OCR00373 - Stormlord "Eleven Tears"
DragonAvenger replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The 2003 mix is quite a bit better than the mix on the site. The sounds are overall such an improvement that is much easier to listen to than the original. Wish the timpani was a bit louder though. Plenty of melodies, and the variations and background textures are pretty nice to hear together. I'm a sucker for 'epic' sounding mixes, so this one fits right in my alley, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Go get the newer version if you plan on listening. -
OCR01937 - Mega Man 3 "Ravaging Reptile"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very catchy and fun to listen to. The attention to detail really brings this to life, and this is something I'll be jamming to for a while. I love when chip stuff can sound this awesome. -
This is a little gem that more people should be picking up (and reviewing on!). The sounds are all around fantastic, and as OA mentioned the space each instrument has is very well defined and respected. Nothing's stepping on toes here, and that is a good thing. Very groovy. Great fun, and worth keeping.

OCR00479 - Dragon Warrior "Dragon Hop"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I've always liked this one. It's not the most creative or interpretive of the source, but it has it's own feel and it's a nice chill listen. I'm actually listening for the first time on headphones, and there is some almost dizzying panning at times that I'm not crazy about. It's all good on speakers though. The ending is pretty abrupt, it would have nice to have had something that doesn't just stop so suddenly. Fun little listen. -
OCR00451 - Silent Hill 2 & 1 "Static Aversion"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The idea of using the static/searching for signal sounds for this game isn't the most unique, but it has it's effect and makes a creative track. Having the static come back in every so often was a nice touch, but I found it annoying a couple of time when I'd rather focus on the music than the static. I'm a little put off that it felt like the track took 3 minutes to get really started, and by then was nearing the halfway mark, but when this does get started it's pretty good. Not what I would have expected from CotMM, but it's always interesting to hear mixer's earlier works. The melodies felt a little soft compared to the volume of the static in between sections, I would have liked that to come up a little in relation, or have the static brought down a tad. Other than that, it's a fun and interesting listen. -
OCR00519 - Final Fantasy IX "Alexandrian Nightmare"
DragonAvenger replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The alarm makes sense in it's own right, but after a while it can become grating. Agreeing with others that the melody comes in in a different key, kinda throwing things off. Overall, the sounds aren't really pleasing. Gonna have to pass on this one, sorry. -
This...just doesn't gel with me. I agree with OA that the lead sounds up to the mallets are just grating at times. I would have liked this a lot more if the leads had been played in the mallets rather than the accordion. Overall I'm feeling that this is just a bit too hokey (yes, I went to the 'other' overused kids party song). It's creative in it's own right, but I never liked the source, and this unfortunately accents all the parts that I didn't like about it. Just not my thing, sorry.

OCR00420 - Metal Gear "First Impressions"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very sneaky mix. While the excitement level never gets very high, the tension is always there, which holds interest. Sounds remain pretty decent after time, although it is showing it's age. Fun mix to have in the background, and a nice listen. -
OCR00417 - Command & Conquer "On the Prowl Redux"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very chill in it's own right. The bass is what really brings this together. I also want to give props for the background synth that works pretty nicely. Someone mentioned that this doesn't really have a climax, which lends itself to sneaking around and subtly kicking ass. Nice work, though it works as a background track more than anything else. -
OCR00238 - Dragon Seeds "New Age"
DragonAvenger replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Overall, this isn't holding my interest. It's pretty quiet, with not much sticking out to grab my attention. Timing also feels off in a few sections, although it's not by much. Not for me, in the end. Also, I'm being harsh because the mixer has made it ok in his post earlier. -
Happy birthday to the guy who's been hard at work judging a crapload of tracks. Don't think you're work's been going unnoticed!

OCR00228 - Chrono Trigger "Blue-Minded God"
DragonAvenger replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Minimalistic, a little bit of almost jazz going on, and Magus. It's not my favorite mix of the theme, but it has it's own charms in the right light. The organ sound doesn't really hold up these days, but the rest of the sounds aren't too bad. I like the piano line throughout the mix, it's a nice touch. Give it a try, you might like it. -
OCR01936 - Aquaria "Minibadass"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Definitely agreeing that this track could easily stand on it's own, not being familiar with the source. I like the chip-electronica feel overall, it works very well with the melody lines throughout. Another good thing is that the track really is just the right length. Lately it feels like so many people are working to push tracks to their limit, when it would be better to let the track take it's own space and leave it at that. Last agreeance with above posts, but the fade-out really works here. Overall I feel like the volume levels are a little off. I wish the main lines had been brought up a little more, right now they're competing a little too much with the bass for the spotlight, when the bass should be in a more supportive role here. I would be rocking that much more if so. Overall, great track, certainly worth a listen even if you don't know the game exists (like me). -
OCR00226 - Seiken Densetsu 3 "Electric Fields"
DragonAvenger replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Certainly not meant as a melodically heavy mix, this has some pretty cool stuff going on subtly. Sounds aren't so great today, but I like how things are balanced through most of the mix. The bass line pulsates in a pretty cool way, which is one of my favorite parts of the mix. I like the idea of the choir, but it's very muddy and hard to distinguish at times. Would have liked to hear that clearer overall. The piano line that starts at 3:40 is very interesting to listen, and I like how it transitions to background when the guitar comes in. I would have liked to hear some creative stuff like that earlier, and throughout the mix. Nice work, an enjoyable listen. -
I'm impressed by the guitar playing throughout the track. Not only does it shred quite well, but the tone works just right in the mix. The harp usage was also a nice subtle touch that I wouldn't have imagined working as well as it did, great job. Overall this entire song has a good exciting feel to it that makes it pretty enjoyable to listen to. I do have to agree with everyone on the orchestral hits, they seem very out of place in the track, and really is somewhat of a letdown as the ending. Doesn't kill the mix, but not the best of choices either. Other than that, great stuff!

OCR01934 - Street Fighter II "The Masked Man"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm going to be a little bit of a downer on this and say this didn't really click with me as much as it seems to be with everyone else. However, I think there are some outside reasons to it. 1 - I was never into fighter games, and therefore am unfamiliar with the source. 2 - I played trumpet for years, so hearing it like this, despite that it works for this specific mix, is hurting my (not very present anymore) trumpet pride. 3 - I'm hungry. BUT - I do like this! I just am not as wowed as I'd like to be. Some pretty awesome stuff that is going on is the fact that Justin is really expanding his groove to new levels, and I can bet that in not too many mixes he will be rocking this out very well. Secondly, as usual, Justin really knows how to fill the entire soundfield well, and it really helps this mix have that epic feel that people are commenting on. Keep them coming, Justin! -
OCR01932 - Tales of Symphonia "Pixelated Tales"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oh so bubbly, I'm liking this. You can hear the amount of detail that was put into this, and the result is all the better for it. I love that the song even sounds like a bunch of pixels, and it's not easy to achieve an almost visual out of a piece of music. Ending doesn't suit my tastes, but Showroom Dummy has his reasons for it, so I won't fault his creative choice. Nice work. -
OCR00354 - Final Fantasy IV "Surface of the Moon"
DragonAvenger replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I've always liked this track because of how it conveys the mood of the original. There isn't much arranging to the source melodies, but that isn't the point of the track. It sets out to really bring forth the emotion of the original, and it does that very well. I'll chime in on the thought that this could fit into the Super Metroid abandoned ship with ease. The empty feeling this provides, especially supported by the 'intercom' coming up with static, really gives you a feel like theres nothing out there. At least you hope... -
Do you play as a male or female in a game, given a choice?
DragonAvenger replied to OverCoat's topic in General Discussion
I've done my fair share of both, actually. Since most heroes (moreso in older games than now, though still a majority) are male, I tend to lean that way, even in the MMOs I've played, but I tend to pick whatever suits my fancy at the time. Sometimes it's based on who looks better, too. If all the males look dumb, I'll go female, or vice versa. -
OCR01933 - Super Metroid "Berinstar"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like very much the chill vibe that's going throughout the mix. Even the faster movement in the middle can't shake that feeling, great job on that. The textures are quite nice as well. DJP said it right that the contrasts really bring this together, along with the live playing. My favorite section is right around 1:30 or so. That is where I feel like the style really comes out just right. Nice work on this. -

Interesting watch as usual, and always cleverly cute. Nicely done. -
OCR00224 - Super Mario RPG "Mushroom Way Madness"
DragonAvenger replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a cute little mix that's a lot of fun to listen to. The sounds certainly aren't great, but I can get past that with few problems. Overall I feel like I'm being overpowered by the guitar a bit, wish it were a little softer. Cute, fun, enjoyable overall. -
OCR00085 - Herzog Zwei "Breach"
DragonAvenger replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I know this is old, but dear god the drums are killing me. I really can't get past how awful they sound. Phew. Now that that's out of my system, I can take a look at the rest of the mix. Fairly busy in terms of sound throughout, the theme has a very epic feel that is carried by the background. It feels like all the melodies and counter melodies could be a little clearer and possibly a little louder. Aside from that, this has it's own charms, though I can't bring myself to keep it. Nice work, but a pass from me. -
An interesting, and pretty cool, interpretation of the source tune. I like that throughout the mix there is very little time you aren't where you can't find some portion of the original floating around, yet this still sounds like it's own stand-alone piece. I feel like the weakest moment is when the cello first comes in. Just a little more volume/confidence could have made that section much tighter overall. After that the mix settles in nicely and I have few complaints. Creative work, I'll be looking for more from these guys.

OCR01930 - Final Fantasy IV "The Still Land"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Despite the complaints presented in the judges evaluation, I think tht the track is doing what it sets out to do. It adds a new flavor onto the original source, while retaining most of the original emotion. The track achieves what it sets out to do. I don' think you can ask more of it. It's got some pretty moments which I definately enjoy. Nice work.
