  1. Some of the additional arrangement parts sound great, like the strings and harpsichord halfway through, but some just don't really make sense.
  2. Can't say i'm really a fan, but it's super old, so we'll chalk another mix up to the constantly improving standards of the site. The strings in the middle are actually pretty nice, wish there was more of that.
  3. A little reverb-heavy, but overall a very well done orchestral remix. Very good use of samples and motifs, it has several different moods and atmospheres, and makes the source tune sound very Hollywood. Nice percussion work as well. I remember this was on the front page when I first signed up for the site.
  4. Great piano intro, but from there, the sound quality goes a bit downhill and whether or not the sounds are all presets, I can't tell for sure, but it gets really bad, IMO, though the arrangement is very good. A pretty clear oldskool mix that would be awesome if the sound quality was updated.
  5. The bass and guitar sound good, but the lead instruments just kind of grate. The mallets sound fantastic though. Cute ending too.
  6. The song described through interpretive prose: Pray thee, on this first day of the seventh year of our Lord, the King, we quest forth to slay the heinous trolls which doth infest our fair lands like a cancerous plague! We shalt summon the bravest warriors of the kingdom using Grimdor's Ancient Horn of Summoning (you can tell it is ancient by the not so awesome patch used.), and gather the noble souls together for a crusade, the magnitude which has not been seen! Brave warriors, now that thou art summoned, GET OUT THERE AND BASH SOME FUCKING TROLLS!!! GHAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!! Upgrade the trumpet patch and it's a winner, IMO. Little heavy on the feedback at the end, but a great surprise and a fun mix.
  7. Great synth counterpoint, both in patch and excecution. The high pitch open hat (or something that sounds like an open hat) is killing me though. so piercing. ;_;
  8. I really like the backing instruments on this, but the lead instrument (sounds like a koto?) isn't really doing it for me. It would have made a good backing instrument as well, and I think a nylon string guitar would have been a better lead. Some cool melodic twists though, and the beat is very driving.
  9. Fantastic mood, but that ending just makes me sad. I pretty much agree with all of the other reviews; It has a wonderful nostalgic feeling, and a very serene atmosphere, but it is dragged off to fadeout land just as things are getting good. It seems like Quinn just ran out of an idea, and I think that he should have just shelved the mix for a few months and come back to it rather than do the fadeout. A half baked classic, if that's even possible.
  10. I'd pleasantly dance to this. It has a pretty long intro, with not a lot of melody at first, but once things start going, it's really nice. Great synths and well produced overall, this would be a great bridge track in betwen trance anthems at a club due to the not-so-melodic intro and outro. Pretty good stuff, I bet it'd make a killer radio edit.
  11. Totally groovin', normally it's tough for a mix like this to really grab me, since it's so between the lines and subtle, but this really did the job. I am digging the drums, but I am not familiar with the default that was used. Regardless, if I recognize a default beat, It does cheapen a mix for me, so I can understand the trepidation the judges showed. The synths and piano are awesome though, and I have to say overall i'm a fan of the mix.
  12. A pretty mix, with a very nice melody, but it seemed to me the flutes were needlessly shrill and piercing. Might just be my setup? Not being very familiar with the original, I went to check it out, and after a few listens, the arrangement is pretty clear, and comes out being much better than if it had been a more conservative mix. I'd even say the original material added is actually better than the original source tune. I feel the mix could use a little more lower register, as it's high end is a little heavy. Despite these, and some older sounding orchestra samples, this is a good mix, and has aged pretty gracefully.
  13. For a Pac Man remix this is pretty interprative and it makes it a lot more interesting to listen to. Some of the sound effects got a bit annoying by the end of the mix, but everything else works well enough. The production seems a little crowded, and could have been given a little more space, but the idea is sound. This rave style music is perfect for a game where you run around in the dark chomping down pills.
  14. it's impressive you stretched such a short sample into a (somewhat) lengthier mix, but im not sure that counterpoint and a brief breakdown were the best way to do it. Regardless, this mix is ancient, so I can understand the difference between then and now.
  15. It starts out pretty good but hardly changes for the duration. Sorry, needs more variation to keep my interest.
  16. Despite having some old school midi sounds, this mix has some charm. The hi-hats have some fantastic patterns, and I am really digging the kick. The sounds are overall a bit lofi, but there is a plenty of energy and the mix ends up being very likable.
  17. Short and to the point. The sustained strings have a very chilling effect, and really do make you feel submerged. The bass and drums are pretty good, but the piano and flute are a little too mechanical and exposed for my tastes. The guitar is similarly mechanical, but it's used sparingly and thus it's a little easier to handle. Overall pretty cool, but pretty obvious that it is an earlier OCR work.
  18. Well played, Sir. This has been in my playlist for a few years now, and it still sounds fresh. The arrangement isn't as out there as a lot of recent ones, but I am pretty sure this mix has earned the status of an OCR classic. Highly recommended.
  19. just about done with my sketch, then onto colors. 9 days is a long time, dont worry
  20. I'm not normally one to post in ass-pat threads, but this is some seriously cool news. Congrats on not only getting a cool gig, but one with a very talented composer. The music from Civ IV was fantastic, and i'm sure the expansion will be even cooler.
  21. Pretty nice work; It seems the vocal melody doesn't always fit in all the spots, but with the ethereal quality of the mix overall it doesn't really detract. I'm not huge on atmospheric music with minimal melody, but there is a lot of nice piano keeping things in good crossover territory. I dig, nice work guys.
  22. I'd also recommend Frost mage, shadow priest, or paladin if you want to heal.
  23. Cute intermission music. You can tell this is really casual and fun, and it makes it stronger as a result. A little too short i'd say, but it's enjoyable to listen to.
  24. Short and sweet, the harp and pizzicato sound great together. It doesn't elaborate too much, but it still has a nostalgic charm to the sound that I find appealing. It takes a few listens to get a good grasp of it, but it's short enough that repeat listens are pretty easy to do.
  25. A bit too basic for my tastes, the chocobo noises were fun, but overall it was 8bit melody and then drums. At least it was short.
