  1. Supa Fly Heard this on Star's site a week ago and was wondering when this was gonna get posted. Easily his best vocals yet. Alot of the intonation is fuckin awesome and really sets the mood. The first guitar solo felt a lil too happy, it changed the mood drastically from the intro. The second guitar part is golden. All n all this is friggin epic. Lots o' good remixes lately.
  2. The brass from :20 to :28, did you vary up the velocities on it? It sounds dynamically stagnant. The next brass melody after that sounds better. Haha right when the GITS vocals came in a helicopter flew by my apartment...all the sudden I was like ohhh that's sweet! It was all low end bc I had my headphones on but it sounded awesome...back to the review. The percussion hits from 2:01 till 3:07 (it's the same sound going the whole time) tend to get repetative. Try varying up the velocities just a bit. They have such a presence that as the song goes on they tend to loose that presence because they are right up front for about a whole minute. Maybe try to introduce another drum sound to really keep the tension their in the song. I'm being really picky, I honestly think this song kicks serious ass. It's one thing to have a great concept for a mix it's another to be able to pull it off. I def think you have pulled it off.
  3. Ah nice it's right in the middle of darkness and the light except sped up. Can't believe I didn't pick that up, it's one of my favs on OCR for good reason. Thanks dude.
  4. This is awesome. The song at 3:46(Zelda3 credits maybe) is friggin amazing. All around great stuff as usual.
  5. Awesome stuff dude, more FFA mixes is always a good thing. I actually really like the ending. I actually think the new age type of of feel this has goes very well with the FFA soundtrack. The various elements although individually might seem different work well together. I def think it ziwtra usual attention to detail and timing that pulls it through. Very calming yet upbeat at the same time. Haha the voices at 3:34 were a nice touch. Def a keeper.
  6. You don't need a huge expansive knowledge of music theory to be a good musician. Learning basic music theory and SATB part writing can really help though and make things much easier and more enjoyable. I agree with Kanthos about the synths. Pick one synth and learn how to use it. Then learn another, and another and so on. When you play around with a synth try to get a sense for the characteristics of the generic wav types. (saw, sine, tri, square) While making music is fun it takes a lot of time and effort to see results. It can be a slow process at times, so patience is key. If I was starting out from the beggining I'd take 1 of 2 ways to learn to make music. 1. Learn the basics and try to do everything right. Keep things simple and build slowly. Slowly build your knowledge base and skills. 2. Experiment like crazy. Just do crazy shite. You'll create some cool new ways of doing things and prob develop your own style faster. The problem with this is you might have to unlearn some of the bad habits you pick up. I went with option #2. Don't ever be afraid to try crazy shite you can come with some amazing sounds this way. Here is a friggin awesome website for learning a lot of the basics. It's a long read but you might find alot of your answers here. http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm As for ear training I heard people say Golden Ears Ear Training is suppose to be really good. http://www.midi-classics.com/b/b3654.htm
  7. Wicked cocept dude. Bonus points for Ghost in the Shell too, i loved the original those vocals are from. The leads and harmonies sound thin in the intro. The percussion sounds are much louder, and are masking the brass. As soon as I start getting some feelings relating to the brass the high end percussive come in and overshadow it. The Crashes are a lil sharp, maybe just tone those down a bit. Maybe add a lil bit of reverb with a low decay on 2khz and above on those crashes. Besides that can't wait to hear more on this track it's sounding pretty awesmoe.
  8. Haha nice stuff Siamey. This is alil departure for your usual style. It def carries a nice groove throughout. Lots of lil FX and shite all over the place def makes this a song to keep on listening too. I actually really liked the intro it caught my attention right away. You def used the source tune to your advantage. Def one of my favorite remixes I've heard in awhile. Good stuff dude.
  9. (I fall victim to that sometimes too) It's so easy to throw down tempo beats over ambient music. Of course the timing with the FX is the hard part. I can def see how some people felt this song was one long extended note. The changes are subtle and the textures stay very mucht he same until 2:45. This does create a very stirring atmosphere and emotions, which IMO is the whole point to ambient style music. The mix is def not for everyone but it accomplishes what it sets out to do.
  10. Awesome. In the marimba part IMO have an fx sound decrescendo in the beggining and then crescendo back up again. Also try out some stutters by using 128th notes in the piano on some of the natural instruments. Use them in places for build ups and breakdown. It's kind of a gimmick but I think it would go well with this song. The beggining of the marimba part sounds like one of the songs from chrono trigger, I think frog's theme. All the rythms and basic stuff you got goin on sounds really sound good. Lots of little things in this I keep on picking up after a few listens. Keep on adding more production values and melodies and harmonies. The hats and crashes sound really good but could be masking some of the FX and harmonies a lil bit. Try cutting all the freqs below 500 or 600hz and see if that allows some of the background elements to shine through more. One thing on the arrangement, where is this piece goin? It sounds awesome, but I am not getting a clear sense of the overal picture in terms of how the different sections tie in together. This is def one of my biggest problems too, it ain't easy. The strings playing marcato sound amazing, def concentrate on utilizing them more in later sections. The synth design is simple but def fits the song.
  11. I agree with Leah that the basic feel is very good. You have a lead but it is so soft it doesn't sound like a lead. The current instrument you are using for the lead would be good for a breakdown section. Alot of your basic sound design works. You need a whole lot more. The feeling of the song needs to dynamically expand. Add in different elements to boost the emotion your feeling. Currently the whole song feels and sounds like one giant loop. That gurgle FX, put some reverb and stereo imager on that sucker. Turn the knobs on the stereo imager all the way to the left. Go listen to some of Red Tailed Fox's mixes. (They're all done in Reason) He adds in lots of different elements changing in and out. Writing music with different interchanging elements that create a give and take sort of feel will really add alot to your songs. Also check out this mix by DannyB http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01179/. If you look through the reviews he has a link to the reason file in there. If you are somewhat comfortable with Reason and have a general sense of what is going on get the book 'Power Tools for Reason 3.0' it's only like $17 on amazon it comes with some refills. It has some incredible tips that will send your skills and understanding of reason through the roof. The chapter on the CV inputs is easily worth more than the $17 you pay for it. Keep working and expanding on this one dude, with enough time and effort it could really turn out to be good.
  12. Do have GuitarRig2 or any type of amp simulator? In GR2 you can position the mics in relation to the amp. This help create the correct spacing you'd be looking for. If you'd like you could rip the 4 different parts and send them to me and I could use GR2, to see if it would produce the results you'd be looking for. If you do this though, turn off the reverb completely as GR2 adds an airy feel anyways. Edit: If you do have GR2 and are going to try and use, be careful and mindful bc it take some serious tweakage to get the sound right. I've used it a couple of times and failed miserably, but after messing with it more I've gotten better.
  13. DA the vocals on the newest version sound much improved. I remembering you saying before that efields won't be touching the background again. So if your wanting to stick with what you got and want to try and get this posted here IMO are the options you got: Have someone add lots of xtra rythms and ear candy to the background. Lots of ping pong panning. This song needs to take make full usage of the stereo field, currently it doesn't. Do some crazy FX and processing on the vocals. Prob do the 1 dry and 1-3 insanely wet vocal track trick. Lots of automation with delays, vocoding, gated reverbs the whole lot. Have one part of the vocals sidechained to the beat of the drums to create a pumping effect in the vocals. This will create more energy and help tie the vocals and the background together. Also the mastering on the entire track would need to be very well done to give the whole song a much thicker feel. Kudos on really proggressing this far in all the vocal work on this track.
  14. I'd say do the panning by ear. Def keep the bass centered. I don't know the spacing of a jazz set up either. But in terms of giving everything proper space, I agree keeping the piano and drums on opposite sides is a good idea.
  15. Def some hot shitte dude. Panning; you should pan each of the instruments slightly to represent an actual jazz band playing. Everything sounds very centered and soft right now. Granted everything should sound soft, but it is a lil too soft. Work on lil build ups in the dynamics. Prob do this through velocity editing. Another thing might be to get the piano and winds playing off eachother for one section. Overall in terms of mastering the song needs to sound wider and have more presence. Alot of this composition is top notch.
  16. Wow dude it really sounds like you're starting to come full circle as an artist this is really impressive. Art of Zen is my fav out of the previews...I'm sucha whore for ethnic sounds and a late 80's earl 90's feel. It has a really good melody. They all sound like killer tracks. Mind Bender sounds like SGX. Kudos for having the balls to release the album during exams. I just picked up a copy. Haha you didn't mention Tauce in the album description...poor Tauce. Good luck dude!
  17. Yeah dude this rocks. Kudos on using some vox from Shaun of the Dead, awesome movie. Really liking the synth design and how everything flows together.
  18. or Timbaland...Amadeus Amadeus:tomatoface: Congrats Blad
  19. This was a really promising song Atlus, I really liked it. By chance try to hook up your Hard Drive as a storage drive on another computer and see if you can't at least access the files from it. Of course if your broken HD is already just a storage drive then that doesn't matter.
  20. Yeah Snapple that sig is messed up... Fishy: Thanks for the heads up dude. We wanna schedule the 3rd WIP around people's exam schedules so no one gets screwed. When are your exams over? Prometheus: Yeah dude your totally welcome to join. Although about 'Lost...Broken Shards' Miszou claimed it a few days ago. Sorry, rpggamer180 hasn't updated the track list since Leah and Miszou joined. He is gonna do a big epic song with synths and orchestral elements. We have made exceptions for people doing the same song if they do them in completely different styles. Here are the tunes that are actually open. If you liked 'Lost...Broken Shards' take a look at 'The Wounded Shall Advance Into The Light' or 'In a Dark Sleep.' The Valley Where Wind Is Born Leftovers of The Dreams of The Strong Stage of Death In A Dark Sleep The Wounded Shall Advance Into The Light The Blue Traveler The Jaws of Ice The Sky, The Clouds, And You Solaris: Eden of Heaven Pray For The People's Joy The Beginning And The End Star of Tears Knight of Fire Steel Giant Oh btw I have found a midi of 'The Beggining and the End' if anyone is interested.
  21. Hey wat up dude! It's prob gonna be sometime in early to mid june. We just gotta decide on the actual date now. Prob goin for 2 WIP deadlines this summer, and hopefully by the end of the summer we'll have a lot of finished tracks.
  22. Yeah dude this semester has been kickin my ass too, it's almost over though. Oh yeah all the posts...most of em have been here in the WIP forums. If you're really wanting this to get on OCR IMO a couple things to keep in mind: Make the fruity peak controller your bitch lover. Take a bunch of thin pads as background music and tie them together with all the different levels of percussion. This should give the piece an assload worth of movement. The peak controller ain't easy to use though. Def throw in some hard panning left and right. Some ping pong panning. All that good stuff. I'd prob use a nice analog synth for the lead set on legato with a lil bit of portamento for some movement. If you don't got a good analog synth, just sequence out the melody and I can use Pro53 to make a bitchin lead sound for you. If you want I can the final master on this for you. I got some nice plugins now that can really boost the quality on the final master.
  23. Nice phat beats dude. Maybe for a nice breakdown section you could take the hats/claps/clashes and do some serious time warping in Live. My only complaint about the song is in the intro(which is really good) is by :38 the plucked sound starts to become monotonous. If your in the right frame of mind to listen to the song it goes perfectly fine, but if your in another frame of mind it becomes monotonous IMO. Feldspar is a friggin awesome synth. I like it's sounds for mellow leads, it beats anything from NI in that department. Also the fx plugin has the really nice trance gate feature you can throw over any sound. Besides all that jazz this is def sweet, and will be even better once you add in all of your usual ear candy.
