  1. Happy birthday Dunston! May it be full of chicken and waffles. Now go spend the day with Brandon and Erin
  2. I'm partially commenting so I remember to keep an eye on this thread, and partially because this comment reminded me that I found a good resource for music contracts. I could benefit from a more direct template as well though, if anyone has any suggestions on that front, though I'm just starting to get my foot in the door so there's no immediate rush, heh
  3. I *swear* I said this earlier, but I dunno what I was talking about previously. This track is golden, dammit!
  4. Haha, was just about to say that! Pretty cool that Liam and I level up at the same time. Good thing we got the EXP share from Professor Oak's aide. This is my first actual birthday thread, thanks guys! Wanted to say that it means a lot, before I become incoherent
  5. Okey doke, so right off the bat the thing that strikes me is the balancing. It seems like everything is relatively even volume-wise, which has this odd dichotomy of making the track feel very understated while also causing things to fight for the listener's attention It's a common problem, it took me forever to figure out that not everything needs to be consciously heard. Subtlety is key, and while this balancing advice seems like more of a production critique, it actually plays a huge part in arrangement and composition because of how it affects the listeners' focus and in turn their perception of how the piece develops You've also got like 3 things occupying similar space with the piano, chippy lead, and the arpy chordal synth stuff, so everything's fighting for that same frequency space to deepen the issue. At 1:38 you layer that chordal synth with a higher frequency bell, which is GREAT because it helps separate that part out from the rest of the instrumentation by occupying different frequency space. But then the piano comes back in to bridge the momentary frequency gap between the chip and the chordal stuff, and it makes the mid-higher register sound kinda smeary, if you know what I mean (I know I said I was going to give you some arrangement feedback, and I promise I have a point with all this) So yeah, with the track as a whole: the biggest reason it fails to adequately develop because there's no main lead line for the listener to latch onto. With everything balanced the same, everything is heard, but nothing stands out. The lead is, in my opinion, the most important piece of the puzzle - it's what will give a piece it's staying power. Pretty much everything else can be underplayed to some degree, except maybe the bass, because it should be occupying different frequency space (and because of how important the bass is for progressions, which in turn can give a melodic line even more staying power by backing it strongly and/or interestingly) The bass also plays a critical role in song development because it's holding down the base (no pun intended) of the chord, which is the most important part of the implied feel of that chord (no matter how many other tones you have, whether the chord is a triad or a 13th chord). My main suggestion for you is to decide what you want the listener to latch onto, and emphasize that. Then, work the other parts around it, whether that means switching octaves, switching instruments, or slotting the EQ on the other instruments. Hope that's helpful!
  6. This is a track I wrote for the Jempire Story OST, it's a remix of 2 tunes from Phantasy Star Online - (from the Forest in episode 1) and (from the Jungle in episode 2, also one of my favorite game tracks of all time). I'd love to hear what everyone thinks, we're planning a more proper release of the soundtrack in a month or so, so consider this a teaser until then Jempire Story is a free fan-made Spiral Knights RPG, if you want more info, I made a post about it here
  7. I will also accept Casino Night Zone, but only the 1 player version. Preferably in obnoxious a cappella format
  8. Someone pick Hilltop Zone and GO ALL THE WAAAAAAYYYYY!! I already mentioned I'd enter if I have the time in the Sonic CD subforum, but it's not looking good for me on that end of things... Best of luck to all entrants, looking forward to some badass mixes!! Seriously someone please pick Hilltop Zone
  9. Merry dadtimes! You'll make a great pep-pep
  10. Hey guys! Here it is, a game that was crafted as a labor of love in support of Child's Play, a charity that organizes toy drives to children's hospitals. The project was spearheaded by Aaron "Ruby Eclipse" Webber, who is an associate brand manager at Sega. From the site: From my own personal standpoint, I can't stress that part about caffeine NEARLY enough haha. I think you guys will enjoy the OST, it's a combination of original tunes and remixes of popular tracks from Spiral Knights and Phantasy Star Online (some of which you will probably see posted to OCR at some point). I've been working almost non-stop for a while, I wrote about 9 or so tracks in 2-3 weeks. In total, I did about 12 of the 30+ tracks on the OST, alongside my co-composers Kevin Villecco (a good friend of mine who was the one to bring me on the project in the first place) and Jameson Sutton (another good friend who is interning with Alex Brandon). I also collaborated with Hylian Lemon and DjjD on a couple of the tracks, which turned out fantastically (also collaborated with Kevin on one, but he was a huge force for the actual OST in addition to our collaboration). This is still the alpha, and many updates are going to be made, but regardless I'm very proud and excited to be able to put this down as my first game OST, and I'd really appreciate anyone who decides to check it out and give a bit of feedback. I mean come on, it's free (but if you feel so inclined, there's a donate button on the site for Child's Play!)!! The soundtrack will be released more fully soon, but for now you'll just have to play the game
  11. At midnight tonight, we're hittin' Duncan's Toy Chest!!
  12. Today's his frog suit run. Time to get hammered and terrorize pedestrians In a frog suit, if that wasn't clear Happy birthday dude
  13. The main thing is that it looks more professional than a Soundcloud release, at least imo. You'd also reach a different audience, and even if an album is "free" you have the option of offering it for "pay what you want" so people can support you monetarily if they'd like to My first impression with bandcamp is that you wouldn't necessarily be reaching more people, but I dunno, it seems to work out in weird ways where sometimes people won't be aware of your Soundcloud but have found your album on bandcamp. I'm in the process of negotiating a game soundtrack with a dev who sought me out from my album on BC rather than other stuff, so it definitely reaches at least SOME extra people, and you can always link your SC too. I'd look into it dude, these tracks are killer
  14. Wish I could've made it :'( This album is ridiculous. So much inspired melody, awesome progressions, and everything is REALLY structurally tight. My personal favorites at the moment are the title track, Firebrand, and of course, Shoot 'em Down Making my remix was a blast, I loved the track ever since Will showed me way back when. I obviously couldn't quite do the crazy synth modulation that goes on with my SNES samples, so I had to get a little creative with the solos, which ended up extending to meter wankery (which I always love doing). Hope you guys like that one (it's also on SNESology, which I already posted in the SNESology thread here) Everyone needs to check this album out, it's really amazing
  15. Holy shit man, this is rad as hell. I was sold with the Tekken 3 sound clips immediately. Are you planning a bandcamp release? Awesome work dude, REALLY digging this. The first track is like Kubbi if he did more EDM styled stuff (which is saying a lot, because I think a TON of Kubbi's music), the second reminds me of Kavinsky, and the third is bitching though I can't think of anything it reminds me of haha.
  16. Whew, been a while huh? The (very generous) write up on the site says it all, but if for some odd reason you'd rather read it here before clicking the link, this is a remix I did of a tune from Willrock's new album, "Welcome to the New World," releasing through Ubiktune on the 19th (LOOK OUT FOR IT!!). Will's been showing me bits and pieces of the album for a while now, and I can tell you all it's an amazing piece of work, though I think that kind of goes without saying While there's a pretty good amount of original material in this remix, I of course couldn't have done it without some totally bitchin' source material. Check it! Also and Soundcloud direct linksAny feedback is of course always welcome
  17. Shot you a PM Shadic, just wanted to throw my name into the hat for music but also warned you that I'm extremely busy for the time being. I'd love to do some tunes though
  18. Sounds like we'll be doing shots again shortly before
