OCR00186 - Maniac Mansion "[go w*ld]"
DragonAvenger replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This has quite a lot of strange things going on for it. Too much for me, honestly. I can barely bring myself to finish it. I can see why people might like it, but it sounds like a mess to me. Sorry. -
I am going to take a shot at learning the process of using those newfangled programs that make absolutely no sense to me. If nothing else, so that I can lean the processes of mixing and possibly do some fun stuff for myself. Also, arrange Singing Mountain for acapella girls choir or girls choir and piano.

OCR01944 - Super Mario Galaxy "Meteorites and Rabbits"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm going to admit to having this game for over a year, and it hasn't even seen the inside of the Wii yet. Sad, I know. I can only describe this as quirky and mysterious, which is very cute, and very fun to listen to. The sounds work perfectly in the context, and the balance between them is very good. Some subtle panning adds a lot of flavor, as well. I like how the middle (1:55-2:08) feels almost as though it loses the time signature, yet still stays together. Nice work on that. I'm a little disappointed in the ending; it felt like it fell a little ways outside of the key signature. I can understand the artistic view of doing that, so if it was intentional I won't fault it, it just didn't work for me. Other than that one little tiny thing, nice work! -
OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
DragonAvenger replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
For me in Firefox all of the mascot's heads are being cut off by the Log In button. (Obviously a pre-log-in issue) Anyone else seeing that? -
Hit my 25. I'm also closing out all the mixes with 11 reviews (that I haven't reviewed).

OCR00606 - Sonic CD (JP) "Li'l Blue Bastard"
DragonAvenger replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This one is quite short, and manages to get through the main melody two times before coming to a close. I feel as though there isn't much change between the two repetitions, which is unfortunate, because it would have been nice to hear some variations or original material in the second time through. This feels more like it is a part of the game than a remix of the source, which is a bit unfortunate. I think the soundscape was pretty cool, though the drums were a bit weak as well, and it would have been nice to have heard a stronger percussion section. This one isn't doing much for me, sadly. -
OCR00386 - Chrono Trigger "No Time"
DragonAvenger replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The piano remains static throughout the mix, which I have to say is a big detractor from the overall piece. I wish there'd been a little more change-ups in both the piano and the drums (hi hat sound is a little annoying after a while). The guitar playing, however, is quite nice, and I love the improvisation going on over the chord structure. The melody is never too far behind, so there's always the Zeal feel (ha, rhyming) while providing some interesting new material. I feel like this one had a good start, but the lack of change in the background is unfortunately a pretty big flaw in this. The guitar does a good job of redeeming the mix, though, and is worth a listen. -
OCR00529 - Astyanax "Danger in Remlia"
DragonAvenger replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The melody of this one is catchy, and the synth handling it is interesting in that it seems to slide to every note. The concept of sliding through a song doesn't seem appealing in word, but Prot makes this work well. That, combined with the overall bounciness of this makes the track an interesting listen. The bass is lacking in volume and intensity, and the drums weren't the strongest point, but these things can be overlooked without much difficulty. I personally didn't find this too repetitive overall, but there are a few sections that could have been a bit shorter to increase the flow a bit. Overall the criticisms are pretty minor, and the track is an enjoyable one. -
OCR01854 - Rygar "Don't Mess with Rygar"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This was in no way what I was expecting when I downloaded this mix, and I have to say that I don't think any other mixes on the site that have pleasantly surprised me as much as this one did. The orchestration of this one is fantastic, and the resemblance of In the Hall of the Mountain King is apparent and enjoyable. I'm going to be on the other side of the boat about the length, I think this one is just perfect. Any longer and I think this would have overstayed it's welcome or lost it's intensity. Awesome work! -
OCR00358 - Killing Game Show "Daft"
DragonAvenger replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Plenty of attention to detail in this. The synths are all sounding pretty good, and the balance is also solid. There isn't too much real melody throughout, making it a bit difficult to focus on (easily distracted here by the internet), but it works nicely as background. I'm still not crazy about the voice clips, but that's a personal pet peeve of mine, and doesn't necessarily mean they are bad. The panning is particularly good at 1:58 to near the end. I was really enjoying that section. I like the mix, though it's not the most ear grabbing thing out there. -
OCR00233 - Final Fantasy VII "Neoteric Assembly"
DragonAvenger replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This one has held up well for it's age. It's very upbeat throughout, through the drums and almost bouncy background guitars. The lead guitar is very far front, a bit too far, but it does have a pretty good sound and isn't unpleasant to listen to. I like the adaption of the source, it still has a bit of mystery, but now it's a happy mystery. The weird synth panning in the background works pretty well, and I hadn't noticed that until now, nice stuff. Don't let the low ReMix number deter you from checking this out. P.S. - Downloading this had the track come up as "Final Fantasy 7 Reunion OC ReMix" (rather than Neoteric Assembly) on iTunes. Might want to get that checked out. -
OCR01942 - Super Mario Bros. "Bros with Dix"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I think Mario had a little too much caffeine. This usually is a hyper active problem, but in this instance it equals lots of fun. I feel like I was just on a roller coaster ride of music. Roller coaster rides are fun, though, just like this mix. It's got a lot going on, and it happens very fast, but it's all good stuff, and you get a lot of little smiles on the way. Samples aren't the greatest, but as mentioned by others, they happen so quickly that you can't really dwell on the sounds before you have to focus on what's next. I think this would have been nicer (just a bit!) if the sounds could really back up the mixing, but I'm not going to complain on that when everything else is done quite well. Nice work. -
OCR01943 - Final Fantasy VI "Behind Enemy Lines"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Well, I can pretty much rephrase what everyone else has been saying. Nutritious has all those details down that really bring mixes to life. The style of this was augmented just right to really accentuate the originals, and the original writing fits in perfectly with the existing material. It's also great that these sources aren't often touched, so they get some time in the spotlight. The transitions are really great, it's a seamless movement from source to source. I really like the attention payed to the background lines. The support they provide to the melody is what's catching my attention here. An example is the timpani line right at the end, they really accentuate the ending. Do check this one out, you'll enjoy it. -
OCR00082 - Zelda II "Thelonius Temple"
DragonAvenger replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a mix that surprises me that it has such few reviews. If it came out now, I would understand the lack of people hyping about it, but for #0082 I would think there would still be a good amount of excitement, and this one probably was pretty awesome for the day. Bringing this to jazz is an easy step, and I find this to be pretty well done. I like the writing on the intro especially, though not as much the performance. The transition into the dungeon theme is just right. I feel like overall this could have been maybe 8 clicks slower on a metronome, it feels just a little rushed as it is. Also, that is one very hyper hi hat. Check this one out, some good stuff going on here. -
OCR01856 - SD Snatcher "Difficult Move Indeed"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The overall feeling on this one is fantastic. It has that perfect 'sneaking' feeling, yet has it's own unique spin to avoid being too chiche. The timpani was a nice touch, and I liked the breakdown section in the middle. Check this one out, it's good for sneaking around. -
OCR01879 - Final Fantasy IV "In the Land of Dwarves"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I originally wasn't a fan of this track. Part of it had to do with not being crazy with the source, part of it due to the quirkiness of the mix. The more I listen, though, the more this has grown on me. This really takes that quirkiness and makes it shine because of it. Along with that we have a bunch of genre changes, all with some nice transitions in between, some nice drum work, guitar work, and nice supporting synths. 3:27 is now my favorite moment, and I have no idea why, because it was the part that bothered me the most at first. I'd encourage more people to sit on this one for a bit before they judge it, and I bet it would grow on them as well. -
OCR01122 - Life Force "Temple of Life"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The industrial section is what really makes this mix. I'm going to have to agree with others that the sections before that don't really stand out nearly as much, and can even venture into the generic gray area. It stays safe, and it's nice to listen to, but, aside from the powertools, I can't say I'll be remembering much else about this one down the road. -
OCR00947 - Wizball "Transformation"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I was skeptical with the first note, but I have to say the rest of the mix had me pleasantly surprised. Way to take a risk and run with it. Lots of good things going on in this. Bass really rocks the mix, and supports the main synth quite well. Going back to that synth, I would have not imagined that a long, flowing note could really sustain a mix. The drums and quick moving arpeggios really add a nice contrast, and in the end this makes quite a good combination. This one is a good find. -
OCR01809 - Lufia "Flowers, Life and Memory"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The trumpet sounds in this make me happy, they are pretty awesome. There are still some moments that aren't quite believable, they are still pretty darned good. I'm really liking the arrangement on this as a while. There is a lot going on, but everything is clear, directional, and adds to the piece as a whole. It's a medley, but it really doesn't feel like one, as each theme is constituting to the whole. Great use of silence, that's something you don't hear enough of these days (I blame an ADHD society). Quite a nice piece, and there aren't enough reviews on this, for sure. -
OCR01717 - Super Metroid "Fuzzy Green Feeling"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This isn't my most favorite of genres, but I'll give it a shot. Good source to work with in this style, I like the back and forth around :25 or so. This shows a good way to incorporate the source in a new style. A little later on though, at 0:53 the guitars sound like their in a wind tunnel or something. For some reason that really bothers me. Both the solos work well and the trade-off is pretty good, so nice work on that. It's a good listen, not really my style, but worth keeping and I think more people should take a listen to this and review! -
OCR01714 - Super Dodge Ball "All-Star Doskpop"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like that this mix is very in your face. It has this vibe that you don't wanna mess with it, or you're gonna get messed up. Haha I like the synths used throughout, they all fit the genre very well and bring out the seriousness of the mix. There are some moments that feel very Megaman-esque, which is also a good thing. I'd have liked a little variation on the volume/soundscape. Overall things stay very close to the same intensity in terms of those two subjects, and some changes would have make other sections stood out more. Aside from that, this mix has some good writing, and is worth checking out, easily. -
OCR01367 - Dizzy the Adventurer "Mix Dizz"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Totally infectious, cute, and cuddly. This has a lot going right for it, which makes it a winner in my book. Love the doo-wop back-ups and organ throughout. This really fits the genre and has some very cute lyrics to book. Check this one out, really. -
