OCR02921 - Super Mario Bros. "The King Awaits"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Okay, yeah, those mallet hits are genius, man. The whole ReMix doesn't come off as overly frantic, but that tense, dark vibe is there in spades, which is perfect for the original castle theme. The SFX were a nice addition, too. The ending really capitalized on the idea of making a picture of finishing Bowser off by getting that axe and dropping the bridge. Really digging this one. -
Happy birthday, Willrock. Hope it's a good one!

OCR02920 - Chrono Trigger "Notes from a Small Island"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yeah, boy! This ReMix skates close to being cluttered and clunky in the middle because of how much was going on, but JJT managed to swoop out and take the ReMix up for air at the last minute, which was nice to hear. Certainly a nice arrangement. My only complaint is the distortion at the intro and outro seemed a little loud or sharp, but once things got underway, it didn't really bug me because it seemed to even out enough. Minor points aside, awesome work, man. -
OCR00109 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time "Gerudo Peeples"
Crulex replied to Jivemaster's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I can hear what everyone is saying about the bass note, and it does get on my nerves as well. But compared to the rest of the ReMix, this seems to be one of the better older mixes in the earliest 100's, so I have to give it and it's creator some credit. Not a horrible mix at all, but there are some things that I would love to see taken out or changed and updated to make it really stand out. -
Happy, has a nice beat from the old school hip-hop percussion that comes and goes. Generally, I like it, but man, way too short and not enough of an arrangement for me. Still, love the old-school beat.
-
Oh yeah, I can hear the clipping in those drums. Not really a fan of how those sound actually, but I dig the beat and even the piano. Lack of humanization doesn't bug me, but it would have been the kind of touch that only helps a ReMix. Another case of where I liked where the arrangement was headed, but the production could use a little touch up.

OCR00100 - Bionic Commando (NES) "ASSAULT"
Crulex replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This does kinda have the spiritual sound of a GBA track, which is nice to hear for an NES classic. It is a little high end with certain sounds, but I guess I'm just not that bothered because I'm used to it from various experiences. Not bad really, but not DJP's best. -
The intro to this was nice, but what really made my ears perk up was that piano and percussion combo starting at about 0:47 which lead straight into the rest of the mix. Cool choice of writing there. Lots of enthusiasm going on throughout the mix, and while there are certain production items that sounded a bit off or just came off as too much, there was really nothing that turned me off to it. Overall, intro was definitely the strongest part, but the whole mix was a nice piece of work. Not bad.

OCR02917 - Getsu Fuuma Den "Dancing Spirits"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Not being familiar with the Getsu sources (even though certain parts sounded familiar because of that Sound Shower thing DJP mentioned, now that I think about and am listening for it), if you had told me that the intro original stuff was ReMixed from a game, I'd have believed it. It had a groove that I could imagine in a game. I liked the arrangement choice here and the style really makes the entire ReMix pop with the energy of a lighter disco, as you described with the whole Turkish Disco thing. Nicely done. -
Grand, tense Hollywood like take Death Mountain, now this is cool. If this was used for a Zelda movie trailer, I'd have loved it. The change at 1:38 was a nice touch and I enjoyed the less booming section near the end as play-off to the rest of the mix. You could really feel the energy in this one. Solid debut.

OCR02915 - Doom II "Opening to Hades"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Man, Mazedude, you seriously know how to make a downright evil ReMix. The SFX were incredibly fitting, the heavy percussion and monstrous organ (which I love to death) and the dark build up, it's all so nightmarish. I've heard of seven minutes in heaven. Now we have eight minutes in hell. Sweet stuff, Mazedude. -
OCR02913 - Super Mario 64 "Perilous Pathway"
Crulex replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Dude, that freaking intro! Grand opening with menacing dubs building up, leading to all hell breaking loose was awesome. The dubstep was done in a way that wasn't grating or abrasive, but instead brought out the power along with the more orchestral parts. And then when you picked the energy up at about 2:20 to give it a little bit more of a DnB style of beat, I really enjoyed that change up. Haven't really heard many songs do that, so that was pretty sweet to hear. Good way to end out the flood, I'd say. -
OCR02912 - Super Mario 64 "The Third Dimension"
Crulex replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Great to hear halc give classic Mario is own brand of touch-up and expansion. I personally liked the use of SFX, especially the fireball noise to help move the beat along. Another wonderful ReMix from halc and a great addition to the album. -
OCR02911 - Super Mario 64 "Hush Hour"
Crulex replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Seems that we can count on Sir J to be apart of some of the most unique and interestingly styled ReMixes around, and this is no exception. Throw in some great mixing chops from G-Mixer and you're on a roll. Love that whistling to death, man. Was the perfect touch for this, like the cherry on top. It does sound like something straight out of a Warner Bros. cartoon, and throwing Mario into it is just too much fun. Cool stuff, guys. -
OCR02910 - Super Mario 64 "Somebody Set Up Us the Bob-omb"
Crulex replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Such glitching fun all around, this is one of the highlights of the album for me. Just love how you manage to go from low-fi to amazing funk and back and forth again. Such a happy, peppy take on the main theme of the game, I like it. One of the best tracks I've heard from ToN so far. -
OCR02909 - Super Mario 64 "Sunken Secrets"
Crulex replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is beautiful, Fishy. You managed to inject some rock into a peaceful and mysteriously calm source like Dire, Dire Docks, and it's everything I could have hoped for in a ReMix of this iconic water theme. Loved the sound of the drums and guitar, and I'm glad you were able to keep it close melodically while adding in some flavor. Damn good job, man. -
Happy Birthday Arrow!

OCR02908 - Super Mario 64 "Grab the Blue Coin!"
Crulex replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Now this is a dance track I can get behind. The amount of variety and changes as the ReMix goes on keeps the energy high and the track fresh. Loving the section around 4:00 onwards myself. Where the N64 expanded on the underground/cave theme, you expanded upon even more. Very nice work, Sole Signal. -
OCR02907 - Super Mario 64 "Through the Flames"
Crulex replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
For two of the easily worlds to get hurt in and had some tense moments, this adventurous orchestral take on Lethal Lava Land sounds great, man, and it has the kind of satisfied vibe I'd expect from successfully accomplishing all the missions within those worlds. I was interested in seeing how this source would be handled ever since I heard of the project, and I'm happy to say that it was well worth the wait. -
Hahaha, oh wow. I have to hand it to anterrior for those incredible vocals! So groovy and full of life, I can totally dig this smooth ReMix. Hell of a beat as well. Wonderful arrangement and production values all around, so hats off to Timaeus222 and Chimpazilla as well. Going to be rollin' to this ReMix for a long time now.

OCR01252 - Super Mario 64 "The Alternate Route"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
One of the few ReMixes I heard elsewhere before I heard it on OCR. This is definitely the kind of high-energy Drum and Bass track that is perfect for background music or just to have playing while something is going on. It may not be the best, most expansive track around, but it does it's job, I think. Not bad. -
There are some interesting choices, like the intro, that make the song your own, which is cool. Obvious age issues aside, though, it did feel like half a mix and was a bit short. Once the long intro got out of the way, things started to pick up a bit and then it went back to the intro for the ending and just stopped. I hear the foundation of where it could have went, but that's it. Not one of my favorites from AmIEvil.

Nice, chill, hip-hoppish ReMix of Hyrule Castle, sweet. Almost makes me think of a couple of hyrule solders just cruising down a street in a top-down with bandanas on their heads with this in the background, which is funny enough. Po is the master of chill grooves, and I have to say that I liked this mix.
