  1. That's fine. Good luck to all the participants this round, I'm looking forward to listening to the songs! On a second note I will be doing the stream today anyways. I know we have some veterans in this compo but maybe some of the newer guys would be interested in watching. I'll be working on a new track but I will be answering production questions mostly. Well that is, the little I know about production. But what little I know I would like to share it, so tune in if you want!. If that's ok with you I will post an update when the stream goes up in an hour or two.

  2. I've also been testing out some streaming methods (twitch, mixlr) while working on an album remix, I can post the info here if anyone's interested. I usually remix at night (central time).

Anyone who needs a good 80s music fix should check out the youtube channel NewRetroWave, also, check out Lazerhawk's album Shark and Bone. Also, that Simpsons intro is probably the best I've ever seen along with the Rick and Morty one.

The 80s, man just when I saw "Miami" I laughed. That was it. Gi Joe & Cobras, He-man, cheesy ninja movies, Ninja Gaiden and the NES, Van Dame, Akira, pink neons, synths, VHS cassettes and all the cheesy quotes from movies. And so many other things, from that era, the era where you had to replace a battery in your Zelda cardrige if it didn't save anymore and the SNES was a thing of the future. I was born in 84, so it's a vague nostalgia for me, like a old dream. It's probably even more funny for someone born in the late 70s.

Com'on the most of the 80's had a fun style and a distinct vibe...a lot in the 90's was so drab and depressing ( flannel, grunge, gangsta rap, Blossom) until like 97, then things got more playful and enjoyable.

    David Bowie dead at 69

That quote is a tweet that originated on Twitter. Here's the original tweet (also we have Twitter embedding? since when?) This hit me quite hard, so I'd like to share a picture by Yoshitaka Amano (longtime Final Fantasy character artist and logo artist) that is the most David Bowie picture to ever David Bowie.

  22. I agree with what's been said, but honestly, it doesn't really sound like "80s rock" at all. I'm quite familiar with said genre so maybe I can provide at least one point of useful advice. - A defining feature of a lot of 80s music, is gated reverb on the drums. Basically, you run the toms and snare through a HUGE reverb, but use a noise gate or similar device to chop off the sound of the reverb just enough so that it doesn't sound messy. Also, see if you can get a hold of some retro drum machine samples. There is a soundfont out there called "ultimate drums", the "power kit" contained within sounds quite 80s. - Saws - Heavily reverbed chords played by a synth with two detuned saw waves is common. Kinda like what you hear in Van Halen's "Jump" - Electric guitars with lots of delay and chorus - Roland Juno-60 was extremely popular for basslines and the Juno-106 had arguably the quintessential synth brass sound of the 80s. Your bass isn't too far off, though. See if you can emulate or find an emulation of those synths. - Synth bells...synth bells everywhere. Maybe use those in place of the marimba? A recent VGM track that totally nails it, is this That is so fucking 80s, l grew a mullet just listening to it. I think if you follow the others advice and apply some of the concepts like what you hear in this tune to what you already have, you'll be sounding straight out of the "golden age of pornogra-err...music, in no time!
