OCR03276 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Madcap Magma"
jnWake replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I didn't feel this one as much as the people above me sadly... The intro rhytm doesn't really grab me. Maybe I'm too used to the original but I don't feel like the rhythm really works with straight 8ths. The saw bass is also too loud for my tastes. The clean one that comes later is a lot more pleasant. I'm not a fan of the monkey and other noises but they're an interesting idea at least haha. I liked the break at 1:58. It's empty but it works IMO. I felt the lead could've used more reverb or delay in that section though to add more depth. Drum work in this section is also pretty cool. Overall, it's nicely produced but I felt that it was going nowhere. It's probably not my style though since people above me enjoyed it more. -
OCR03277 - Chrono Trigger "stratification"
jnWake replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Everyone said it already but this is pretty good. A somewhat straightforward approach to the song with cool solo-ing on top. I like how the focus seems to be more on the chord progression of the original rather than on the opening notes, it makes it sound refreshing. Guitar playing, as pointed out by everybody above me, is spot on and damn good. If I had to offer some nitpicking, I felt the snare sounded a bit stale sometimes, like if the velocity didn't change much. -
OCR03278 - Super Castlevania IV "Ripples"
jnWake replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Damn the sound design is cool here. Bass sounds awesome, as do the drums with the crushing and whatever effects you applied. Drum writing is also pretty interesting with all those fills. Leads are also very cool but maybe a bit quiet? It seems that drums and bass are the main focus here but I'd like if the leads and other elements were a tad louder too. Anyway, this is a very good song. I'm not familiar with the sources at all but I enjoyed it. Cool mood, awesome samples and fun writing overall. -
I think I'll do some reviews. Probably not gonna reach a high number but every bit helps!

This looks so cool. There should be a OCR Secret Santa Remix edition where people ask for remixes or something like that. That way people like me from countries far away could participate

Golden Sun - Unleash the Alchemy (December 10th WIPs)

That is awesome! GS has an incredible soundtrack so those MIDIs are definitely interesting. -
I thought it was hype. Corrin looks very unique and that Dragon Lunge move seems very cool. Bayonetta was awesome. Looks incredible to play. My biggest surprise was no Wolf. Everything pointed to him returning (Roy and Lucas being DLC, Star Fox Zero) but he didn't. I wonder why...

I think I first heard something from OCR like in 2010 when Serious Monkey Business was released. Probably earlier than that but I'm not sure. I heard some remixes on YouTube and thought they were pretty cool. For some reason I didn't think of joining back then though, not sure why. Anyway, in 2012 I decided I should try using better tools for composing (I had been using Guitar Pro for several years since I didn't plan on recording and producing music myself) and I joined OCR since it seemed like a nice community where I could learn stuff. And it was! I have been a lot less active lately though but I hope I can do more remixes soon...

Mega Man X: The Sigma Fortress Remix Gauntlet 2015
jnWake replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
Ha! Wasn't expecting that lol. It sounds pretty close to the original I played with some differences since some of the notes are hard to hear in the mix The recording of the solo sounds like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/h07hyzqextawu0w/Beetle%20Dopplerganger%20Solo.wav?dl=0. It has some live slopiness in there but it sounds cool. Your lead is interesting sounding though too haha. -

Sounds interesting. I'm not exactly sure how much you can help me timaeus since I recorded those solos live, as in, not MIDI. I guess I could try recording MIDIs for them though. I'll definitely look into making the other instruments like the R. Guitar sound better though. -

Is my WAV ready? I'm not sure haha. -
Tropes vs. Women / #GamerGate Conspiracies
jnWake replied to Brandon Strader's topic in General Discussion
Well they had to make Linkle a different character because Link was already in the game as a male and, IIRC, him being male is actually used in the plot this time! The Killscreen article also has some funny things like "True to form, Linkle dual wields crossbows instead of wielding the usual master sword—ensuring that no one confuses her for being an actual, real, legitimate Hero like Link", when chances are they gave her a crossbow to make her unique gameplay-wise (and I have no idea why crossbows are less hero-like when Link also uses a bow and there are several hero figures that wield bows and not swords). -

It was a fun compo with many good tracks. I dropped out a bit in the last weeks but that's on me. I've shifted my priorities a bit and sadly OCR isn't one of them for now. Still, if anybody coordinates an album of this and is somehow interested in one of the 2 tracks I submitted I'd be happy to polish/submit something. -

Any news on this Brostok? -
I forgot to mention I'd be interested if the chosen director feels like I can participate haha. I wouldn't mind taking a first evo or mid evo too.

I disagree with Mak's observation too, although the fact that many people opted to use vocals this time probably influenced his feeling. Still, we had some very unique songs by Usa this time for example and I like to believe my style isn't that common in OCR, despite using many synths. -
Cool concept! Sounds very interesting. You plan on using sources that fit each starter, like forests for Bulbasaur, or use whatever source the remixers feel like?

Expert isn't that hard but it's pretty boring. You have to skip many stages after being killed by a sucky trap. There are some good stages too but the amount of horrible ones makes it very boring to me.

I like this idea. I enjoy writing transcriptions of stuff so I could help a bit. I could also share MIDIs of my songs if anybody is interested.

It doesn't sound too exciting but maybe something like "Timed Hits" as a reference to the battle system. I tried to look for an official name for the timing system in it but I didn't find anything with a fancier name than timed hits haha. EDIT: Seems they're called "Action Commands" in newer games (Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi), but that sounds even lamer.

I realized very early in the compo I had made a terrible choice with my Maverick. It's a cool theme but it has no melodies so making it recognizable was tough. At least, the cool chords progressions were put to good use! -

Yeah, it was fun. I couldn't really pay much attention to it in the last 3 round set sadly because work and other stuff, but I really enjoyed the other weeks. Plenty of awesome tracks and rickrolls. -

Made another level. It should be hard but fair. It's about falling Thwomps and platforms that act as umbrellas. Name: Under the Thwomp. ID: 7D5F-0000-003F-B84F. I'll try playing the ones here tomorrow.
