  1. I've had this in my playlist for a few years now, and I like it a lot, Though im not sure how many liberties it takes with the source material, it's overall enjoyable, if not a bit repetitive. The synths used through out are nice, but I'd prefer the beat to be a bit harder, as right now it's sortof just the middle of the road.
  2. Pretty repetitive, but the synths are nice. I think this mix could have done better with a lot more interpretation. Even a little solo or something would have made this a lot less samey, and more interesting in the long run.
  3. I bet a million dollars the song it notated was Ice Cap Zone.
  4. chiiiiiill. Holy crap this is laid back. I'm in a pretty serious sleep-deprivation mode right now, so this track while at work is *dangerously chill*. Putting it on repeat only amplifies the chillosity, and Not quite what I normally look for, as it isn't BIG BIGGER BIGGEST in terms of grandiose and epic melodic lines, but it is very well produced and super deep. A lot of thought went into this, and I have to say that though it's not my first choice for something to listen to, I certainly wouldnt turn my nose up at it. Super extra mega bonus points for how old the mix is. Very very few mixes would hold up this long afterwards.
  5. Some pretty cool parts, but the production hurts, and im not diggin the hihat sound. It's way to piercing and doesn't seem to be meshing with the rest of the mix. Arrangement is pretty insane, and very creative. This would have been awesome recorded with real guitars. Overall some issues, but in the end, the arrangement wins me over.
  6. The music from them is really good, but the problem I have had is mostly the super iconic image of Phoenix objecting and pointing. Any idea I can think of is some variation on that pose, and it just seems lame to me
  7. A little short, with a somewhat abrupt ending, but very nice work. The flute was far back enough in the mix that it didn't really detract as much as other are saying. I think the weakness here is that the song is pretty much verbatim, and needs a good deal of additional material. It's been personalized for sure, but it could use some more. It is nice that it's such an early mix, but the sound quality is there, Usually when I see a mix with an OCR number of less than 400, I just think of tinny synths, but this was smooth and well produced.
  8. Not quite sure how i feel about this one. THe opening synth has some retro cool, but the guitar sample is decidedly undudeical. The lead synth is decently sequenced, but is a bit loud and lofi. Obviously old school, but still charming.
  9. Pretty decent mix, the volume is a bit inconsistant, but otherwise not bad. THe call and response between the lead and rhythm guitars is my favorite part.
  10. Before I listened to this, I saw it was part of the radical dreamers flood of 2001 and was a bit hesitant, as most of the mixes in the group were pretty much joke mixes, but I can safely say not only is this a kickass track, but it's probably the best of the bunch by a pretty wide margin. Very authentic and energetic, and the differences from the original are very welcome. Surprisingly good, check it out.
  11. Really nice source selection, What a great cheerful song, I think the space effects are pretty cool, and though the percussion could use a bit more punch, it's a mix that holds up pretty damn well several years later. I am really digging the feeling of forward motion on this one. The samples are slightly lofi, but it adds to the charm. Recommended.
  12. I'm not digging the guitar samples, but the rest of the instrumentation is pretty damn nice. The piano seems a bit tinny to me, but it works well enough. Sax solo was all about the rhythm and tone, not too much the melody. Nice playing though. Overall a pretty chilled out BG track, with an underlying edge to it. It gets better as it goes on, taking more creative licenses, and its a pretty good source as well. Overall pretty fun stuff, I like it.
  13. A bit funky, but the bass seems a bit too low in the mix to properly get groovin. I like how the strings tease the melody for most of the song, and the synth comes in later with the full thing. Nothing completely sticks out to me about this mix really. Good, but not great.
  14. The intro didn't quite lead into the main part of the song as well as it could. If there was more of a crescendo and then a slight pause it would have made more sense I think. The samples used aren't very good, but the arrangement is pretty cool. The layers of percussion give it a great feel, it's just the lead instruments that let it down. I'd love to hear an update of this with higher quality lead sounds, actually.
  15. Pretty standard for most of the track, though the pizzicato strings at the end were pretty awesome. I'd like to hear more of that. The ending fade out was really bad, cheap and cheesy. You just start up the melody to fade it out? Sorry, but no thanks. <--- this is my disappointed face
  16. SLOW MOTION STRUT! This mix is pretty sweet, starting off mysterious, ramping up the strut-osity, and then taking a bit of a break before struting anew. Great drums and sound effects, and the ending pizzicato strings really add to it. Cool and calculated.
  17. The bassline and production is really nice, and the minor key chocobo theme is sweet, with a smooth shift to major. The flute on Rydia annoys me not because of the sound of the flute, but there are some sour notes, and the transition to it from the chocobo theme is way too abrupt. As for the feel of this, the sounds are pristine, and if it got rid of the sour notes and awkward transition, It'd be a classic.
  18. This took me several listens to completely grasp, since the structure seemed a bit strange to me, but there are plenty of immediate, smaller hooks that keep it interesting. The larger hooks begin to emerge after a few more listens, and I can start to get a feel for it as a whole, rather than several connected sections. At first it seemed that the transitions aren't very strong, but once I had gotten a grasp of the mix as a single unit, their subtlety became less of a detriment. I still think that the fills could be a bit stronger between sections, but they are by no means weak transitions. I think the best part of this mix is the evocative imagery that it (and most of Zwitra's work) brings up. I don't normally associate colors and music, but somehow when I listen to this, I get a really strong feeling of subtle blues and greens. Cool stuff, but it's kindof distracting, especially here at work. Regardless of how crazy I am this morning, this is one you have to work for a little, but it really pays off. Phenomenal work, and highly recommended.
  19. I dig the atmosphere in this, and the beats are cool, but i'm not really feeling the ending. It gets some decent treatment, but it just doesn't seem to make sense in conjunction to the rest of the mix.
  20. A seemingly overlooked track and one that deserves a little bit of attention, this is probably the only Mutagene track that I really have gotten into. The more energetic beats make his typical dense atmospheres much more interesting in the short-term, and then the deeper stuff comes with repeated listenings. A pretty nice compromise, if you ask me. Production is nice and clean on this one as well.
  21. some of the transitions seem a bit akward, and a bit of the synth is a bit dated, but overall it's a fun jaunt through a dungeon>fight>victory sequence and really echoes the game itself in how things would progress. The drum fills are especially nice.
  22. Wow you really captured the old school thrash feeling here, I dig totally agressive rhythm sound, and though i'm not sure about the cymbals, everything else works pretty well, and sounds very authentic. I dig it, nice work.
