Somehow I thought it would be a guide on how to produce movie-score-quality orchestral remixes like his 'The Galaxy Awaits' one. The post hasn't been updated in ages & I don't use FL anymore so... Anyway, Urami (why does that name makes me think of Jigoku Shojo?) any progress yet? I would say it also depends on what sound quality you're thinking of getting from your soundfonts/samples. For realistic sounds, VSTi are the best option, but not the most affordable choice I'm afraid...

Uh? I didn't even knew about that game Freespace2. I really thought it was your new rendition of Starship area for Holonic. Anyway, very clean sound, as expected from the sharp advisor! Probably due to my headphones set, bass freq. sounds really proheminent in the soundscape. Song seems generally centered around bass/mid freq. Only complain is, I don't know how to explain it but, the sound seems close (=near). I thought it may eventually be more scattered & distant for an 'outerspace' experience. The high freq melody reminiscent of the begining, which enters at 3:20 balances the song and its onslaught of mid/bass frequencies. Maybe it was done on purpose, but I felt it was introduced a bit late, and instantly overshadowed by the returning of low atmospheric pads. Overall, great ambient track.

Allright everyone, sightseeing is over! Please let the good Dr Dafydd finish the Thanks you for your cooperation.

A. way more friggin difficult! I was playing BC Rearmed, Rockman X6 & Maverick Hunter recently, and for whatever reason (*cough* ..rockman4 project.. *cough*) I decided to replay some oldies. Namely Megaman I, II, IV & Bionic Commando. Well? I died miserably countless times, unable to overcome the enemy onslaught, and the way too savage difficulty for a little kid to handle. But the music was awesome! Today you have 'easy mode', 'tutorial mode', 'I grab-you-by-the-hand-until-you-reach-the-end-of-the-level mode'. Well, you get the picture. Also, games back then were way more expensive than today too! People complain about 60 bucks & DLC, but man, Megaman2 was sold the equvalent of 80€. That 105$ for a 4M cartridge, wtf were they thinking?!

Okay, remixer banner coming up!

Trying to sound like David Hayter at the begining? That would explain why your voice was jacked up not so long ago! This looks like a lot of work, nice personal touch on the dialogue part. I guess the video isn't showcasing all the possibilities of the game yet. Music sounds cool, fits the game allright. Art is fine too. Sometimes it looks like you wanted to put the music forward a little too much. But I can understand that. Anyway, good job & congrats on your prize. ...but stay sharp: the real challenge begin now!

I think by SFpack, everyone meant SFark right? Anyway, you unpack soundfonts archives with SFark. Then use the SFplayer demo integrated in FL, or grab the full version. And most of all, start small as Zephyr suggested. Because trying complex things right off the bat, may discourage you in learning how to remix. Also, I would love to find that one!

KNGI VGM Radio: Nitro Game Injection (Sat 7:30 PM ET) & GameFuel
Dj Mokram replied to KyleJCrb's topic in General Discussion
I've just finished listening to the last two episodes, and it was great. One complain: Man up Kyle! Larry is totally driving the show! Wonderful music of course, and good hosting too, not awkward like most podcasts. Hope it was as fun to do for both of you, as it was for me to listen to. Keep it up guys! Waiting for the next one. -
Reminds me I gave my ps2 with AC 4,5,0 to my little nephew, like you would leave a legacy in the hands of your descendants. The devious child sold it to buy a DS with Diddy Kong Racing ...tragic, TRAGIC!
-
I think our friend Kyle was innocently suggesting being in favor of a MMX remix project. ...wait! Does that mean there has never been such a project going on at OCR?

Really glad to hear some PSO, It brings back memories. It really helps determining how faithfull a remix can be to the source material. In this case it seems close to original, yet has subtle variations. Soundscape is rich & overall the mix sounds clean to me. I dunno if there is yet any mastering work done here? And, I luv the drum work on this one. Nice way to demo Groove Bias. Now I can't wait for both this mix & your kit to come out.

Willrock, J64H & SKR: next time your enter a compo, at least you could have the decency to vote, out of respect for everyone who participated... including ..well ..yourselves. Also, This has got to be the best constructive comment I've ever received on my work, ever. Anyway, good round everyone.

OC ReMix Special on NEW Groove Bias Drum Library! (Now With Freebies)
Dj Mokram replied to zircon's topic in Announcements
'Battery' format would be awesome, but Kontakt is already nice enough. This sounds powerful, yet a lot of fun to use, judging by the b-tester's previews. Hope we'll see the great results next month. Good preset-building to you! -
So, no new updates since thursday? That's too bad, it was quite good so far, despite a little repetitive at times. Also, you really have a knack for drum programming. Anyway, this concept seem to be the best cure against procrastination, so I might try it someday.

OCR01804 - Super Metroid "The Galaxy Awaits"
Dj Mokram replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a Very nice orchestral piece. Ambience is set from the get go. Nutritious piece transports you to an epic journey full of space jumping & metroid busting... But don't forget to freeze 'em with the ice beam before you shoot missiles! Transition at 1:02 is smooth, with the overwhelming sense of menace. At 1:50 the classic melody rolls in and the heroic feeling takes over. The rest is simply beautiful to hear. Overall, great direction & ace composition skills. I know little about technique, so I'll abstain from commenting on that. But in terms of production, Galaxy Awaits sounds way better than any recent official Metroid soundtrack. -
Uh? I don't understand why people stay away from this. Strange... Anyway, to me it's an impressive song, varied and friggin long! But the 7 minutes passed by in a flash, and it was very enjoyable to say the least. As for the critic part: -It needs more EQ on bass frequencies... or a bass player indeed. -It could benefit from a piano melody on top of part at 1:55 -At 4:10 you shouldn't go straight to the epic-rock part. Instead you could add a small melodic portion, with just soundscapes & instruments, but without rythmic/drum at all. -The ending cut is abrupt... but you already know that, don't you? That's it for my advices/critics. I won't be able to help you further, as my knowledge of mastering is still fairly limited. But I'll be following your progress on this one. (Oh, and please consider resizing/changing your image, as it impedes the reading of this thread. Thx!)

Brasero maybe? Well, only problem is that you're dealing with GD-rom, which unfortunately for you were burned on reverse mode... Never heard of a disc-driver that could do this.
-
Horay! It's friday, and as promised, yet another Dynamite Headdy remix to preview! This one is from , one of the early stages of the game, preceding the epic sidescrolling battle against Maruyama. I went for electro this time around ...even though I've never even tried this genre before. EDIT: song's time is up at host. But it will be included in the album!
-
Actually it was mostly Vagrant Story's system, updated a little bit. And the sound FXs were recycled from Vagrant Story (concentration before cating spell, sword & arrow hit, and such...). Logic considering Sakimoto was in charge, but lazy nonetheless...
-
Unfortunately, that may not happen in this round, because I probably won't have time to attend this week. I'll try, but If I can't, see you guys next time.
-
And I'm next in line! Allright, so nice tuning here and there. Now it really reminds me of Megaman Network Transmission. Namely, music from Quickman & Starman stages. This remix needs some more source material! The sound is all over the place, but it's overwhelming. The drum pattern need some cuts & more variations. Also, try to polish your mixing a little bit more. Keep it up.
-
Would you fancy some Stoneman by any chance? It won't be before next month though.
-
After the great hommage that was 'Rearmed', the new next-gen opus looks awesome! With refined mechanics & tri-dimensional levels, it's a whole new way to experience the original concept. If you like grappling things with your mechanical arm too, head over to BioCom HQ! You'll find free preview of the 2009 soundtrack there, plus some BC Rearmed tracks. But also the kick-ass Machinae Supremacy remixes covering classic songs in rock+electro/chiptune style.

Did I Give The Right Answer To An Apsiring Composer?
Dj Mokram replied to TheSnowStorm's topic in General Discussion
I guess it's not a problem strictly related to video game music industry, but rather an issue with society in general. People these days want to arrive fast, become famous, all without making any efforts. Only a few parents still teach their child the value of working hard to get what they want. Seeing as many people still manage to get rich & famous without making a lot of effort, by simply having the right connections, I can understand why yougsters would feel compeled not to waste anytime trying. Society always show you the success, but never really mention the sacrifice required to get there. As for your reaction SnowStorm, that was mature & considerate of you. You were very lucid & patient, when you could have easily burned him. But he's just a kid mixing up his dream and the reality, as kid often do. -
What you should know: -First register at ThaSauce -Check the OHC thread here on OCR, or see here to know when the next one starts -Then when the day arrives, get ready to rumble! -Compose, have fun, & post your remix on the compo's page before the deadline -Join the discussion/listening session at #thasauce on irc.enterthegame.com (if you want to) Well that's about it I think.
