I've always really enjoyed this mix with the wonderfully creepy feel it has. It stands out as one of my favorite SMB mixes on this site. I do wish that it was expanded, both in length and instrumentation, but even as it is I think it is a solid piece of work that I can listen to and enjoy. Even after the time since release the samples are still pretty good, it's defiantely withstood the test of time. Nice work.

OCR00600 - Combatribes "74 Floors"

I like this. It's relaxing, oddly enough, and I enjoyed closing my eyes to this. Drums come in a bit weak, I would have liked more presence in them. Overall, the sounds can get a little strange, but it all fix the mix, so while they might be not the most pleasant to listen to, they add up to a cohesive whole. Nice job. -

Standard mix fare. Nothing really sticks out aside from the pizz. at the end. I don't know the source, so the mix is overall just kind of lost on me. Sorry. -
OCR01336 - Secret of Mana "NightTime Evolution"

This is Brandon's first ReMix? Definately a good start. I can hear his style throughout. Very slick, and a great choice of instruments. Percussion fits very well, I like the dryness of them, as well as the variation Harmony adds to keep them fresh. Guitar work is smooth, very nice. I never noticed the ending until I read the write up and reviews. I agree now that it is a bit ubrupt and the cello doesn't end all to well, but overall it doesn't detract from the mix as a whole. Great job. -
OCR00589 - Xenogears "Koiji na Shi no Genchou"

The gurgle is fine at first...but then it goes...through the entire mix. I actually don't hate this mix, but there does need to be more going on. When stuff is actually happening I think it's decent. Nothing terribly great, but listenable and somewhat enjoyable. Definately needs some improvement, but there is some promise shown in the mix. The section starting around 3:00 sticks out, more development on that would have been nice. -

Having not played the game, I can say that it definately sounds very 'Asian Stereotypical.' Pretzel does some nice work with different sound choices, and I enjoyed listening to the track. The section at 1:08 and then later in the track are my favorite. The sudden 'mean' feeling made me laugh a little. A cute track that I enjoyed, nice work, Pretzel! -
OCR00276 - Final Fantasy "Saga Prelude"

Quoting everyone else. The samples are bad, there isn't another way to put it. Arrangement is alright, but I personally think it's nothing particularly special. I can't really find anything interesting that makes me want to listen to this, and the tune-up/applause make me groan. -

This is really an awesome arrangment. Kudos to Patrick for the hard work he put into this! Great to see a style not oft seen here up on the front page. -
Lyrics are done for me, and I think I've gotten a decent recording. I don't, however, have any way to process them (the 'verb and such). If anyone wants to help out, I could really use it. Thanks

OCR01743 - Doom II "Crushing Headache"

Now that I've listened to this quietly, I'm realizing this needs to be turned UP in order to get the effect. Theremin's also add 50 points to any mix they're included in. Don't ask what the points are for, though. The bass line gets repetative, nothing that can be done about it. I can't say this is a track that I would listen to for fun. By the end I felt that nothing had really happened. I do enjoy the industrial feel of it, and I can definately imagine blasting this in my car. Not my type of mix, but I can see why others would enjoy it, and I do enjoy the percussion. -
OCR01199 - Final Fantasy IV "Phoenix Symphonic"

Awesome interpretation. ReMixes that come up like this, where you can recognize the original but see it in a new light, are amazing. Definately reminds me why I love this site so much. Instruments are mixed very well, volumes are great, with nothing standing out or being too far in the background. Things feel a little slow from 1:10 to the tempo change, but it's nothing that terribly bothered me. The low end right at the tempo change feels just ever so slightly off to the drums to me. I think it's the attack times of the instruments compared to the drums, but it feels off just enough to distract me a bit. If I don't listen so closely it's not a problem at all. Overall, definately a recommended mix, and one of my favorite FF4 tracks here. -
OCR00738 - Final Fantasy "Hardcore"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Great interpretation on an oft-heard theme. The jazz sax solo is cool, but kind of a strange addition to a song called 'Hardcore.' I felt like some things could have been a little louder and almost rougher to make it feel more...well, hardcore. A good mix, not my favorite, but still very enjoyable to listen to. -
OCR00173 - Final Fantasy "Medieval Kaoss"
DragonAvenger replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like the staccato melody. A nice reminder of the Nintendo feel for things, but still sounds good. Not terribly too much done to the melody, but that's ok. Drums are good, I think they still stand up after all this time. Like the solo section, the long notes contrast to the staccato nicely, and it doesn't feel out of place or anything. Still a good listen after all this time. -
OCR00636 - Diablo "Tristram Rock"
DragonAvenger replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'll be repeating everyone else here. Great start for a mix, but needs MOAR!!! Drums are bland and kind of fake sounding. Doesn't bother me too much, probably wouldn't have been as bad if there were more to the mix, but it comes to question when there is so little else to talk about. Nice oboe, though. -
OCR01741 - Doom II "Running from Evil Horde"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Just watching my brother play Doom as a kid freaked me out, but that's another story. Great opening riffs, the first minute is great. 1:30~2:00 felt a little to empty to me. Felt like there should have been more going on there. I don't know what's original or source, but the guitars do nice work overall. Some of the clashing parts are pretty epic sounding. I would have liked a little more direction as a whole, it felt like the song didn't really 'go anywhere'. Some parts were really great that I would like to have heard more of. Nice work overall. -
OCR01742 - Chrono Trigger "Behind the Sealed Door"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is an interesting mix, combining two themes that I wouldn't think to put together. There are a lot of good things going on in the mix, but I personally am not a fan of it. There are too many small things that I don't like that add up. A lot of it is probably personal preferance. The tempo feels a little rushed in the beginning, which makes it feel a little unnatural. The pianos are doing good work, but the speed just pushes it a little to far for me. The choir sample used in the Prelude is nice, and there was a nice set of harmonies in it, but when the drums come in they it feels like it's slightly out of time. I also generally feel like the jump from the Sealed Door theme to the Prelude is a big jump; the two parts feel like two different songs. I don't think there's a point in the mix where I like the drums, I'm sorry to say. They feel too pasted on, and to me seem like they just don't match what's going on. The transition from the Prelude back into Sealed Door is excellent, however. Great movement in the piano that leads right into the sealed door. Easily my favorite part of the mix. Also the most original stuff in the mix. More of that would be good. Overall, it's not my cup of tea, but there is a lot of good work going on in the mix that I can appreciate even if I don't like it. Congratulations on your first mix, though, and I'll look forward to hearing more work from you. -
OCR01451 - Final Fantasy "Finally Home"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I played this song for my music theory students, and we all agreed that it should be played at the end of an 80's show about some teenager who learns new life lessons and narrates every episode. *Cue music* *show teenager polishing his beat up Buick* *Cue narration* "...and in the end, did it really matter if I didn't win the Corvette? Well, yes, but I know there are better things to worry about, too." Then again, I come up with random things. Regardless, I really like this song. The interpretation on it is amazing, and the change of style really fits well. Definately a keeper for me. -
OCR00553 - Final Fantasy "Crystal Rave"
DragonAvenger replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The synth that comes in at 1:24 is way too loud, like others have said. It meshes for the most part, but gets a little off here and there, which just grates on me after a while. The beginning is decent, when the bass first comes in I was enjoying the piece. For a piece as remixes as this one is, this is a different take on things, though it sounds very similar to the FFX version of the prelude, if compared side-by-side. There isn't really much interpretation to the themes, much more could have been done to add variety to the mix. It's a mix that shows its age, unfortunately. -
Surpisingly, I am almost done with my lyrics and melody at this point. I'm unsure of how I want to end it. Hopefully I can finish it up and record it soon.

MMX3 has awesome music. This is a fantastic mix, and a great return for Beatdrop. Great adaption of the source, really driving. Great job. -

I think what was done was fine. A lot of people don't understand the structure of songs, which is a big first step in learning how to mix. Seeing it broken down like that was a good start for the people who now nothing about it. No one should expect that they can come out of the panal knowing how to make anything, honestly, but seeing the structure gives them an idea of how things work on a basic level. Perhaps coupling that with one example of how to create a small section (one of the A or B choices, or even like a 2 bar repeating pattern in a song) would make things a little more in depth, but not take up too much more time. Going further than that would get too complicated and probably would lose audience interest. -
The opening is deceptive, in a good way. LOVE the brass in here. Great use of it. Great style for this mix, it makes a wonderful transition. Everything fits together very well, very finesse. I like the almost 'Final Fantasy Prelude' feel at 2:13. The adaption of the melody is really good there. The ending is a bit ubrupt, but overall nice work.

When a remix makes you want to play the game again, you know it's good. ANSO does his usual awesome-ness. Love the ethnic feel of this, reminiscent of the game. Palpable is right that the lead gets a little too haywire for my tastes, but it's nothing to turn me away from enjoying the mix, and it doesn't sound out of place. Of the two JC mixes, I think I like PMOS better, but this one is still quite enjoyable.

OCR01731 - Final Fantasy X "Endless Skies"
DragonAvenger replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Definately a grooving piece, nice work there. Lot's of points I liked on it, and I liked how the source was converted. ~2:50 with the change in bass is one of the parts I enjoyed. A subtle change, but it worked well. The dropout to just piano was jarring, and I think the biggest reason for me is because the tempo is lost. If the piano had kept up to speed I think it wouldn't have felt as awkward as it did. It still made a good transition back, but there were a few sketchy moments. Still a good first remix, hope to hear more from PR.
