  2. Battletoads (the NES version at least) was a pretty damn good looking and good sounding game for its time. Of course we have David Wise, and incredible composer in his own right, to thank for the sound. I wanted to share this because this video has David Wise talking about the process of how the Battletoads music had to be recorded, and the limitations he faced when composing music for the NES (such as how many notes David was limited to). And you also get to see him playing some Battletoads music on the piano at the end

  3. This is what my settings look like in FL right now. The big ones to pay attention to are probably "Multithreaded generator processing," "Multithreaded mixer processing," and Resampling quality. Bump it down to 6-point Hermite if needed, don't know if that's usually a default or not. You'll also benefit from getting a good external audio interface, as that will ease a bit of the load off your CPU for audio processing. Also, check and see what your animation settings are at. Lower them if needed, as that will free up unneeded CPU usage. Finally, unless you're using an SSD for your big samples, that's also probably a huge issue. Streaming stuff off a mechanical hard drive will bring even a supercomputer grinding to a halt, and it's generally better to run your DAW and your samples off separate drives. My C: drive is where I've installed FL Studio (and all my VST plugins), and it's a Samsung 840 SSD. That D: drive is a mechanical hard drive, so it only houses things like short samples (individual drums, breakbeats, etc.) and stems that don't get used often. The E: drive is where I've installed all my EWQL, Kontakt, Omnisphere, UVI, etc. libraries to. It's a Crucial MX200 SSD, and does a fine job keeping those libraries from being a bottleneck.

  4. Many thanks to @Jorito for the amazingly helpful info... turns out it was modsecurity, complaining about any text that included "update" and also had the new "srcset" attribute, which is used for responsive images. I have tweaked the modsec rule to exclude anything that has "src" immediately before "set="... this should fix the problem. Sheesh.

  8. 1. Which version of FL Studio are you using? 2. Is it pirated? 3. What are you using for your audio? (built-in, USB box, etc.) 4. What kind of CPU usage are you seeing? That's going to be a big killer right there. RAM isn't as much of an issue if you're hitting CPU bottleneck. 5. What is your actual CPU? A quad-core processor from five years ago is not going to be anywhere NEAR as efficient as a brand-new one. Clock speed doesn't matter, but CPU efficiency does. 6. You say you're using things like Sampletank, etc. Where are your samples located? Are they on the same drive as your DAW? What speed is that drive? That is also another huge potential bottleneck, and definitely WON'T be solved with another DAW. I'm running the latest version of FL Studio on a new computer with a current-gen 6-core i7 processor, 32 GB of RAM, and using SSDs to stream my Kontakt / EWQL / UVI / Spectrasonics libraries. Zero issues for me, even in a project using several instances of multi-instrument patches. It's incredibly unlikely that the issue actually lies with FL for you -- more likely a combination of your CPU and hard drive.

  9. Personally, I suggest Cubase. In the years I've used it I don't think I've ever had any problems with it. The biggest issue you'll have is having to pay for updates. For example, if you have Cubase Pro 8 and want to update to 8.5(the latest version)? That'll be $50. I'm still using Cubase 5, so for me it would be more like $300. The entry level version of Cubase, 'Elements', is $99 and probably superior to FL Studio's 'Fruity Edition'(also $99). I would mess around with FL Studio before jumping the gun and switching DAWs though. I use it regularly, as Cubase 5 doesn't always meet my needs and is often relegated to recording duty. Try upping your buffer length and maybe using ASIO drivers and see if that helps. I'd hold off on switching until you're absolutely sure, as learning the ins and outs of a new DAW can really mess with the creative process.

  10. Quoting myself, this is exactly what I did. Saw the error again and PM'ed details to djp. Again, same issue, short line of text ending in a smiley that gives an internal server error. Remove the smiley and it works fine.

  13. Put you guys down for SFV. I've already got Beatdrop on Melee and Garrett on 64. DjjD is doing Smash 4, so I'll put you down for Brawl! Please try to get @Tuberz McGee and @Furilas! I'll put you down tentatively for Guilty Gear. If it's not featured, we can figure out another game for you. Definitely want you back this year. Got you down for it. Thanks guys!

  16. I haven't heard your work till now. I gotta say I really enjoy the progressive nature of it. Very cool ideas. I will be up for helping you with mixing, drum programming, and bass. I'll let you take lead and just give you feedback. But I'll be picky to get this right and we'll take this track to the next level. Liberi Fatali is such a critical track for the soundtrack, so its gotta be good. I can reamp your tracks so if you'll keep the dry recordings as well and that can give us options. I could do the same with orchestra, but you should just blend it how you like it. EWQLS should be fine enough but don't commit the ambiance. I'm not sure if they give multi mic placements only with the more expensive libraries. I can give you a lot of criticism on orchestration. In a rock format hinged on sounding contemporary though you really don't need the theory as much as much as an ear for what sounds right because so much gets lost in the mix. Feel free to message me with your thoughts and we can connect.

  18. This is an incredible arrangement. So incredible, that if Capcom did another jazz arrangement album of Mega Man music, I would put this on that album. This is an excellent example of making an already existing track and making it your own. It also sounds great on a technical level. The balancing is perfect, and each instrument is appropriately panned. And changing the time signature was a pretty ballsy risk, but the risk paid off very well. Excellent work.

  19. That's pretty dumb and sweeping to say. "DrumUltimA, congratulations for -- by virtue of choosing to use Auto-Tune -- insulting... yourself?" You have your own personal taste, sure, but ever since T-Pain, Lil Wayne, and others made a successful tool out of transparent use of Auto-Tune, it's been used by many artists on purpose as its own aesthetic. And you can (and will) complain all you'd like, but plenty of people have no problem with it. You're framing it like it's being used here to fool people that the singing was pitch perfect, and you're coming in like "it's an insult to the ear," which is just overly broad, closed-minded, and silly. Your taste. Your loss.

  21. This thread seems like it's got a lot more potential, if there were more people that contributed. I doubt it's /that/ popular of a subject, but then again I'm one of those weird guys who's into the gritty details of theory and comp. If anyone else wants to bring this thread back to life, I think it could be a fun general hangout for some of us music nerds, studying comp and sound design of vidya music. Props to OP as well; I'd never heard the Silver Surfer OST before today. I am a changed man.
