged: Dreams of an Absolution (Silver's Theme) Composer: Lee Brotherton from Remix Factory System: Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 Year Released: 2006 Soundtrack Link: Connor's Comments: Back in July 2008, I was being plagued by Dreams of an Absolution being stuck in my head. A few days later, though I was talking to Matthew about the fact that he owed me a song, and I instantly thought of a doing this, becuase this song could really benefit from both his voice and his amazing wealth of instruments. So, I showed him the original song and he was hooked, soon enough I had a nice live percussion part on my computer. The vocals took awhile, 4 months to be exact, but I finally got them, and placed them in the mix. Then, someone suggested that it may be fit for Overclocked ReMix with the proper editing and mastering. So, I did so. And then Matt took the liberty of mastering it as well. Very polished for something that just started as a selfish little way to get a song out of my head. Oh, the title is just a reworking of the original, as this is a reworking. Matts Comments: This collaboration is the result of days after days of hard work. Though I must admit, we did have a near 4 month period of doing nothing, due to me being overly critical about my voice and not actually sending them to Connor until I re-did it. Though once that was out of the way, I gradually started to really love this version. All the acoustic-ness and groove sets me going and singing along. I would have more to say about this song, but I am currently speechless. I just hope that you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed performing and collaborating with Connor." ---------------------------------------------------------------- Awesome song from Mariko Nanba with lyrics & vocals by OCR alum LeeBro, now known as Bentley Jones. Sonic the Hedgehog Original Sound Track - (301) Dreams of an Absolution ~Theme of Silver the Hedgehog~ Short and sweet. Pretty good for a cover. Though the lyrics were 98% the same, the different pacing, new instrumentation & supporting parts, new vocal delivery and different vocal production really made this a different animal, IMO. The muddiness of the last few minutes was pretty bad though. I thought the first chorus at 1:47 was a little cluttered, but nothing that would be a dealbreaker. 3:31 until the finish had the vocals & sounds bleeding into each other too much. If you can tweak that, you've got my full vote, but for now I need to go conditional YES. Regardless of that issue, this was a good example of taking a modern song and showing how it's possible to retain the basic structure and still give it a new, creative coat of paint. EDIT (7/23): I wasn't a fan of the NOs honestly; this was a pure conditional YES on tweaking the production. Interesting changes to the arrangement. Hand drums sounded pimp as per the last version. On the minus side, I wasn't a fan of the new drums at 3:32. One of those things that will definitely annoy me, but I could live with it. Really didn't need those at all; the dynamics were fine before and they didn't add a thing except clutter. They weren't cohesive there IMO, since they were too loud and the pattern was too simplistic and bland. That also meant the last section was still a bit crowded, but it wasn't a big deal; this was much better than before in terms of the mixing. I'm a big fan of the original, and this handles it well. I'm glad to change my vote from a conditional YES to a full YES. Hope y'all collab again, guys, this was solid stuff.

Big deal. You can probably count the number of people on one hand who hate Capcom because of this. "Nintendo has been on my shit list ever since I learned the US Super Mario Bros. 2 wasn't the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2. HOW COULD YOU DO THAT?!? I hate you Nintendo."
