  1. OC ReMix presents Heart of a Gamer: A Tribute to Satoru Iwata December 6, 2015 Contact: press@ocremix.org FAIRFAX, VA..."On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." -- Satoru Iwata (1959-2015) On what would have been Satoru Iwata's 56th birthday, OverClocked ReMix pays tribute to the late game developer and president & CEO of Nintendo with the community's latest album, Heart of a Gamer: A Tribute to Satoru Iwata. Iwata was a gigantic figure in the world of video games whose loss was felt throughout the gaming community and around the world on July 11th of this year. Heart of a Gamer features six tracks from eight artists arranging themes from eight soundtracks of games developed or contributed to by Satoru Iwata, a man whose life work was making the world a better & brighter place through video games. Organized by director Gerry "The Damned" Wheatley, and featuring artwork of Iwata surrounded by characters of games he worked on by Davy "Odai" Owen, Heart of a Gamer is available for free download at http://ocremix.org/info/Heart_of_a_Gamer:_A_Tribute_to_Satoru_Iwata. This album was produced to help promote video game music, was made by fans, for fans, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo or HAL Laboratory; all original compositions, characters, and logos are copyright their respective owners. The album's selection of games from Satoru Iwata's career includes: Super Smash Bros. Melee & Brawl Kirby's Adventure Rollerball Nintendo Land & Balloon Fight EarthBound; and Pokémon Gold Version. "Whether in front of a computer monitor or a boardroom of investors, Iwata's love of games were what came first," observed director Gerry Wheatley. "His devotion to his company was never truer when, in financial trouble, he took a pay cut to make sure his employees were safe. When his colleagues were in need, he lent his time and skill to save their games. He wasn't just another name in the credits. He was truly part of the team." Heart of a Gamer marks Gerry Wheatley's second directorial effort for OC ReMix. His first directed album in 2011, Pokémon: The Missingno Tracks, also honored a game franchise critically influenced and assisted by Satoru Iwata. About OverClocked ReMix Founded in 1999, OverClocked ReMix is an organization dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of video game music as an art form. 4. The nuance is that he doesn't believe that belief has anything to do with it, and that a person's actions are inseparable from their character or that there is any belief beyond what is in accordance with a person's actions. Maybe? I don't know. Like you said, he's kind of just going to two directions at once. His crappy post writing doesn't help either. The entire point of my side here is that belief has everything to do with it, and more effectively than policing sexist actions is stopping the motivation for sexist actions by passively correcting beliefs of people in society over long periods of time (you know like how we've dealt with every other civil rights issue). In other words, make sexist actions stop by raising kids to be less sexist as they grow up (shit, all the preventative rape culture stuff I was shoveled in high school actually did contribute to why I'm informed about ongoing conversations about consent and sexism in the first place. More schools should have that.). Showing businesses that sex doesn't sell anymore. Maybe even possibly persuading currently sexist people to be less sexist, but it's harder to change a person's mind than it is to raise a small person or take away money. Hell, if you fix the market, and fix the kids, society's in good shape already, and that's not counting the other solutions you can come up with when not idea-blasting them on a game music forum. I'm not sure why this is rocket science, but the gist is he doesn't agree because he doesn't think sexism has anything to do with how the person is raised, what they think, or what they believe; it's only sexism when it is manifested as some action or some kind of observable oppression. And when it is, it can be viewed without context and it is ultimately sexist, even when the brain isn't actually behind it. The same kind of logic, of course, does not work at all when applied to mental health issues. If a person keeps quiet about their depression, does that make them not have depression? If they have homicidal thoughts but don't act on them, are they not homicidal, and do they not need mental health care? How far do you extend pervert the definition of "action" before you end up just taking into account all of a person's psychological factors anyway? Then you're just back at square one, and I say those psychological "actions" are the ones that cascade into "real ones" and those former are what we should focus on. I'm not really interested in further asserting this point, since it's been clarified a bit ago that claims of Anita's censorship talk has been unfounded. And so I don't actually really particularly care about her in this instance anyway, I'm just responding to supposed counterpoints despite that it's irrelevant to the thread at this point.

In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." Whether in front of a computer monitor or a boardroom of investors, Iwata's love of games were what came first. His "Ask Iwata" series combed through the histories of Nintendo games, old and new. His humor in the Nintendo Direct videos showed a side we hardly see from company presidents. His devotion to his company was never truer when, in financial trouble, he took a pay cut to make sure his employees were safe. When his colleagues were in need, he lent his time and skill to save their games. Why would he do all these things? "In my heart, I am a gamer." - Gerry Wheatley (The Damned)

  6. Compo: MnP (Meat 'n Potatoes) Round 46: Age of Empires II "Shamburger" Midi: https://www.mediafire.com/?buqgrrro12vr69v Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRcmMl2aB30 Deadline: Dec 19th Saturday 1PM Vote Ends: Dec 21st Tues midnight Submit your remix Here when completed. **If you have technical difficulty with account activation at ThaSauce, please contact me via PM and I will submit your track and will also tally your vote** MISSION STATEMENT The goal of Compo:MnP is to promote that "meat and potatoes" conservative approach to remixing: this includes the mood and composition of source tunes. It is up to the remixer to create their own personalization, or to simply give it a sound upgrade. Moreover, the compo is a great opportunity to hone your remixing skills and give video game music the respect that is due. SOME reinterpretation is recommended, but not required. MnP Instructions/Guidelines 1. Covers and Sound Upgrades are permitted. 2. Most or all of the source notes must be present (but not necessarily in the exact same order), secondly the mood (energy, pacing, feelings being conveyed etc) should also be retained. For example, a source tune that is fast-paced and energetic that's remixed into a mellow/chill-out theme would be a hard sell. 3. If you decide to do a genre swap (i.e. symphonic to techno), make sure that the conditions of #2 are met. 4. Submissions must be at a maximum of 20mb (keeping in step with ThaSauce's file size max). 5. Only 1 entry per participant. Previous winner cannot participate but can submit a BONUS entry. 6. All competitors and voters must adhere to the rules stated within: Competition Code and Conduct MISC/TIPS - When picking a source tune, make sure it has a MIDI to make ppl's lives easier. - In-game sound FX are permitted, so long as they don't comprise the whole track (i.e. replacing entire MIDI tracks with just sfx)

  7. Aww man, I thought you gentlemen weren't gonna argue about the battle system! If you want ATB couldn't you just play the original like I am doing on PS4 now? It comes with an awesome FF7 Remake Theme that plays Aeris's Theme on Piano.

  8. Oops, I did it again. I'm really good at necroing this thread I suppose. I wouldn't be doing it without a good reason, I promise! So I realized that I said I had all of the MIDIs tagged and all... but I never uploaded them here. As they say in the old country: "Uh, durr." Here are all of the songs from the games, including the one-off sound effects and fanfares. I have NOT tagged the sound effects and fanfares, but if anyone has a mighty need for one of them I suppose I could find it for you. The way they're tagged is disk 1 and 2 are from the first game, and 3 and 4 are from the second (with a few minor exceptions). If you have the program Foobar2000, you can use the soundfont that I included in the dump to play the songs in HQ with the instruments from the games! It still has the bad synths, but I'm sure you can manage (I can't fix that either, so I'm sorry). Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nqwyxglqo3lq75q/AAC3-mqe1l8ndKflW4Yj7RIca?dl=0 I hope we can finish this album, too...

  9. This song truly makes you feel as if you're ready to embark on a new adventure, filled with hope and excitement for what the coming days/months/years will bring you. The use of the multiple guitars and singing makes the track have a very uplifting, sentimental mood. Beautiful stuff <3

  10. This is my favorite track on the album. It elevates the original melody in such a way that its repetition becomes not only anticipated, but welcome. Even though the way the electric lead guitar crackles by the mic may sound unintentional, I think it actually works.

  11. I feel like this was a little rushed because of the short time we had to do it, but I really am glad this mini-album turned out so well. I again want to thank the remixers, Sbeast, k-wix, Brandon, timaeus222, PokerusVGM and Chernabogue, Tuberz McGee and Kroasta for their work (and their ability to put up with my random pushes to get this album done. Another thanks goes to Odai, our album artist and the man that came up with the title. Themysteriousassassin gets a thank you as well, for backing me up and pushing the project a few times when I wasn't there to do it myself. And finally to Liontamer for not only giving the go ahead for such a quick project, but also his support getting it out in time. I hope everyone enjoys this album. Satoru Iwata had a big impact on the industry, and even though this is just a small sample of the games he was involved in, I really do feel it shows how much we loved his work. OH MY GOD! We're up on VGMDB! http://vgmdb.net/album/55982 Yay us!

  12. Ah, I can really appreciate a song that can make me tear up. You can really feel every ounce of emotion that was put into this song; the buildup to the payoff towards the end with the vocals and the electric guitar especially sell the whole "ballad" feel. Great mix!

  13. Nope. Couple years later, and it's still awesome.

  14. I probably should've picked something more wintery/christmasy or something, honestly forgot this was a two week compo because I procrastinate and never actually use that time. This kind of just coincided timewise with finally getting around to transcribing shamburger, I've been meaning to do it for years since it isn't on vgmusic

  15. No you're straw manning. i said nothing about his bigness or relative bigocity. I was only talking about proportionality.

  16. @Bleck: All you're correct on is that observable actions are the only things we have to go on to judge a person; that's far from actually making the case that those observations are absolute and sufficient to make accurate evaluations. It's one thing if you say "actions are the best thing we have to judge someone as correctly as we can because other factors in a person's character are unverifiable and subjective", but instead you're framing it as "actions are the only things we need to make a correct evaluation because there are no other factors in a person's character".

  17. Easily the biggest influence for this track was Dirty Loops. Also, Japanese Fusion bands like T-Square and Casiopea, and other Fusion artists like Alex Argento, Marco Sfogli, Guthrie Govan, The Aristocrats, etc.

  18. It's nice to hear one of my favorite tracks from P2 in such a new way! Fast-paced and energetic EDM is my favorite in the genre, and I especially enjoy the blips in the background. I think you did really well with a melody that wasn't too prevalent in the original; it doesn't get boring throughout the entire run. In this regard I think the shorter length actually helps you. Great job!

  20. Wow is this a fun track!! I really, really enjoy the beat and progression here - it's unique, it's fun and I never knew what was coming next. But even better, this isn't just a bunch of haphazard sections; the whole song flows wonderfully as a cohesive unit, and the feel and musical choices are infectious. Bonus props for making a wind-down ending fit perfectly into the larger song. A great, unique listen and way more enjoyable than I could have guessed!! Please, more like this!!

  21. Sounds pretty good for a first remix, production sounds good too i think. Yeah, it is pretty repetitive and i think adding some rapping/lyrics would probably make it more interesting. Maybe you can find a rapper here on OCR? The synth strings sound nice but i feel at 2:24 they are a bit too slow for the faster chord changes, it sounds like they are always a bit behind the beat. The piano at 3:23 sounds a bit too mechanical for my tastes, like all notes have the same velocity. My preferred method is always to play in the piano parts live, you can still edit/quantize it afterwards. But of course you can also change the velocities and note lenghts manually in the piano roll of your DAW. Hope this was a little bit useful and take my feedback with a grain of salt since electronic music is not really my speciality

  22. New review: I'm a bit biased here, since I co-directed Legacy ^^ The blend of chiptune, clean guitars, and fuzzy additions (percussions, synths) really work here. The overall mix is maybe a little too much high-pitched (the bass is a little too buried under fuzzier instruments), but it is far from being a problem. There's an industrial feeling I get when I listen to this one -- fits the caped crusader.

  23. Is that a serious thing that you'll come to someone's house in a dog costume and play music from Animal Crossing? Cause if it's not true I'll see you in court

  24. Now this is cool, low-fi and brooding with some beats that give this some jump. Really like that guitar use with the bits, it's a good combo. Nice work, guys.
