OCR00263 - Sonic CD (JP) "Palmtree Panic"
avaris replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Nice, I've recently been listening to more of Joe Redifer's mixes and this is def sweet. Even though his mixes are from OCR's earlier days the sound quality stills holds up against alot of todays stuff which says alot. Def has the sweet island feel. Lots of nice composition on the piano and lil production values in the writing all over the place keep this one moving. -
Y's has some great music and are some damn fun games, now onto the mix. I def like the chill feel of this one. The composition is still driving and has some pace, but the soundscape still provides for a very relaxing mix to listen to. I'm surprised this is all the way back 00' as it still sounds really good today. It's testament to the production values on this.

Secret of Mana > Legend of Zelda3 (didn't get into evermore really...goofy ass dog) If ur into action adventure def check out zelda, secret of mana, secret of evermore, and terranigma. P.S. Lufia2 is the prequel to Lufia1, just in case you didn't know.

OCR01537 - Final Fantasy X "Summoner's Love"
avaris replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I remember hearing early versions of this on the WIP board, and while there were tons of little revisions made along the way each of them got consistently better. Also the xtra reverb on the vocals def is a positive, and after hearing earlier versions the xtra verb was necessary to have everything sit right. My fav thing bout this mix is the whole vibe, relaxing with a lil ethnic flare. The execution of both artists creative ideas def made this an excellent piece. In an arrangement and structure like this IMO the loopy sounding rythms actually fit in nicely. I really like the structure and flow of this mix, from the intro to all the lil things EFields threw in towards the latter part of the mix. Congrats dudes! -
I picked production, but I think something alot of newer mixers and even some people have bee doin it awhile kinda screw up on is the soundscape. 1. Being able to pick instruments that have a character and feel similar to that of the source tune or style the remixer is choosing. The emotion of the sound the instrument needs to match the emotion of the composition. 2. Talking about picking the applicable sounds. That it's a good rule of thumb to choose instruments that don't naturally don't take up the same frequencies.(of course that's where panning comes in) Also depending on what key the instrument plays C1-C10 it will change the frequencies that the instrument will be putting out. All that's about is getting high quality emotive sounds that sit well together. Easier said than done though. I'm guessing maybe those are some of the thinsg you might talk about, if not then maybe some things to add? Oh yeah i'd love to hear about glitching all that shite too. Of course that's a more advanced technique?

OCR00588 - Secret of Mana "Dirge for the Frosty Plains"
avaris replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This was the mix that I discovered that lead to me OCR, so I'm already biased there. I'm even more biased bc this is completely friggin awesome. More specifically the mood that was created. mp really took the source and made it even more emotive, doin that is extremely hard to do. The little voices around 1:41 really sound pretty sweet. The new lead synth while being more aggresive doesn't change the mood. I gotta say overall the combination of the soundscape, variation, and simplistic writing are amazing. -
OCR00644 - Lufia II "Of Sinistrals and Men"
avaris replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Sweetness I'm a huge fan of the Lufia games. This is def one of the best source tunes from the series. It always set the mood whenever it came in during the game. This mix def makes use of the melody, the backing (what sounds like a processed harp?) is def a nice touch. Overall I wish there were some parts with some more saw likes synths to heighten the mood. Overall this is def enjoyable, well written and thought out. -
avaris - Bombay Sapphire OK so i just got Reason and I've really been wanting to try it out bc it's pretty cool program. So this mix is my first attempt eva to do anything with Reason. Uh yeah anyways BUMPAGE and i'm off to write a reasearch paper *&$%Q@(#%$)&^Q()$%)Q*#$...

VOCR: Vocal Remixing Compo- WINNERS ANNOUNCED!
avaris replied to Jillian Aversa's topic in Competitions
I'm not upset. I just have to figure out a way to record while it's playing without recording the song itself again. record the background music to a cd, or sync it to a mp3 player. The listen to it on headphones on a low volume, and record and sing off the mike? -
i like cabbage Sweet stuff dude, the voice overs are def different but they fit. Good synth design as always.

Dark Gaia WIP-Illusion of Gaia-PROJECT: Crescendo to Chaos
avaris replied to Ronyn's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The layer of sound you got in the background def fits the bill. Entrance around :27 is well executed. The composition on this sounds really good. Kinda has a film score esque film to it. Some of those strings in the intro, they're playing what sounds like c7-c8 could maybe produce a better feel with a tremelo sample. Also prob later in the when you reintroduce some of the brass elements again, getting some low brass in there that really tears through the soundscape could really be a nice touch. Not too much to say other than this is good and I def feel this one could pretty damn sick when your done with it. -

OCR00831 - Chrono Trigger "Lost Fragments of the Past"
avaris replied to Disco Dan's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is pretty awesome. Oceanfire def excels at minimalist pieces. The is simple and highly emotive. The trade mark of his two OCR mixes. I really do like the and the flow of the piece. It really puts you another place. -
Yes friggin Lufia, I've been listening to this song for awhile now and I always keep on coming back to it. My favorite part is def the intro. Great choice on the source tunes, lufia has some incredible music. I really like all the variation in guitars and everything Darangen did with them. Gives the mix a very original feel.

OCR00477 - Xenogears "Indie Rock Dajil"
avaris replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Sweet stuff, def diggin the concept as well as the execution. Some of the composition feel a bit repetative but bringing different sounds n and out as the song progresses is def a good thing. I really like what you've with the main melody, makes it even catchier. -
OCR00912 - Secret of Mana "Desert Snowstorm"
avaris replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yes more and more FFA and SoM musical goodness. I've listened to this a few times, but it is def one of those songs the more I hear the better it sounds. Very high production values all around, i think it's also one of the better soundscapes Ziwtra has constructed. Breakdown at 2:35 was a great idea, and the new melody that came in shortly after was an even greater idea. Even though the new melodies in the 2nd half seem to produce very different emotions than the composition in the beggining I still like it. You gotta appreciate this unique song structure, bc it does work. Keeping the similar sounding rythms is what ties in the the 1st and 2nd half for me. -
That's cool Doomsday we all run into dry spells, but usually when u break out of em is when you do some of your best music, at least that's true in my case. Siamey you can do as many mixes as you want. If you are wanting to use a source tune that is already claimed then we'll have to see if we can figure something out if it's plausible.
-
Good stuff all around, I gotta agree with the bassline. I like the guitar around :50. The best strong point about this mix is the composition. It's tight and it's cleverly written. Packs a whole lot of ideas into a short time frame.
-
I just got the WIP for 'Shattering Dream Egg' from Ailsean it's some good stuff. I think we should sign him up for that song.
-
Yeah def a huge catalyst for video game music appreciation and for remixers trying to find some good source tunes to work with! Thanks dude.
