Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'IceCap Zone' (FEEDBACK)
Tensei replied to WillRock's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I love the mood you have going here, it's a very nice and soothing reinterpretation and the synth/synth guitar soloing reminds me of Protricities stuff in his heyday. Good stuff. Drums sound a bit lo-fi which tends to make the whole song sound cheap. Especially the kick could stand to be louder and have a fatter low end. When EQing I tend to give the kick substantial, narrowish boost around 50-60 Hz ( can be up to 10 dB if needed, just make sure it doesn't clip), cut everything between 300-1000 Hz from it (to accomodate the lower mids of other instruments, no more than about -5 dB), and give it another big, narrow boost between 3000-5000 Hz to bring out the click/attack (depends on the kick sound I'm going for). Don't be afraid to compare it to commercial tracks to determine exactly how loud the kick should be in the balancing of the mix. Snare is okayish considering it's a cheapo sample (at least it sounds like one ) , I wouldn't touch it any further, IMO it sits pretty well right now. Hi-hats are cheapo cheapo cheapo. But hell, what can you do . It might work if you used some sort of stereo seperation to widen the hi-hat a bit. I might be wrong but I think the velocity editing on the hi-hats and snare could be way more pronounced. Especially the snare roll at 1:10 sounds like AK-47 rifle fire because of the sample retriggering. When you're doing velocity editing on fast repeating samples always keep an eye on where a real drummer would place the accents. Say you have an 8th note hi-hat pattern (8 equally long hi-hat notes in one measure), I would place the strongest accent (about 90-100% of the velocity range) on the first and fifth note, the somewhat weaker accents (70%-80%) on the third and seventh note and the weakest ones (50-60%) on the rest (the second, fourth, sixth and eighth note). Note that a snare drum in rock music is usually played REALLY loud so you can get away with putting it at or near maximum velocity during normal beats (sounds best that way IMO), just remember that during rolls you should, again, change the velocity accordingly so it doesn't start to machine gun. IMO the lead synth that plays the main melody for most of the song should be a bit more interesting, it sounds kind of bland. LFO frequency cutoff modulation would add some movement to it and is pretty easy to set up. FM would work awesomely as well. In short, just experiment with it a bit, don't be afraid to add some effects like chorus and phaser to it. Anyway, keep it up, I think this is close enough to have a decent shot at getting past the panel, so it just needs some polish to seal the deal. -
The inconceivably exciting contest I entered
Tensei replied to The Legendary Zoltan's topic in General Discussion
I guess it's enka style vocals if the vocalist sounds like she's bawling after getting hit in the face. This has great arrangement as usual but production could be so much tighter. Loads of timing issues between the percussion and the rest of the instruments. Your guitar playing is nice (even the tone this time!) but please man, use some vibrato and sliding for expression, it sounds unnecessarily beginnerish. Either way, good luck, hope you win the contest. -
Always great to see someone take up remixing, props for that This mix definitely suffers from the typical 'newbie' mistakes (no offense of course), but good thing is, we were all there at some point and there's definite potential for improvement. Rather than giving specific pointers on the production I'll give some general though in-depth advice on improving your arrangement. Thing is, this mix sounds is lacking energy and sounds very empty, mainly because it's missing a very critical element, namely a bass instrument. One of the best pieces of advice I've heard on writing music is dividing your instruments into four sections: A lead instrument that plays the melody, a backing instrument that provides chords for the melody, a bass instrument that adds lower end harmonies and a steady rhythm, and of course percussion of some sort to accent and drive the mix rhythmically. If you take away one of these, the result will sound empty. This goes for nearly EVERY type of music, solo instrumental pieces excluded (of course there can be multiple instruments doing backing chords or multiple instruments playing melodies at the same time but it's always good to divide them into groups like that). For this concrete mix, I'm sure you'll notice that if you add a bass instrument playing something like eighth notes (that are in the correct key obviously) it will sound a LOT better without even touching the production. Another important tidbit of advice: plagiarize the fuck out of stuff. Seriously, originality is nice and all that, but learning through imitation will make you advance SO much quicker at this point. You can always try to be original after you're confident in your musical abilities. In short, listen to bands with a similar style you're aiming for, try to analyze how each of their instrumental 'groups' sound by themselves and dont be afraid to rip them off just a bit here and there, I won't tell them. Hoping to hear more stuff you make in the future.

[Help] Cant seem to get a good mix going.
Tensei replied to Halt's topic in Music Composition & Production
It's the minor variations that add up like that. Being a perfectionist, when I write an acoustic drum track, I try to do barely any copy+pasting without changing some stuff afterwards. The accents, velocities, even the minor things like ghost notes and the hi-hat variations all change from measure to measure for me. This would make for a drum track consisting of about 100+ patterns on average, and I just don't see the merit of this vs one long pattern. -

^^ I agree with the Swede on this one. "Get up Jordan, the world awaits" sounds great. Love the artwork too. -

Actually whether you work with patterns or not depends on the music you make. I hate having to make an entirely new pattern if I want to make a variation as small as a crash hit instead of a hi-hat, so I just sequence the entire drum track in a single pattern. I can see the merits of loop based songwriting in UNTZ UNTZ TECHNOES tracks though :> -

If you don't plan on making loop-based music, here's what you do, basically you give the whole loop-based pattern system the finger. 1. Set the switch at the top to 'pattern' instead of 'song' 2. Go to channels-> add one-> whatever you need, try BooBass or something, or a VSTi you like. A new icon with the channels name should pop up in the step sequencer. 3. Right click on the channel you just added-> piano roll 4. Start writing! 5. If you want more instruments just repeat step 2-3 Yes it will still loop, but you can write your entire song in this one pattern. -

Uh.. of course you want something metroid specific as a title if it's a SUPER METROID remix album. -

To quote V.I. Lenin; "Learn, learn, and once again, learn" It may seem hard to do now, but the more often you practice it, the easier it will come to you and soon you'll be able to copy the music exactly upon hearing it. :>

In on this, fags.

Whether you have Thor or not doesn't really matter here, I just said it to illustrate you can make a complex multilayered synth patch in Reason, which you don't need. You should be able to make a perfectly fine synth lead for this track with only the subtractor.

Final Fantasy VII : Mako Rebirth Album on FFshrine
Tensei replied to Lightthrower's topic in General Discussion
How does it undermine 'real remixes'? VotL is an album that pretty much follows the OCR standards when it comes to source tune usage, which is awesome, but I know loads of people go "Hurr I like remixes that stick close to the source", so an album like this might appeal more to them. You're making a mistake with the terminology here. The songs that get posted on OCR aren't remixes in the classical sense of the word, they're rearrangements (they're called ReMixes, which is a phrase that was coined here, and I understand that it can be a bit confusing). In fact, I'd say what this girl is doing is closer to the conventional 'remixing' than what we do here, and besides, it's kind of silly to call her out on terminology. That said, I'm pretty sure there's a substantial amount of (aspiring) ReMixers who use VGmusic midis for their mixes, without crediting the original author. -

RARRRrr how dare she get actual positive feedback for doing midi rips. Better complain about it! Seriously, I don't see what the problem here is. There's no copyright infringement or plagiarism as far as I can tell and if people enjoy it, well, let them enjoy it. As for the 'credit the midi authors' comment, should every remixer who uses midis from VGmusic or wherever as a base for their remix have to credit the authors? -
Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business - History
Tensei replied to Geoffrey Taucer's topic in Projects
I don't know yet, I'm open to any suggestions really. I've tried quite a few different approaches but nothing really seems to work (unless I stay really close to the source). It's hard for me because of the shuffle rhythm and the lack of a real lead melody (it's mostly fast, alternating melodic ideas, much like in a classical piece). -

This is indeed terrible news to wake up to. Hope you get better soon, man. -
You're approaching the idea of a synth lead the wrong way if you think you can't come up with anything good because of a lack of samples and refills. A synth lead should not be sampled, it should be synthesized! (as the name might suggest ) I've used Reason for quite a long time and I can tell you that you can achieve GREAT results with only the subtractor, let alone if you dig deeper into the crazy routing possibilities and make a multilayered Sub+Maelstrom hybrid. With the new Thor synth the only real limitation to the sounds you can achieve with Reason is your own skill in sound design. You should take a listen to some of Po's stuff, specifically this remix, which as far as I can tell uses a very similar lead to what you're trying to achieve. That said, I don't know what the issue is with the sitar patch, as far as I can tell it has been programmed pretty much in perfectly western intervals. (I've used it myself at some point, had no issues with it being out of tune at all) Either way, I have to say that despite the production issues this is a very nice and soothing arrangement, so there's definitely potential here.

so.. anybody wanna transcribe somethin for me?

So if you're bad at it, doing it more often will make you better at it (= faster and more accurate) and you won't have to rely on other people to start mixing. - Tensei -
