    Chiptunes ...?

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, etc... The term chiptune has been malleable since its inception. IIRC, the term itself was coined when describing sample-based Amiga modules attempting to mimic the sound of SID and other sound chips. So approximitations like that was enough to qualify it as such. But then today you have some purists who would go so far as to say that anything that isn't coming from an authentic chip in real time is not an actual chiptune, which would technically disqualify that which the name was actually initially describing. I don't really like chiptune or chipmusic as a genre name for reasons like those. But then, genres in general are messy fluid things that seldom ever make sense. The early Russian examples use a different method of producing the sounds, but in the end the characteristics and sequencing techniques are much the same. It's a neat example of a kind of inevitable musical convergence derived from technical constraints.

  2. Just commenting so that the review thread will show up next to the remix who inspired this one's title, we had assumed they would be posted in the opposite order!

  3. I have another, totally different WIP coming up. Lots of stuff to do (other projects in particular), but it's coming. Just needed a good kick in the ass and find some inspiration/time! EDIT: I'm still going with the same source (Final Boss from Sonic 3) -- I'm not switching, just wanted to be clear ^^

  6. Sure there is. Here's the excuse: OCR's catalog is primarily comprised of unlicensed fan arrangements. Spotify doesn't allow unlicensed fan arrangements. Our Submission Agreement is an agreement made with people who submit their music to us. It means that artists are okay with whatever distribution channels we decide and are able to pursue, like physical CDs, Soundcloud, or YouTube. The Submission Agreement doesn't protect us from a company like Square Enix or Konami looking at all of the unlicensed Final Fantasy and Castlevania remixes on Spotify and saying "shut it all down." In a perfect world we'd be able to distribute OCR's catalog on every streaming service under the sun, but that's not really the case. OCR is unlicensed fan work. The only way OCR gets on Spotify is if we're able to obtain a license for every track in the catalog. That's just not going to happen; that's literally years of work that is quite honestly not worth the return on investment. I guess we're just plain lazy.

  7. I haven't been here for a while.... a long while. Partly due to work, partly due to being in grad school, but I told myself that one day, I'd get back into OCR'ing. I think you just did it for me with this. ABSOLUTELY EPIC. You have shown me that even the most overplayed theme can have fresh life breathed into it with a little extra spice. You sir, get the playing outside the music box award (sounds cooler than thinking outside the box). WELL DONE!!! Badass. Just plain badass. Did I mention I love this? Okay. Just checking.

  9. I say this is a pretty cool cover. I'm not a listener of metal, but I dont think is metal, more like hard rock.

  11. So the deadline has passed, and we received 2 new WIPs, one from Zyko and one from Bowlerhat that we're eager to see the next version of. If you're a remixer working on the album, go check them out in the project forum and give feedback! We also got a sweet update from Tuberz McGee and DusK will send his WIP on August 6th. If you didn't send in anything yet, consider August 6th your extended deadline New check-in deadline is September 18th, roughly 6 weeks from now. After that we have a final deadline on October 30th, any tracks not finished by that date will be cut. Good to see the activity so far people, keep it coming!

  12. I'm happy to announce my arrangement was used during EVO 2016 for a Super Smash Bros. Melee hype video! I don't know how big the crowd was, but looks over a thousand. Check it out here:
