I feel it was easier to grok the amount of music a ReMixer had made for OCR on the previous artist page. I hope the numbers of ReMixes and albums projects participated in could be added to the album and ReMix widget titles. I also liked the full list of album projects on the artist page previously. Perhaps the album/ReMix titles could also say "Latest albums" and "Latest ReMixes" if the full list doesn't fit to the page, and the headers could act as links to the full album list / full ReMix list pages. I guess the same goes for the album and ReMix widgets for the organization main pages.

Since at least my page has a lot of empty space below the album widget, it makes me think perhaps there could be some info about the artist's tracks on the album in that space.

Nice update though! I especially like the playlist, and it's nice to have the social media links and stuff up front and prominent. I like the tabbed approach as well.

@evktalo All good points, appreciate the feedback! Right now the goal is to update all the OTHER pages to match, so the site is a bit less of a chimera, THEN update the overall design a bit, THEN go back and tweak every last bit to perfection (or something much closer!) - these suggestions kinda fall in the last phase, but I'll see what I can do!

  2. As with @OA's Skies of Arcadia mix, this is probably a DP, but I don't know the source that well. If source checks out, feel free to make DP candidate. -djp

After my last Dark Souls 3 remix, I got to see what people's favourite songs were from the soundtrack by requests. This track probably got the most requests, and I was daunted by it because I just could never think what to do with it. Usually I pick something I enjoy and the idea naturally forms because I have a personal attachment to it, when you realize that properly then people will engage it because it's not tainted by anything else and with that you hope people will relate and be drawn to it. If I had gone with my gut instinct, I'd probably have made something sad and reflective as this song is for two brothers whose souls are merged and they turn their backs on their duty. In the end I went for something close to the original but just another take on it, which I'm still happy with. I do these remixes because I enjoy them but it also gained me quite a following, over 20,000 subscribers on YouTube as of writing this, so I was happy to keep doing these. But I also feel it's coming to an end now and it's time to focus on more original material, and perhaps get back into some different games to remix.

My take on this was to keep the energy and the epic feeling but do my own twist here and there. The triplets are dropped from the big choir sections, it's fun to hear things in different moods, it's also in a different key. The section before 0:51 has very rapid spiccato but then switches to a focused rhythm that's more driving, more of a heroic vibe about it -- I like that sort of thing. The melody at 1:57, I felt I probably should've used more but instead gave it a bigger moment with choir than in the original. The following section I just made some nice chords with the triplets, I was heavily reminded of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (love that soundtrack!) and did something that reminded me of that. 2:52 is a little cameo from Demon's Souls, made me laugh when I thought about it and how it would segue into the big choir section really well.

That's about it, hopefully in the future I'll remix different things more often! I've always been an underdog person myself, usually going for things that aren't popular...it's nice when something like the Souls games do find their audience.

    Source: Blue pirate's ship

It's a dance rock version of the Blue pirate's ship. THis was a fun game that I enjoyed a lot in the early 2000's, even though the encounter rate was super high. It was fun to explore and find cool hidden places, and the constant battles were made bearable by me doing 5 pushups for every battle. Literally thousands of pushups later, here is the remix!

  4. Some beautiful stuff going on here... paneling for medleyitis concerns but honestly, the transitions seems pretty solid for the most part. 3'11" strikes me as a VERY strange modulation, though. -djp

Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, etc.:

This is my favorite song from Chrono Trigger, and I learned how to play it on piano over 15 years ago, when I was in high school.  I used to play very heated battles of 8-player Tetrinet, and listening to this song would help calm my emotions and help me focus on the game.  Also, my bandmate in Arc Impulse, Andrew Estrada and I met in high school, both with a love for Chrono Trigger's music.  He and I would improvise duets with this piece all the time.

When I heard about Chronicles of Time, I wanted to record an arrangement of this song, but Ivan Hakstok had already done a ballad-style arrangement for the album, and I didn't think it made a lot of sense to have two versions of the same song on the same album that may evoke similar feelings.  (As a result, I arranged a much more upbeat one for Arc impulse to cover.)  So, when I found out that Pixel Mixers (/r/VGCovers) was doing their Chrono Trigger / Cross Tribute Album "Clockwork" (https://www.reddit.com/r/VGCovers/comments/4iqck9/chrono_trigger_cross_album_clockwork_released/), I thought it was the perfect opportunity to record the arrangement of the song that I've been playing for half my life by this point.

Interestingly, I have never been too fond of the second half of "To Far Away Times"... So, I decided to put in my all-time favorite, super-overused 16 bars of video game music ever, the second section of the Chrono Trigger Main Theme.  Something about that section just really pumps me up.

I really don't know what to say about the track, except that I'm happy I was able to finally record a version of To Far Away Times that I'm happy enough with to release to the public.

    Production Notes:
Recorded in three hours over two days, 88-key weighted Yamaha P60 to MIDI, and played back using Native Instruments' The Grandeur VST.  Did some EQ, slapped some Valhalla Room Verb on it, EQ'd that reverb and stuck a multiband compressor on it.  Put on a limiter afterwards.  Not a whole lot really, because I recorded it like a day or two before the deadline.  No MIDI editing, no quantizing... just recording takes until they worked.  REAPER and my pimped out 13" MacBook Pro (Early 2011) are my best friends.

I have always been hesitant to submit to OCR because of the high production standard, and I've spent a lot of my time learning how to do everything that pretty much isn't audio production (playing in a band, practicing piano, arranging music, sequencing, being a computer programmer...) instead.  Also, you guys already have two solo piano arrangements of this song, so I don't know if I'm really contributing anything worthwhile, but I figured I've give it a shot anyway.  I'd like to thank Dwelling of Duels for all their feedback across the various mixes that I've submitted over the past year, being a persistent anti-guitar submitter (I'm a rebel at heart) as it's helped me improve my mixing skills.
  5. This one grew on me - perfect title, and the accelerando/ritardando elements are implemented nicely. -djp

Name of individual songs arranged: Qu’s Marsh

    Composer: Nobuo Uematsu

    Link to the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hNTl1jALcM

    My comments about the mix

    Motivation for this song

Qu’s marsh has left a lasting impression on my younger self. It felt so peaceful and the music gave it a sense of space, as if there was more going on, like a history behind the marsh. I’m often remembered of the song when I’m in nature.

Such was the case last Saturday, when I went out mountain biking. The song popped up in my head, I started humming the theme and eventually, I was “beatboxing” a chillstep drum with a more funky version of the song. When I returned home, I opened Ableton and with the melody fresh in my head, I was able to make the song I was humming.

    The mix itself

I chose the sounds primarily because they sound well together, but I sneaked in some frog-like sounds in there. I listened to some frog noises, and the ‘rolling’ sound a lot of frogs make stood out for me. I tried to recapture this in the bassline, which resembles a slowed-down frog sound. The arpeggiator that follow the lead also reminds me of frogs at times when its tempo is just right. I experimented with actual pond noises and frog calls, but I never got them to work with the rest of the song, so I left them out.

This is actually the first time I’ve created chillstep. At least, that’s what I think it is, not too sure nowadays. I always thought the genre had a very real aliveness to it, mainly because of the contrasting parts. This turned out to be perfect for the Qu’s marsh melody, which features 2 very different parts, and I used that to full effect in the build-ups.

Thank you for taking the time to read and listen to my submission.

    Kind regards,

    Jan De Bruyn

Original Composers:  Robert "Bobby" Prince*, Mick Gordon**

Arranger's notes:  This idea came about as I was playing DOOM 2016 and had noticed that the track playing, BFG Division, was actually a remix of E1M4 (and E2M7, but I didn't really touch that).  So I thought of combining the tempo and time signature (as well as the general build-up) of BFG Division and combining it with chord movements more closely in line with the classic piece and this is what happened.

    *  "Kitchen Ace and Taking Names" was originally a plagarization of "Rise" by Pantera.

**  "BFG Division" is a reinterpretation of "Kitchen Ace and Taking Names" which, as noted above, has it's own history.
  7. Cool concept, but it makes this a bit harder to judge; sounded conservative to me, and the higher-bit sections sound a little fuzzy. -djp

    • about the mix: my purpose in this mix was to show the evolution of the racing games OST, specially the OSTs created by Barry Leitch (Top Gear, Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, Horizon Chase). During the song, the arrangement evolves constantly, blending the older synths with the new ones over time. In the mix ending, I go back to 8 bits then + 16 + 64 + 128 in a few seconds, showing the drastic sound change games had over time.

    Hello all!

Attached here is a remix I did of the Game Corner Theme from Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal, named after Black Oak Casino, which I live close to in California.

I began the remix about a year ago as an original song on my album "Supernature" modeled after the Rocket Game Corner theme. After working on the original song for a couple of months, I decided to scrap it because it didn't fit the sound of the album. Back in December or January, I took the bass and the chords and decided on making a sort of jazz-dance-early 90s remix of Rocket Game Corner, which I completed over the next few weeks.

The arrangement I had to pull off was rather complex, given the source material had at max 5 sounds going at one time, including the white noise percussion. Sampling the source track during the breakdown was also challenging for its own set of reasons, which I wound up using a ROM to split the tracks into individual pieces so I could change things as needed.

Probably most notably, the track was recorded and mixed on tape, then edited on Pro-Tools to "warm it up." It has a different sound than other remixes on OCRemix, and I am proud of it.
  10. Not a style we see a lot of; not a great ending, but some cool stuff going on. -djp

So my name is Peter Locke but my remixer name is UncleBibby... I've submitted 3 songs before but they all got rejected but i think that's good because it forced me to work harder each time and THIS time, i worked harder on the song and paid more attention to detail than any other song i've ever made... It took six drafts to get it right!

my website is www.petermobeter.com, my userid on the ocremix forums is 28302...

The name of the game the song comes from is Street Fighter 2: The World Warriors.

The original song is probably best known as The Zangief Theme or The USSR Stage theme or something like that.

This remix started out as me taking bits of one of my old Zangief remixes i did on Korg DS-10 and putting them into my later Ableton Live Zangief Remix, but then i realized i wanted to spice it up and make it more 80s like this one 80s electro street fighter tribute album i heard. however i didn't really like the zangief tribute on that album so i thought i could do a better one. Then i started mixing and mastering and decided to add a whole bunch of variation to it so that nobody could say it was too repetitive, lol.

Anyways, i hope you like the song, and yes, i made every part of it myself. Thanks for reading.

    Sincerely,

    Peter "UncleBibby" Locke

  13. Dat sidechain though. Not bad, but the heavier-hitting sections might have less source connectivity? - djp

    Hey there!

My name is Ali Popa and I produce music under the name of 'BlueDrak3'.
Not long ago, I finished a remix of a soundtrack from a game I really like called Warframe.
The remix 'The Last Sequence' is made out of two themes used in the game, one being 'This Is What You Are' and the other one being 'Dream', both originally written by Keith Power.
Here is the link to the remix:

The two themes which are in the game have not been officially uploaded on the internet, but they are to be found in this officially uploaded video: https://youtu.be/mqMeHmkr4Xc

I hope you'll enjoy the remix!

    Best Regards,

The next best solution, to address clutter, is to use the messaging system's support for folders - create a couple folders and bulk move messages there.

There's a gear icon next to the "Inbox" header that should let you do this, but let us know if need help!

    Moving topic to help forum.

Has OCR considered hosting sheets itself if provided by the remixer?

@Koriantor Yes.... actually, we've built out a "remix_attachments" table and the requisite functionality, we just need to upload what we've got, incorporate it into the front-end of the site, and do a call for sheet music, MIDI files, etc. from artists.

The same mechanism is also intended to eventually provide lossless FLAC versions, when we're sure we can handle it.

    19 minutes ago, Dhsu said:

Okay, I've fixed the Reuben Kee links. Some central/cloud hosting sounds like a great idea though!

@Dhsu We can & will centralize everything here & host it ourselves, permanently... and we're close to doing so.... what we could use right now is someone willing to gather everything in one place for us so that when we ARE ready to roll, we can pull it all in. Any assistance in this regard is greatly appreciated!

As a plus the samples and their usage reminds me of old school tracker tunes.

Good call, yes... it's not a traditional ambient approach, there are certain sounds used that stick out & some which recall trackers/mods to me, too.

12 hours ago, Uffe von Lauterbach said:

But I thought there was a limit on music duration.

There's no strict limit any more, but there's a practical limit in the sense that the arrangement has to keep developing and also can't just be dozens of tunes thrown together into a mega mix or something like that :)

Would there be any chance of having pages for visual artists who've contributed to OCRA projects?

    y'know... just askin' :<

@Odai Yes. ACTUALLY, we just ALSO added expanded role attribution (director, assistant director, performer, lyrics, AND... artwork) to album pages: http://ocremix.org/album/48/be-aggressive-a-gunstar-heroes-tribute-album

We still have to add artist profiles for those talented individuals who have contributed artwork to OCR projects, but you'll have them, and you'll be credited on album detail pages as well once those links can be established.

@Txai Good suggestions; will implement some of them, not all, but the immediate priority is more updating other pages (game, organization, system, remix) to match this aesthetic a bit more, and get the main site navigation responsive.

  18. e.g. http://ocremix.org/artist/4628/zircon

    • Uses Bootstrap 3
    • More visual layout
    • YouTube playlists!
    • Emphasis on artist links is front and center, including support links for patreon, oc records, etc.
    • Definitely a work-in-progress, but since it was better than what we HAD, we're going live now and will iterate
    • Other pages will be updated to kinda-sorta match, as time allows
    • This pushes us further towards an overall site redesign by getting pages laid out in Bootstrap, semi-responsive, etc. in a piecemeal fashion
    • Feedback welcome

    3. The specs are known now, just go look them up. And every new console has a minority of fanboys bitching about something they haven't seen themselves. This is nothing new, and nothing to worry about.

@The Damned Full specs are known? I don't think so... some vague stuff has been put together, we know it's a "custom Tegra" chip for example, but I haven't see detailed specs. Link?

Might end up being the most bad-ass handheld/portable gaming system ever.... as a console, I really hope that Nintendo considers turning the dock into a discrete GPU that can *eventually* bump things up. If it used TB3, for example, you could see upgrading the dock independent of the tablet as a way for the system to move forward.

Will be loads of fun either way, but I do want to see the full specs, and AFAIK they are not yet known.
