For orchestral panning (much like the rest of you, I go for a more realistic approach), violin I is the farthest left, followed by violin II, mallets & percussion, flutes, clarinets, horns, oboes (roughly center), bassoons, trombones, trumpets, tubas, violas, basses, cellos (farthest right). This reflects the position of the orchestra in comparison to the listener. I never hard pan these instruments, though - it just doesn't sound right to go past 24-28 in either direction, for me. It's not like the orchestra is playing around the audience or anything. As for electronic or anything like that, I pretty much mirror what Zircon said, although periodically I pan some instruments and counter them with other instruments panned against them, so I'm a little more pan-happy than Zircon .

Haaaa... nice use of Rosalina's voice clips. Missed this one ages ago, but now I'm here to say this is a really cool mix. Short, sweet and to the point. One thing that bugs me a bit is the mixing of the sax - imo it sounds like you went really heavy on the stereo separation, there. Could you center the sax a little bit? It just sounds a little askew to me. Great sound, though. I likes it. Best of luck with the J's. -
Crystal Crazy. One of the best games I've ever played. I couldn't remember the name of that damn game for over a decade, though, so I wasn't able to find anything on it online for the longest time. I still can't play it, either, unless someone knows of a good apple II emulator for the PC?

There's a lot of truth in that statement. I mean, a lot of truth in that statement. Robotic synth 'strings' is a good idea. Let me give you some advice on it - balance the mix for those sections so the volume difference isn't so great. Right now, those parts stick out like crazy because the strings in those sections sound louder than in the rest of the track. They are not, but since they're alone it gives the illusion that they are. Tone them down dynamically so they fit with the soundscape better when they're alone. When they're used as an accompaniment pad with the rest of the music they sound great, so just make them fit the background better when they're exposed and you'll probably be fine. -
Oh hey, I remember you from last year. You posted that track from FFVI. On the positive side, this is miles better than your last track. I can hear the changes in chord structure, and they work pretty well, there. Otherwise, I'm going to mirror what others have said - the talkbox is really annoying when used throughout a track. It's only effective in short bursts. The drums are far too repetitive. For OCR, it's too close to the original. I'm not going to say it's a midi-rip, though - there's quite a bit going on here that makes it different from a regular midi rip. The soloing is neat, and some of the harmonic changes are well done. It's not bad. It's nothing special either, though. Keep working at it.

... I splurged in mah pants a little with the 'Fire Maku, fire maku!' parts. They're just... so... awesome. However, I'm probably alone in that sense. The OCR J's would consider them a little bit cheezy, I suspect. Don't remove them or I'll kill you. The bass synth is awesome. The texture synths are low-fi, but considering the 'vocals' it's strangely fitting. The panning pads are interesting, although I personally think the bleed into themselves a little bit too much for my taste. The track is short, but it doesn't sound too short. In fact, imo it sounds juuuuust right. The source usage is pretty much spot on, so good job there (although I'd re-link to a source - the one you linked is offline). I beg you to submit this to OLR. I mean, I'm begging you to sub this to OLR. Getting it on R:TS would be a good idea, too. It's so good yet the purposeful low-fi sound will not let it pass on OCR, I suspect. It's making me giggle like a madman, though, so I know there's something here that I just love. Like your Laguna/Bike remix, this one is forever going into my file of WIPs that I don't think will pass OCR judgment, but are still incredibly awesome.

Gumshoe's theme. It's the only track in the Phoenix Wright games that I'm familiar with. First of all, I recommend linking to an Mp3 of the track, since Youtube has the funny habit of overcompressing the music, leading to poor quality. I can't tell when the overcompression is due to Youtube or the track. As I said earlier, the track seems very overcompressed. There's just no space for the music to move, at all, so everything sounds the same dynamically. Not only that, the sound often dies in order to introduce more sound, whenever you add new textures to the track. That's not too good - turn off the compressor, use the volume on your mixer (and on the individual tracks, if needed for the sake of balance) and try to get your volume that way. After you've gone as far as you can go without the compressors and limiters, use those tools to increase the volume by a little. The arrangement itself is pretty fun, actually. It could use a little bit of an introduction, because as it is the music just starts out of the blue, which disorients the listener. It could use an ending, as well, since... well, the FO sounds a little lame. Other than that, I like the arrangement aspect of it. The overall EQ needs to focus much less on the highs and more on the mids, there. There's a lot of static in there, which could easily be fixed by lowering the highs, and adding to the mids could give the sound more depth. The sounds used are pretty conservative. It sounds like you took the original soundfiles and rearranged them to make up a new tune. That's not a bad thing, really - I like that effect. Just for an FYI, OCR would not accept it due to that fact, but you never said you wanted it to be an OCR track, anyway, so don't worry about that too much (unless, of course, you wanted it to be an OCR track, in which case now you know ). Overall, good work, and there are some of the areas you could improve. When that's all cleaned up I'm sure others could hear some other places that could use cleaning up, as well. Good luck with it.

My brother is a pretty talented lyricist, so I could send him an e-mail and ask him to churn something out. They tend to be a bit... trippy, though (much like Pink Floyd or the stranger side of Genesis).

AHA! So that's what you look like. I admit your original stuff has a bit more of an interesting flavor than your remixes (although 'Jungle Hell' was pretty darn good, imho). Why did you use GM for the bass in the Undercove_Hobo track?

All monsters have deep pockets - deep enough to hold random shit that's only useful to the player, like potions, gold/gil/GP, weapons crafted specifically for the player, etc. Either pockets, or they stuff them into some orifice on their bodies (which the players diligently search after every single kill they make). Also, running away is an expensive feat - often costing up to 5% of your wealth. That's like tithing every time you want to avoid a conflict. It's generally a flat tax, too, so you lose no matter what, rich or poor.

Stale... I'm talking about the strings, for the most part. They don't have any variation in dynamics, attack or timbre, so they sound mechanical and 'stale'. Bring them up to par, production-wise. My EQ is normally 'flat', so the piercing that I'm hearing periodically is either Youtube or the highs. Because of how strong it is on my headphones I suspect it's the latter. It's not a general 'high' that's on the master track, it's more focused on a few instruments, so you could conceivably just fix the EQ on the offending instruments. I hope that helps a little bit. -
