  1. Great advice, as the current system is FUBAR. I work at Clear Channel as a designer (for the time being) in the main office, so though I don't take part in the meetings of higher ups (ya rite lol), I can see the churn of the massive sales force for even just the local radio stations, and from people i've talked to, all of the hundreds of stations are facing the same thing. The record company/media giant partnership is crumbling under their feet, and while some markets are treading water, hundreds are unprofitable because people are finding their music elsewhere and the ad dollars are slowing to a trickle. The system is changing fast, and right now is an awesome time to be an independent artist if you have the skill and mostly the motivation.
  2. I'm diggin the funkification here, a lot of variety and some great choices in sound. It reminds me of some of the earlier OCR style with a stronger funk feel, but updated qualitywise in the production area. Kick ass work.
  3. Holy drums, I have to agree the samples on this are excellent. I'm digging the machine gun bass near the middle. Very unique for an otherwise ambient mix and I think it works pretty well. The screaming and guitar really have to go, IMO. I can see how the screams would enhande the mix for some, but they just grate on me. PS. love the drums
  4. the constant hiss is annoying at first, but as the mix progresses, it adds to the spooky ambiance. The drums throughout are cool and there are enough different processed sounds that you never really know what will happen next, but it always fits. My favorite parts where things break down a bit and it's just pads and bass drum, along with that hiss. Very cool stuff.
  5. Not really digging this one; it sounds basically like a NSF rip with some panning and additional drums. It's unfortunate that Charles died before he could really put the time in to be an awesome mixer.
  6. It started off pretty good, but once the melody came in, it lost me. The melodic synths were just kindof generic and it sounded like they were in a different key than the opening. I also wish the snare was stronger as well, as the current one sounds like a snare drum being played with toothpicks instead of drumsticks.
  7. A seriously old school mix that holds up really well over 1500 mixes later. The blend of 8 bit synths and more modern ones works very well, and the minimal (and tasteful!) use of car zooming makes things extra nice. The song is constantly evolving, and isn't content to simply repeat itself. Well played, Sir. Well played.
  8. Very moody and cool, but not as melodic as I would prefer. The samples are pretty good, and the piano and cello meld well. A little too moody to be relaxing, but not exciting enough to be energizing. It's nice work, but not quite what I am in the mood for right now.
  9. Some pretty melodic interpretation near the 2/3 mark, but the samples drag it down, and the ending is really bad. I am really sad VGmix is down at the moment because i'd love to hear a revisitation. Hopefully when the site is back up i'll have the chance.
  10. Strange for sure, nowadays if this was to hit the judges panel, I predict there'd be a three-page-long debate. Personally, I think the song is very creative, and the seemingly random drums overpower the melody a bit. The intro was a bit strange, but that didn't bother me, it was the massive distortion on the volume on the bill and ted quote as well as the crowd. It just didn't work for me. Anyways.. Not my cuppa, but I recommend everyone give it a listen, you won't be hearing anything like it any time soon.
  11. Wow, the percussion is really good! Very clever starting straight up with it, it allowed me to really grasp the focus of the mix. The pad attack is a little slow, and the flutes are a little too midi for my taste, but the steel drums were great and there is a lot of energy going into this. The breakdown is awesome, and the drum solo at the end is also fantastic.
  12. I owned suikoden 2 for a few years before finally selling it, and it was easily the best suikoden game and soundtrack, but it's not worth $100 unless you are willing to pay that much. The art was great, the battles were fun, and if you have that kind of money to spare, by all means go for it.
  13. I like the creative and somewhat staccato melody. THe synths were well chosen for the melody type, and though I feel the soundfiled could have been filled out a bit more, this works as some driving dance music quite well. The short chromatic section was a nice break before going back to a similar groove as the opening with different ornamentation section. A fun mix with some nice sound effects and short enough to not overstay it's welcome.
  14. It starts out somewhat repetative, but once the main melody comes in, it's a lot more interesting. There are enough mnor breakdowns and buildups to keep things from getting out of hand, but overall it seems to run a little on the long side. THe synth used for the melody is very nice and slidey.
  15. I've never heard the original (or even of the game), so I'm not sure how the interpretation stacks up, but it seems to me that things get a little mired down in repetition. THe mix seems to get a good start, but spins it's filtered and panning wheels for a few minutes before closing down. Synths come and go throughout, but the same arpeggiated pattern plays throughout the entire mix, and it's so much in the forefront that the rest is just laid off to the side. Even the key change doesn't really help. About 2/3 of the way through the part drops out for a breakdown, but within a few seconds it is right back. The synths are nice, but it's too repetitive for me to want to listen to more than once. After the first time, i've heard that arpeggio enough, thanks.
  16. Fantastically smooth, this is what I call quality remixing! I love mixes like this that evoke something beyond just being a good song, but other senses too. Listening to this, I can imagine driving along coastal roads on a sunny day with the top down outrun car. The guitar runs certainly aren't possible to play this cleanly, but they work well, the strength of the mix overall makes up for any issues there. I love the piano chords throughout, and the strings that come in near the end along with the heavier beat really progress things. Excellent work, highly recommended.
  17. Far too short. The switch to a minor key is cool, but really beyond that, it is a straight up cover. Like previously stated, there is a lot of potential for reinterpretation here, adding more interesting drums or elaborating on some of the riffs, especially the synth bassline would be very welcome.
  18. The drums are too quiet, and the transitions aren't as smooth as i'd prefer, but this is some pretty solid work. I especially enjoy the acoustic sections. Awesome ending! BAM!
  19. The answer is pretty much no. Puzzle pirates is awesome though, so if you can swing that for free, by all means do so.
  20. some of the effects, like the heavily delayed bass synth is really cool, and a lot of the counterpoint ideas that are used are cool, but the effects-only breakdown went far too long, and the hihats are distractingly boring. The rest of the drums are nice, and there is a lot of creative processing going on, so overall this comes off as enjoyable if flawed.
  21. Sounds a little too much like you too the original and slapped some drums and minor guitar parts on it. There just isn't enough to make it stand out.
