Toadofsky Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I haven't really been posting much on here lately, but I was a bit curious, where do some of you go for video game news? I guess this is kind of an odd topic, but I just don't like going to Kotaku or Destructoid, and having to see stupid "hardcore" blogs/opinion pieces all the time. Sure sometimes they may have something interesting or funny, but I'd rather look at some better sites than them. IGN, is okay, but I'm not that enthralled with their ad pages. So, where do YOU guys go for video game news? Quote
Skummel Maske Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I just use Kotaku. All news seem to come through there, so it does the job for me. Quote
LuketheXjesse Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Whatever VG magazine is on the magazine rack at wal-mart. Quote
RedFusion Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/ Ever since I saw that their tagline was "PC Gaming Since 1873", I've been visiting that site almost daily ever since. They update quite often and I've found quite a few interesting games I never otherwise would have discovered, such as Naumachia. Before that I used to switch between gametrailers and gamespot, simply because of lack of better alternatives. Gamespot barely has much news though anyway. Quote
Malaki-LEGEND.sys Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I hit 1up myself. I like their features and podcasts. Parish finally got an RPG podcast going just recently in fact, so I'm quite happy. Quote
lazygecko Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Neogaf has been my primary source for a lot of years. Quote
Tables Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Either Game Informer, or I don't really go to any one place online, but if a topic pops up in the message boards I frequent (here, facepunch, etc) then that's how I find stuff out. Quote
AJ-enova Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I check Gametrailers and IGN everyday. Between them you'll probably hear about everything there is to know... Quote
Gollgagh Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 internet word-of-mouth but I'm the kind of guy that's still completing his PS2 collection I only have 13 PS3 games yet, but my PS2 collection is approaching a hundred, I think Quote
Schwaltzvald Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 eh semi-off-topic I'm the kind of guy that's still completing his PS2 collectionI only have 13 PS3 games yet, but my PS2 collection is approaching a hundred, I think What are covered on your PS2 Collection, genre wise I mean? Quote
Triad Orion Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I tend to use Gamespot, 1-up, and Kotaku the most regularly. Generally, Kotaku is probably the most useful. Quote
Gollgagh Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 What are covered on your PS2 Collection, genre wise I mean? Mostly RPG's (Final Fantasy, SaGa, Xenosaga) and action games (Ace Combat, MGS, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter) with a few fighting games (Soul Calibur, Tekken). no shmups, unfortunately. this is one PS2 genre that I don't know what's out there besides Gradius or R-Types I also (stereotypically) hate sports games except for THPS 3 and 4 and Gran Turismo 3 and 4 Quote
Bahamut Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Word of mouth for me. I don't care for game hype, so if I'm desperate for finding game info after its released that word of mouth doesn't give me enough for, I just go to GameRankings. I also don't like to generally read game related articles by gaming sites because of the sometimes piss poor journalism in the industry (Kotaku I'm looking at you). Quote
EdgeCrusher Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Normally I just see what everyone is talking about on IRC. Quote
Thin Crust Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 But you know what? Gametrailers just started putting nonskippable ads before their videos. I might have to find a new gaming source. How about say, OCR? Quote
friendlyHunter Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I was just about to say... OCR is the only site I go to for video game news. Well, excluding StarCraft II fansites. Except they don't have news anymore because Blizzard stopped releasing any relevant information about the game. Quote
The Mutericator Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I use Joystiq and Kotaku, myself. There's some overlap, of course, but since I use Google Reader I can just take ten minutes to blaze through all of the recent news once a day. Quote
Neo Samus Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Neogaf has been my primary source for a lot of years. This right here. Quote
Necrotic Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 1up.com, because it has journalists I can tolerate for once and occassionally NeoGAF Quote
Toadofsky Posted October 18, 2009 Author Posted October 18, 2009 Word of mouth for me. Kotaku gets too much into the "hardcore" gamer mentality, that I'm sick of hearing. And their polls they have "provide" absolutely nothing to me. I like to see game footage on Game Trailers, but Bonus Round is a joke to me. Michael Pachter's predictions, and his analyzing is getting ridiculous. I like Gamebiz from what I've seen of few and far between articles... Quote
Dyne Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 ThaSauce, Kotaku, Destructoid, 1UP.com, IGN (when desperate, and never before), OCR Forums, and magazines. Quote
Guy In Rubber Suit Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 I check GamesIndustry.biz, Gamasutra, Gamepolitics, 1up, Crispy Gamer and Kotaku. However I like Kotaku the least because of the way they try to inject personality into what are supposed to be news stories. Leave that to articles and features. Quote
Strike911 Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Kotaku's headlines are pretty good when it comes to breaking news and elaborating on it. I like it for that reason. That said, I could do without a lot of their "articles." Hell, whenever I read a title to a article like "XBOX360 vs. PS3 GRAPHIC COMPARISON: YOUR THOUGHTS?" I know it's going to be swarming with annoying fanboys, and a lot of time they tend to try and create buzz with articles like that. The site's comment section is absolutely annoying and should be avoided. Just too many dorks trying to one-up each other in larger quantity than other sites on the internet. No one is really useful, and everyone's comments usually some attempt at a clever retort. I hate that side of the internet. Seriously, why all the negativity? /veering off topic Still like their news though. And they get things quickly. You can sit on their site refreshing it and they'll have news coming in regularly throughout the day which I like. Quote
