OCR00012 - Paperboy "Peaperboayh"
DragonAvenger replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Most people who commented have it: beats are awesome, background noises are not. The voices don't seem to have a place in the track, whch is what gets people thinking they are extraneous. Bass line is repetative, but that's alright. Generally fits this style of mix, though I'm a fan of having more variation myself. Easily something to start rapping over. Not my thing, but for it's age it holds up pretty decently. -
OCR00072 - Chrono Trigger "Belthasar"
DragonAvenger replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I honestly wouldn't have thought that this track was as early as it was. A lot of it holds well even today. Drums are the obvious focal here, and they get the job done well. I'm going to agree with OA that if the rest of the track were brought up to match things would rock just a tad more. Interesting tidbit that Belthasar is the first track mixed for CT, and not Corridors of Time. Nice work. -
Love the bass, it keeps the track together throughout. Plenty of other awesome stuff going on. The track is never serious, and yet has a great production throughout, even in the 'noodly' sections. The change of styles throughout is another great point going for this. Just when you get settled into one feel, *bam* there's a change-up. You're on your toes throughout he mix, in a good way. I'm gonna agree with OA here, the brass isn't great, but it works for what it is, and I honestly didn't find it detracting at all from the overall mix. Nice work.

OCR01929 - Castlevania III "Madd Forest"

I'm all out of any praise I could give after reviewing the other two tracks. Awesome work, and more people should be reviewing this. -
OCR01927 - Castlevania "Vampire Snap"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm glad that I'm not hearing an over-used whip-crack throughout this song. Something made me fear that was going to happen (a few too many times through Juese Belmont, I think), but it's obvious that I had no need to think such evil things like that could happen. JM does some awesome work with jazz, and it's quite obvious here. I think I could almost cut and paste my last review here, change a couple sentences, and I'd be good to go. Fantastic soundscape going on, unique and funky. Transistions are smooth and seamless. Just hard not to tap my foot to this stuff. I'm a little dissapointed in the fade-out though. Not sure how to get a good ending, however, so I'm not very helpful. Otherwise, great job. -
OCR01928 - Castlevania II "The Solace of the Daylight"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
My review got killed because I waited too long Let's see what I remember writing.... I'm not really too familiar with the source (gasp, I know), but here and there I can recognize a couple parts. Overall things stand out on their own, so even without a connection to the source this has some fun things going for it. Overall the unique set of sounds makes this stand out, and the vibe of the piece is really refreshing. Loving the vibraphone solo (could be just a smidge louder though). The six note melody starting around 1:98 carries on just a bit too long. It's nearly a minute before it moves on. Things change up as this is going on, but I think it could have moved on a bit earlier. A nice listen, and worth pickin up, along with the rest of the album. -
OCR01922 - Xenogears "Akkadia Rising"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
If I listened to this blind, I would have NEVER guessed that this was the same Avaris who I worked with for Radical Dreamers. You have come a ridiculously long way, and this is complete awesome. I love the overall tone of the piece. I think the drumwork stands out the most to me on this, it never gets stuck in just one groove. Prophet's sounding pretty sexy in this too. All around nice saxwork. Great work to the both of you! -
OCR01923 - Xenogears "Daijiru (Too Hot for Clothes)"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Unfortunately this one can't stay on my ipod. I usually play some random songs for some of my middle school classes, and this isn't quite something I can have start playing during school. XD Too bad, because it's catchy as hell. I feel slightly dirty for listening to it, though. -
Not as easily abusable as the junction system overall, though. I didn't even mention the "Recover" and "Revive" skills you can use for free once you learn them.

OCR01920 - Xenogears "Omen (R3 Mix)"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I am extremely surprised that this mix doesn't have more reviews than it does now at this point. This really captured my attention from the beginning with the pulsating beat. It's literally echoing through me, in a totally awesome way. Not so awesome for my cats though :/ I love the depressing feel of this mix overall. That feeling is portrayed perfectly, and I can easily see why this would be called "Omen." Glitching throughout is subtly but very effectively done, along with most of the other effects. Nice work! EDIT: Oh yea, and heartbeat = creepy. -
Ok, I'll bite. Final Fantasy VIII: Extremely abusable junctioning/magic system. I mean, stabbing yourself and healing for 5000 hp? ...whatever.

OCR01857 - Final Fantasy VI "Vision of Celes"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I will whole-heartedly agree with Dave that this is very reminiscent of "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral". Very slow, very dramatic, very exxagerated, and a pretty awesome arrangement. At times the harmonies and instrument balance works just right to give me shivers. Unfortunately, this is one of those pieces that just can't be done justice without a full orchestra, which isn't the easiest thing to get. The lack of realism in any of the instruments does take this down a notch or two, sadly. Here's to hoping that someday someone pulls this off live (and gets an awesome recording of it!). -

I agree that the search bar looks pretty good as is. I think the alpha nav should be in the music pop-up screen instead of "List all songs alphabetically". -

Nice work on making a badass mix. I'm tapping my foot to this one. Except for the cymbals, those need some upgrading. -
OCR01131 - Sorcerian "Cursed Piano"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a very pretty piece that has some very nice subtle changes. As DJP mentioned, the left hand really gives the mix some character by staying active throughout the entire mix. Overall the piece is very well played, but there were a couple of spots that I wished had been just smoothed out a little. No real mistakes, things just felt a little awkward to me, but then again it might just be me thinking things. The recording quality is also a bit of a bummer, but it's certainly still a nice listen. Kudos. -
This came up on random on itunes, so I'm going to take advantage of it to write a review here. Overall Abadoss is a master at classical writing, which is always a nice listen. I've loved hearing your arrangements, and I look forward to hearing what you can cook up next. The original is definately there, but it's also your own, which really is what I enjoy about your works. Beating a dead horse here (11PM and I can be clever?), but the sample quality is your downfall. I'm glad you've collaborated a lot more lately to make some really nice sounding pieces, because it's a shame that these pieces can't realize their full potential. Nice work though, keep arranging awesome stuff!

OverClocked After Dark - The Former Thread of Days of Yore
DragonAvenger replied to Brushfire's topic in General Discussion
And there's no space between my name, which half bugs me. Typing in "DragonAvenger" into google brings up the book by the same name (with the space) moreso than me, which makes me slightly annoyed. I had the name first -
That would be me, and I am still looking. Give me a couple days and I can PM you stuffs.

OCR00838 - Lightening Force "Bio Tech"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very 80's feeling, in a sort of nostalgic way. I was raring to go fight some baddies after this one, or something. I'm going to copy OA in saying that overall this feels very "narrow" in terms of sound. Not sure if that's the right wording, but it felt constricted a bit. Overall it's not a make or break deal, so it's ignored fairly easily. Nice to hear the Coop's beginnings on the site. -
This is interesting. It's fast paced, in your face (whoo unintentional rhyme), but sounds...fake. I have to say the qualities of the sounds overall are really bringing the track down for me. This isn't a genre I'm really a fan of either, so that doesn't help, but the artificial feeling is really unfortunate. Would be nice to hear this live sometime.

I don't think I ever commented, but I have been contemplating doing a Christmas remix. I'll probably see if I can get it done for the album, and I'll probably need some help actually writing up the music and producing and stuff. If anyone's interested, let me know.

OCR00795 - Final Fantasy IX "Rose of April"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A lighter take on the theme that I have enjoyed for a while. Looking at it a little more closely, I'm noticing that the clarinet sound is pretty good, so props for getting that and making it sound very nice. The pizzicato strings left a bit to be desired, but I'm going to blame that on the age of the mix. Brass sounds pretty fake as well, but that's a consistant problems with most mixes (just no good sounds for brass out there). I like that this is more of an subtle emotional change than a huge change-up of the mix overall. Refreshing in that aspect. Nice work. -

I would really like to have A-Z links to games available for the music section. I found it took a lot longer to find one mix from FFV that I couldn't remember the name of. -
OCR00729 - Streets of Rage "Going Up"
DragonAvenger replied to Disco Dan's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It's interesting to hear this track in a different light. I'm definately aware of how short the source is, so hearing how people can spread it out differently is a neat concept. ryu7x really takes what he can from this. The song gets repetative for my tastes, and while DJP says in the write-up that he might overuse the 'new section added in' theory to mixing a song, I feel that it would have been welcome here. Something to break up the action could have really refreshed the concept and made further variations later on be more welcome. Overall, the song is decent, but it doesn't catch my ear.
