OCR01605 - Final Fantasy VI "Cyanide"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The ethnic part is great, and the rock one is pretty good, too. However, I don't think that they mix well. To me, this basically seems like two pieces glued together with a rather lackluster transition. It's not a bad song, not at all. I would love to hear more from XMark, especially if it were made in the same fashion the intro here was done. -
The Lemmings go to Europe (and Dance the Night Away!)
Martin Penwald replied to Psythik's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Oh, and don't forget the drumroll right before the main drum kicks in. Every cheesy Eurodance song from the 90s has a drumroll. Every. Single. One. -
You do know that this thread has more than 17 000 views? But anyway, do as you wish. I don't care where you post about it, as long as I can read it, hehe.

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
Martin Penwald replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Yeah, I know that it's not locking, but posting in a thread which bumps it. However, this is exactly what you do, since you always post the link to the review thread. As I said, locking WIP threads is okay with me, but I just wanted to say that it shouldn't be done with 5 or 6 threads at the same time. The WIPs need as much exposure as they can get, and kicking them of the first page doesn't really help that. Just sayin' -
OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
Martin Penwald replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Not exactly a design problem, but whatever. Liontamer recently closed a whole bunch of threads in the WIP section. While I understand why he does this and don't really have a problem with it, I think that he shouldn't lock 6 or 7 at a time, especially if they're as old as, for example, this one anyway. The reason is that every lock bumps the thread and thus takes away space which could be used to show more recent WIPs on the first page of the WIP subforum. Thanks to the massive amount of stickies, there isn't that much space anyway, so bumping 6 or 7 old threads at once doesn't seem like a very good idea to me. -
Xenogears - Gathering Stars in the Night Sky Remix
Martin Penwald replied to Kivou's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
At first, I was like "This is horrible. Absolutely horrible. I can't remember the original song!" But listening to your version, it all came back. Now, about your remix. I think the guitar is still too close to the listener; try to get it to the same level the piano is at. I personally like the very laid back style of the piece. Changing the pace would take away a lot of the atmosphere IMO. Some solos would be nice, though. -
^ Lol, spam. Liontamer, if you please... I personally like the Death Wind intro, but the piano sounds very rigid IMO. And as ToN already pointed out, the transition is rather bumpy. Kepp working on this one, I love me some F-Zero mixes.

Firstly, you may want to add a link to the source tune if you're remixing something not as well known as, for example, Chrono Trigger and stuff. On to the song, I think that the low range could use a little more oomph. Furthermore, the basic beat stays the same throughout the whole song. Now this is something that you could say is rather typical for good ol' 90s Eurodance/Trance, but if you keep it that way, I'd advise you to add some variation by changing the synths playing in the foreground around. -
OCR01602 - Chrono Trigger "Back 2 Skala"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I don't really care for Chrono Trigger remixes, since there's an awful lot of them. However, this one blew me away. The ambient style of the song works very well, and the drums are simply amazing. I can't think of any other recent song where I had so much fun just listening to the drums. Excellent work. -
Streets of rage 2 remix - Streets of dance
Martin Penwald replied to Foxtacy's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
So, are we gonna get a better encoded version of this song or what? -
This song won my heart the very moment the music started. This is how a badass fighting game song/remix is supposed to sound. Funnily enough, to me, the remix sounds more like a song from early SNK games, not Capcom. Heaps of fun nonetheless. I agree that the voice samples in the very beginning weren't the best choice. The ending with the piano wasn't particularly interesting either; should have ended with a boom. Overall, very nice work. Diggin' it a lot.

^ I'm listening to this release as I'm typing these words, and I have to say it's a nice one.

Streets of rage 2 remix - Streets of dance
Martin Penwald replied to Foxtacy's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Before I start, please include the game you're remixing in the thread's title; that way, you'll get more attention. Now to the mix: I really like what I hear so far; reminds me a lot of early 90's techno, probably because of the piano. HOWEVER the songs sounds like it were encoded at 32 kb. Maybe it's the myspace player, or maybe you uploaded some low-quality preview version, but this takes away a lot of the quality. Post some real, good-quality mp3, please. Or I'm completely off and this is the way you intended the song to be. In which case I'd like you to think this decision over... -
I really like the vocals, though the lyrics themselves could be better (the oil-and-water line is gold, though. Actually, I like the whole chorus). Arrangementwise, this didn't really do anything for me. The music is there, but it doesn't grab my attention. I prefer Rayza/Gecko Yamori's remix of the theme.

OCR01599 - Super Mario Bros. "Mario Likes Thorazine"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very interesting take on a theme that has basically been remixed to death and back. Shnabubula takes this very familiar source tune and makes it into something no-one would expect. Nice work. That being said, why is the remix so incredibly quiet? Compared to other songs, I have to pump up the volume considerably when listening to this one. -
The 4chan remix is amazing. I've been listening to it ever since it was used as background music in /b/

OCR01598 - Jazz Jackrabbit 2 "Jackrabbit Transformer"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The thing that I find most interesting about this mix is how Mazedude manages to give it this epic feeling. Usually, people go for an orchestra-version of a song if they want to achieve this certain, film-score-ish feeling. Mazedude, although taking a more electronic approach, manages to do create epicness by making the arrangement outstanding. I'm truly impressed. Btw, the synth coming in at 1:22 makes the song sound kind of like a tune from Super Metroid, which works for me perfectly. -
Street Fighter Alpha 2 Dhalsim
Martin Penwald replied to lazygecko's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I, for one, like the boing synth. The song starts off with some nice 90's Eurodance style, before it spaces out thanks to the interesting choice of instruments. Digging the voice samples from 0:17 on; more of that, please. The beat entering at 0:27...I'm torn on that. On the one hand, it adds to the 90's techno feeling, on the other hand, it's kinda bland. Doesn't sound interesting or anything; just your average, run-off-the-mill standard beat. -
OCR01597 - Final Fantasy Adventure "Amanda's Tear"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This remix definitely has a RPG-ish feeling to it, i.e. it sounds true to its origins. Which is nice; you don't get that too often. As was said before, the transition at 1:30 is pretty sweet. The song could've used more of this, as it is a very interesting change of pace and instrumentation. -
OCR01596 - Final Fantasy X "Twilight of Ivory"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Exactly what I thought of when I listened to this mix for the first time. Also, exactly the reason why it doesn't do anything for me. It's just too slow, and there's nothing else to make this track interesting. Not my cup of coffee. -
OCR01595 - Contra "Feeding Frenzy"
Martin Penwald replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The guitars sound great, and the arrangement is pretty good. However, as was mentioned before, the kick drum gets lost in the background sometimes. Which is a pity, seeing as how some kick-ass drum could make this track even better. Nice work. -
Civ 4: Baba Yetu (Taucer's vocal debut!)
Martin Penwald replied to Geoffrey Taucer's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Seconded, as well as the notion about pulling the vocals back a bit. Furthermore, the irish whistle sounds a little...rough in some places. I don't know how to describe it, but it's as if the whistle becomes too loud directly after the player inhales and starts again. If that makes any sense. -
There is a fire burning close to my house.
Martin Penwald replied to Nicole Adams's topic in General Discussion
This is something I have been wondering about for years. You have these fires, what, every friggin' year? And every time it's the same; not enough firefighters, not enough helicopters etc. You'd expect something would be done about this, but no...
