  1. Groundhog Day is a huge Holiday at the Strader households! I would like to wish you all a great Groundhog Day, later we can discuss the outcome of the Groundhog's forecast and in the coming weeks, see how accurate it was. The news is already forecasting more snow for this area, so I can see the Groundhog potentially going in that area as well. We'll see!

  2. Compo: MnP (Meat 'n Potatoes) Round 49: Super Metroid - Green Brinstar Midi: http://compo.thasauce.net/files/materials/MnP49_Green_Brinstar.mid Youtube: "Changed my mind, figured that if I wait too, too long MnP won't make a come-back from last round. Hopefully some people will find time in betwixt PRC and the Castlevania Cacophony Compo to do something for round 49." -HoboKa Deadline: Feb 17th Wed 1PM Vote Ends: Feb 19th Friday 11 PM Submit your remix Here when completed. **If you have technical difficulty with account activation at ThaSauce, please contact me via PM and I will submit your track and will also tally your vote** MISSION STATEMENT The goal of Compo:MnP is to promote that "meat and potatoes" conservative approach to remixing: this includes the mood and composition of source tunes. It is up to the remixer to create their own personalization, or to simply give it a sound upgrade. Moreover, the compo is a great opportunity to hone your remixing skills and give video game music the respect that is due. SOME reinterpretation is recommended, but not required. MnP Instructions/Guidelines 1. Covers and Sound Upgrades are permitted. 2. Most or all of the source notes must be present (but not necessarily in the exact same order), secondly the mood (energy, pacing, feelings being conveyed etc) should also be retained. For example, a source tune that is fast-paced and energetic that's remixed into a mellow/chill-out theme would be a hard sell. 3. If you decide to do a genre swap (i.e. symphonic to techno), make sure that the conditions of #2 are met. 4. Submissions must be at a maximum of 20mb (keeping in step with ThaSauce's file size max). 5. Only 1 entry per participant. Previous winner cannot participate but can submit a BONUS entry. 6. All competitors and voters must adhere to the rules stated within: Competition Code and Conduct MISC/TIPS - When picking a source tune, make sure it has a MIDI to make ppl's lives easier. - In-game sound FX are permitted, so long as they don't comprise the whole track (i.e. replacing entire MIDI tracks with just sfx)

  8. One of our groundhogs for the west passed away just before Groundhog Day A sad occasion indeed. But nevertheless, our groundhog team across the country pressed on.

  10. HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY As I understand it, Phil predicts an early Spring. It certainly feels that way here in NJ. Also, for anyone who is also a fan of the movie Groundhog Day, I'd like to recommend listening to I Was There Too: Groundhog Day with Stephen Tobolowsky. I Was There Too is a great podcast by improv comedian and film buff Matt Gourley, where he interviews people who had small parts in big movies. Stephen Tobolowsky has some fantastic stories about when he worked on the movie and what he did with his character, Ned Ryerson. Highly recommended!

  11. This is just soooo good!!! I already knew it from their youtube channel, and I was already half expecting it to arrive here as well, but it nevertheless still completely blew my mind. In my humble opinion it's their best piece yet.

  13. A bit of a tough one for me here. As far as arrangement goes, I can hear and appreciate the additional elements you've brought to the table compared to the original track, which must have been challenging considering the original is almost as minimal as it gets. With regards to your synth tones - I did find some of the sounds you created a little conflicting to me tempo wise as the rate in which they were panning/droning felt out of sync to the overall tempo. This is ok to do, but when you have a track like this with such minimal percussion to keep that beat, your song then pretty much relies upon your synths to keep that tempo, and because that tempo isn't being kept, things feel a little off the grid. Your sound design overall is quite nice and I enjoy the tones you have constructed on that level. You did begin to verge a bit on too many simultaneous elements, with parts like the drones beginning to step on other parts, but I felt it didn't hit breaking point. I certainly wouldn't have added more though. I did like the evolution of your sounds, but I personally felt it took a long time for them to evolve into something, and it didn't help that the overall song was too reliant on this technique. I think I'm with the others on this one, in the sense that we have a mix of good ideas here that while slowly evolving, do not quite lead anywhere. I can't think of any advice on how to achieve a more evolving progression with this, considering you have such little source material to work with, and the more extra stuff you add the less it'd feel like the original. Overall though, with the above crits, I feel this is still a NO

    Bugdom - Night Theme

First thoughts: The original has percs, but it seems your piano work is intended to be more subtle and human. If you are going for a more emotional performance, perhaps take the percs out all together and pursue the piano/strings (maybe a piano quintet even?) concept more. As far as the key change goes, you could toy around with modal changes, relative minor/dominant key changes, arpeggios of the melody, octave shifts, counterpoint harmonies, or even smooth time signature shifts, to name a few. As long as your deviation returns to the melody in a comprehensible way, you can do all sorts of crazy fun stuff. It will move more away from a cover and toward a remix if you keep developing a more personalized and original piano performance. You can get more liberal with the melody, and as long as you stay in key, can create a new melodic lead without losing the character of the original.

  16. Usually I'm the one who decides on the source tune when I collaborate with people. I kinda want to mix it up and let the other person do the deciding lol. Uhh...so long as the source has a MIDI, I cannot transpose by ear =p
