As a MAGFest staffer with apparent ability to lord over mere attendees, I am informing you that said beard must be eliminated for the sake of obtaining MAG-booty. Who knows? Maybe the armband will be green next year...

As a longtime fan of the early CB games, I've wanted to mix this theme as well. Probably add in the Warped rendition of it as well.

Hmmm. Well, I'm not trying to plug into a regular computer monitor. And if the USB devices experience too much lag, I can wait until I build my own machine. There are many capture cards available, but none seem to accept component (which I need, since I have a Wii and PS2 and enjoy my colorz). At least none that I've seen, anyway.

A tall order? No question. But in software development you have to weigh that versus the gained longevity and versatility of the program. This is precisely what several companies have done when they've realized they've reached programmatic limitations. Apple, Cycling74, Animusic, and many others have all rebuilt their products from the ground up and have, in the end, been far better for it. Plus, Delphi? It's a derivative of Pascal. Time to move on, people.

So I'm thinking of investing in a gamebridge type device in order to play games if I'm not going to be around a TV for a while, and also to record console gameplay on my laptop. Unfortunately, the Gamebridge seems kind of low end. I don't mind paying a little more for quality, but I don't know what other types are out there. I don't even know what to google for. Any help along these lines would be appreciated, especially from those who have managed to record gameplay directly before.

Yeah, I know... somehow, I didn't realize editing Brad's post that way wouldn't say what I wanted to. Which was that there really aren't many girls on the Internet who aren't paired off. Meh. Epic fail for me.

On a Mac, it's right here. On a PC, I suppose Zircon can tell you. I guess I can't directly respond since I've never worked with those. However, I have worked with the MBox, which I'm guessing is somewhat similar. And god did I have an annoying time with that. The problem is that I never knew which program was going to output audio where, and I had to always ensure the audio busses on each track were sending correctly. As for the cards themselves, I don't know how consistently such soundcards perform in practice, but at least in theory I'd imagine that the lower transfer rate of USB/Firewire (as opposed to the built-in soundcard on the frontside bus) could pose more risk. But then again, I have a Duet which interfaces through Firewire and I've had no problems so far. So is it possible to get low-latency audio on a PC laptop? I'm certain. But at least the way I see it, I think Macs are better for it for the same reasons many people will say: it's straightforward, it's simple, and it works. Moreso on all counts than the PC laptop I used to own, anyway. We all know no one is going to convince anyone else to switch to anything. But that's not really what I see this to be about. We're not spinning our wheels here; we're revealing our preferences, workflows, likes and dislikes and the reasons behind them. As Hy Bound said, we'll keep doing things the way we're doing them, but we'll all learn something at the same time. And that's good enough for me.

Anybody know anything about midi signal specifications?
The Pezman replied to SenPi's topic in Music Composition & Production
Can you post more details about this? I've become pretty interested in this idea. How do you code drivers, anyway? Is it as difficult as it sounds? -
CompUSA? Does that still exist?

Sorry, I guess I need to clarify. For one, in any live environment involving a computer, you're 99% likely using a laptop. So you can't count on any high-end desktop class soundcards. The supposed solution for PC laptops? ASIO4All, which is meant to give ASIO-class responsiveness to PC laptops. That is what I could never get to work effectively. Ever since I went Mac, that's all become a thing of the past.

Fixed, 10char.

Shinra: We're named after a genius kid in a breathing apparatus. Who eventually figured out how to utilize the farplane's energy. Which is what we now call the Lifestream. So yeah. Also: We're not evil. We just like our monopoly. On everything.

So let me understand what the plan is in terms of the tracklisting. Are you going to keep it the same? Add in more? Make it more up to the remixers to submit boss themes they'd like. Myself, I like almost every boss theme I've ever heard, and I really hope I'll get myself together remix-wise once I graduate in may, so it should be just the time to submit. Let me know what you plan.

I think one attraction to Live, especially with this announcement, is its modularity. Everyone's workflow and aim is going to be different, and Live is really really good about allowing users to set up the program the way they want it, as well as using external hardware which may or may not have been specifically designed for it. Just like (wouldn't you know it?) Max/MSP. I don't know FL Studio well (especially now that I'm a Machead), but I would conjecture that FL Studio's lack of a Mac version is also a roadblock for its perception as a program to use live. This is owing to Mac's Core Audio drivers, and Windows' lack thereof (and I could never get Asio4All to work satisfactorily). Obviously, in a live environment lack of latency is key, and in the laptop world you just can't count on a PC for that.

http://home.novint.com/ Anyone tried this thing yet? At nearly $200 and as not a big FPS fan, I have no ambition to go out and buy one, but I'm damn curious whether anyone's tried it, and if so what it's like. Apparently it reacts with force and resistance to mirror the scenario you're in (shooting a gun, running a virtual hand over a smooth or jagged surface, etc).

I heard that something like this would be coming down the pike for some time. This will hopefully allow more "indie" artists to get into mainstream live performance, and vice versa.

If anyone has problems recognizing me look for the guy who looks vaguely like Zircon.

It will always be Sonic zipping through those seizure-inducing Chemical Zone pipe pathways for me. And Super Mario World. It was probably tied with S3&K as my favorite platformer of the day, because SMW was perhaps twice as long as any other game I'd played to that point. I also played lots of Super Mario Land and Kirby's Dream Land when I was maybe four on my dad's Gameboy (which quickly became my Gameboy).

diy & experimental electronic music
The Pezman replied to analoq's topic in Music Composition & Production
As long this thread exists let's post/talk about other stuff along these lines, since I totally geek out about it. This one's kinda crazy; a performance by this media artist who came to my school sophomore year. Since I was just getting into the stuff at the time, I volunteered to be one of the singers. You can see me at 2:27, the bass/baritone singer. No, I don't understand what the hell was going on. -

Had this for years, as I've crossed paths with it several times in my travels, but I want to wait til after college to get into it (especially now with Version 5). But I've seen the shit it can do: Just downloaded this the other day. Is there much of a difference between it and chucK? I've wondered about using tools like these for remixing. At any rate, I haven't developed my own synths or anything like that, but I might start hanging out here, in which case it could happen. In the meantime, if you do anything with it let us know. -
I'm surprised this hasn't come up. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/118705 So it creates a visualization of the appropriate instruments when it's fed a MIDI file. Again, much like the famed Animusic video but nowhere near as high end. The only problem is that you don't have any control during the song. You sit it through and watch the camera pan from instrument to instrument. But for a free product, I think it's absolutely amazing, and fun to look at.

OC ReMix seeking volunteers for interview transcriptions
The Pezman replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in General Discussion
You don't need any transcribers any more, do you? If so, for what? If not, shouldn't this thread either be locked, unstickied, or changed to read "Transcriber sign-ups?" -
It was there again?! Okay, who's car was that?

Ooooooh... Nothing to use as a standard, but this could allow for some interesting audiovisual collages people could put together and perhaps host here as well.
