  1. I legit find it hilarious that a user named Cole Train didn't immediately listen to a jazz album. Just a tasty bit of irony to that, I think. The album as a whole is pretty damn great, by the way - it all comes together in a nice, jazz'd up package that never really breaks the overall atmosphere. If you like jazz, regardless of your feelings about the game music itself, you'll enjoy this album a whole lot. It's rich, the improv is great and overall the performances are tight. I mean, if you like Chronotrigger you'll love this album, too, but that almost goes without saying, at this point.

  2. The People's Remix Competition 338 PRCv13-26 Hello everyone and welcome to the People's Remix Competition! Welcome to the last round of this season. Again this is a free round: no restriction, everything is allowed, also remixing multiple sources in one song. It is even allowed to continue working on a WIP, as long as most of the work is done during this round. It is not allowed to post a song which you did in the past. The only restriction is that most of the time (> 50%) spend on the song is during the upcoming two weeks. Even MIDI rips are allowed, but probably you won't get a first place with that. Based on the poll of the last round, I decided to drop the rule that you have to post the song to ThaSauce. You can upload the song anywhere you want, but I must have a download link. So if you use SoundCloud, don't forget to allow downloads, otherwise your song does not count as an entry or bonus mix. I will still use ThaSauce as a possible place to submit songs. I've made another poll about the setup of the contest for this round. Source: Free Round - (Anything you like) ThaSauce link: Click here to submit It's not necessary to use ThaSauce to participate in this contest. To submit a song at the compo page you can use the ThaSauce page. If you use this, an account is required. If you don't want to use ThaSauce, please upload the song somewhere else and post a download link in this thread. I recommend Soundcloud, don't forget to allow downloads to enable me to upload the song at ThaSauce. I will keep using ThaSauce as the place where all songs are located. If you want to use ThaSauce, the following steps should be done. Click the ThaSauce Link. Click the 'You are not logged in' button in the upper right. Click on 'register' (at the bottom). Read the terms and click 'I agree to these terms'. If you don't agree with them, upload the song somewhere else and post a download link as mentioned above (by doing that, you allow me to upload the song at ThaSauce. Continue the process by filling in your information. You will get a question to confirm that you're not a robot. Here are some possible answers: Name a compo: PRC Who organizes One Hour Compo: Starla Name a ThaSauce subdomain: compo.thasauce.net Who created Mega Mans: Capcom A confirmation mail will be send. There might be some issues with it (meaning that you don't get it), if that is the case, upload the song somewhere else as described above. Once registered, login with your username and password, go to the mentioned page and submit the song. If you want submit two or more songs you can create multiple ThaSauce accounts or upload the song somewhere else and post the download link. After uploadeding your song, please check if your song plays and can be downloaded and played without problems. Only upload MP3 files. PRC instructions The deadline is Tuesday January 3rd 2017 at 10:59 am ThaSauce time (18:00 UTC, 19:00 GMT), check the ThaSauce page for the exact time left. Make sure that the song is uploaded to ThaSauce or that a download link is posted in this thread. You may enter as many mixes as you like and work with as many people as you like on each mix. You are free to create a second ThaSauce account for that if you use ThaSauce, it's needed to be able to upload a second remix. You can also upload it somewhere else and put a download link in this thread. Do not make qualitative comments on an entry until the results of the vote have been posted in this thread. Mixers cannot vote for themselves but if they vote they recieve a free first place vote added onto their score. The winner of this round may select the source for PRC340. The winner of last round, (unknown yet) can participate without restrictions. You can find the full rules list at this page as well. GOOD LUCK! PRC ThaSauce Home Page!

    Winds of Trade

Hi! Long time lurker and occasional contributor (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02441, http://mm25.ocremix.org/ and http://esther.ocremix.org/) here. I'm currently composing for my first video game, a business simulator set during the age of sail called Winds of Trade. The game is a nice mix of mechanics and aesthetics that can be found in games like Port Royale, Transport Tycoon, Heroes of Might and Magic and Mount and Blade. Musically, it's an incredibly fun challenge, as the score demands a certain amount of historical accuracy while fitting and functioning with the gameplay at the same time. Here's one of the tracks I've written som far https://soundcloud.com/fredrikdronen/voyages-of-a-despatch-vessel The game is currently on Steam Greenlight and needs a gentle push to get through http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=811054952 Feel free to check it out, and if you do and like it enough to vote for it to be released, I'm incredibly thankful! - Fredrik

  4. I PMed you a full review. I like! ___ Alright, everyone - hard to believe how time has flown, but here we are: check-in time! So, as the first check in, all we require is a current WIP and acknowledgement that everyone is still on board. Now, I have 20 WIPs out of the 27 claims we have for the album; for those of you who have submitted a WIP already, you are in the clear so just post something here and you'll be fine. For the remaining 7 claims with no WIP, we would like to have something from you in the next two weeks - I'm starting the check in now to give you time to do so. Folks I'm missing WIPs from: @The Nikanoru - Titania (what a jerk) Prominion - Fortuna @Starphoenix - Boss B (you've sent me a sample, so I know you have a WIP you can send me!) @M_Blacki - Sector Y @Ronald Poe - Space Armada @Trev - Bolse @Siolfor the Jackal - Sector Z We ARE still early in the project, so I'm not going for the hatchet right away. If you need a bit more time to finish up a WIP, please PM me and we'll see what we can do. That being said, if we do not hear from you, you'll have two weeks from the check in date to get back to me and/or DS394 or you will be cut from the project. @DS394, @DaMonz, and I are going through all the tracks in the next two weeks or so to make sure all the current WIPs have comprehensive reviews from each of us. A couple of remixers are sending me updated WIPs almost daily; we're all pretty busy these days and I don't want to overload the other directors, so please, if you're going to send us an updated version to review, send us one more update before this time next week and we'll review that. No scary stuff, guys. I am very happy with how all this is turning out; we have a great group of remixers here and I'm especially pleased with all the collaborative work going on here. Kudos to @Pichu's Dad and @M_Blacki for their help the last few weeks; @Jorito is also still available for audio support as well, even though he is now directing the Secret of Mana project - just be patient with him, he's busy! Some other stuff: I'm getting my artist guy to start working on a promotional poster and the album cover art this next quarter. I'm going to try to stay in a space-y theme for the cover art, staying with the Lylat motif of the album itself; however, I've also asked @Etzaen to do some art for the 4 main characters, as we need some representation of the pilots as well as the ships. If anyone wants to submit other art, let me know and we'll see what we can do. I plan to submit this project for OCR approval within the next four months. I have set a goal for the project of 16 complete (not finished) tracks to submit with. I currently have 4 tracks I have labelled complete; if anyone is wondering what I mean by that, a complete track 'is a track with a full framework; one that has a beginning, a middle, and an end that are clearly defined.' This does not mean the structure is set in stone; that would be a finished track, which should only require minor mixing adjustments. There is another goal to get the project to 32 claims. We need 5 more claims to reach this goal; let us know if you want in or know someone who does! And with that.. ALL SHIPS CHECK IN!

  6. And that wraps up the Christmas album for 2016. We ended up with 8 tracks and I'll be sending the package to Dyne shortly with the final art and all the MP3s tagged. Gotta give props to everyone who finished and tried to finish their tracks this year. Thanks for taking part

  8. Boom! This hits hard. Bass might be a tad too much but w/e, all the kids love bass. I find it amusing that "Timesig: 4/4" is a tag.

  9. Is this WIP not reach the end? It can be pretty tough to guage how a lot of what you've got going here affects the track as a whole. Sounds like it trails off at the end, so you're probably not done yet. You're probably aware, but the master of this is VERY quiet. You're likely doing this for the sake of the album (I assume this is for the Lylat System CLEAR album), but on the boards here I do suggest maxing out the volume in Audacity (using the Amplify tool) prior to posting it. It lets people hear whether or not there are issues with the EQ or limiting easier; if it's not amp'd to the maximum, it can be tough to tell whether raising the volume would cause production issues. In this case you're lucky - I can push 14 dBs without issue - but it can be an issue for other tracks, and it's impossible for others to tell without the right tools at hand. I like the overall soundscape, though. Synthwave sounds like a natural fit for this source. You've got to be careful with your instrument blend, though - with so much going on in the background it can be tricky to make the theme/melodies stand out without having them be crowded out by the other instruments. I hear some pulsing from time to time in the theme, so be careful with your mix and be sure the most important elements are coming through clean. The introduction wears its welcome out pretty quickly, and it never feels like it picks up the pace to make up for it. It's tought to guage, though, since this might be an incomplete arrangement; in a 6-7 minute song the introduction could be satisfying, but a 3-4 minute song would suffer greatly because of it. Just as a rule of thumb: 20% is a decent length for an intro, and 25% should be the absolute cap. Anything longer will leave the listener unsatisfied with the rest of the track; long build-ups need large resolutions. This doesn't feel like a grand enough resolution for such a long intro. There are some wrong notes in this arrangement. The passing note in the guitar at 0:18 is a half step too low, and every similar occurence (such as in the orchestra hits, at 0:41 for example) is also the wrong note. Compare to the actual source and listen to the difference - it's pretty stark. If you were using a MIDI for reference, always compare it to the actual source as well, whenever possible. The bass has a few oddities in it, as well. At 1:30 it leaps up a tritone, which sounds pretty... janky. You should avoid leaps like that in the bass in particular, as they're difficult to lead into and out of in a way that doesn't sound disjointed and random. Following that, from 1:32 - 1:34 the bass clashes poorly against the theme, being a half-step higher than what's being played above it. I don't QUITE suggest moving the bass a half step lower, since that would be the exact same note as it was two chords ago, but it does need to be changed to something different. I'm being pretty tough on it, but it does have a lot going for it. I like the soundscape of it, the arrangement has a lot of slick flourishes to keep it interesting and overall the production isn't too bad. I look forward to hearing a more complete version of it.

  10. Good morning! I worked on this from near 3:00 P.M. to around 9:30 pm almost non-stop last night https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1cNg5GTkCUIc1NpNEpLaW1ocGs 80's "Synthbeat" verson of Clipped Wings had landed. I added A LOT of stuff, tried to combine the other two version with this one Even went and used the beginning synth for the current version through-out the song tempo changes all over the place, too tried to get everything equal, seems to be okay you might want to lower your volume for the start, though Classic, you're going to be super happy when you realized how I tied Clipped Wings with SCRAMBLE... It's at the very end, though. Redid the arps a bit at the end, too. Review, please! This might be my best track yet!

  13. Welcome to the voting stage The mixing stage is over. This round has 2 songs. The following people compete against each other Hoboka Overkillius To vote, do the following: Visit the stated ThaSauce Page and listen to all the entries. Scroll to the form at the bottom of the screen. Fill in the entries from first to second. Leave the third box empty. State a reasoning for it. Participants are encouraged to vote and leave feedback. However, they may not vote for themselve, they only have to fill in the first box, they should leave the second and third box empty. They get a free first place if they vote, so it doesn't matter for the results. Non participants are encouraged to vote to decide the winner and leave comments. The winner of last round, DJ Mokram, has a vote that counts twice. Always look in this thread to find out who's the winner of the round after the voting stage instead of only looking at ThaSauce for the results. You have until THIS Friday, December 16th 10:59 am ThaSauce time to vote. The winner may choose the source tune for PRC339. PRC338 will start in a couple of minutes, it's a free round. Check the ThaSauce Page to vote. If anyone have issues voting via ThaSauce you can vote by sending me a PM at Ocremix.

  15. As usual now with Jorito, we get a solid arrangement but with some production issues bringing it down. In this case there's a lot of mud in the mix, obscuring the drums and bass, and instruments competing for space around the low-mids and mids. The mix could've had more air and be crisper and brighter. The wubs worked ok, but had a bit too much of a white noise quality to them. I will agree with Deia that perhaps a slightly harder sidechaining could've helped clear up some bottom end. As previously noted, the shining aspect of this remix is the arrangement, which is creative and flows well, while also going a lot of places in the song's duration. I loved the lead solos. I know Jorito has been working on getting his production game up lately, and when he does he'll get one easy pass after the other. Right now that's not the case but regarding this song the non-ideal mix and master is not that big of a hurdle for the excellent arrangement to overcome. Take our feedback to heart and keep improving! YES

  16. Wow, talk about some tasty texture. I agree that the mixing is a bit off (theme being mixed into the background at moments like 0:34, background elements getting lost behind the bass at 1:50, etc.), but these aren't dealbreakers for me. It would be amazing if the mixing was crisp and clear, but it's okay as it stands. The energy is pretty high on this one. The section with the vocals and pads works very well in breaking up the piece, but otherwise the second half of the piece lasts a bit too long, fatiguing the listener toward the end. The stretch from 1:50 - 3:50 begins to sound the same at the end, as the texture doesn't change that much, the beats remain static and the harmonies are recycled throughout (3:10 - 3:19 being the only break in harmonies). The bass (not the wubby bass, the rhythmic one) repeats that same pattern over and over in that time frame. I'm glad to see Larry post that time stamp, as there is quite a bit of original writing in this one. I agree that the three step bass-line and harmonies help link this to the source in the long stretch without the melody, but it's still a bit of a stretch. The arrangement is well organized and fun to listen to, and it's got just enough for me to connect it to the source. It's a tough call. The production isn't quite enough to bring this down below a YES vote, but that whole second half drones quite a lot, too. I think it's still a pass, but it's a very close call, for me. 17. The track was 3:56-long, so I needed at least 118 seconds of overt source usage somewhere within the piece for the source material to be dominant per the Standards: :03-24, :26-1:11.25, 2:33.5-3:48.5 = 141.25 seconds or 59.8% The 3-note progression of the stuttering beat pattern here (D...B-C, first at :03, more easily heard at :07) is explicitly derived from the beat pattern of the source; it's present and heard in the MSX version, but sounds more obvious in the NES version (:00-:03 of that version). Thanks to that backing pattern, the arrangement's pretty anchored in the source usage, even when the melody's not in play, so it checked out just fine for me. I'm not sure why Jorito linked the SCV4 version of "Vampire Killer," as that pattern's not a part of it. But it is in the MSX version, so his classification of the mix being from that game makes sense. There was some muddy mixing here that ends up obscuring the softer synth lines referencing the "Vampire Killer" melody (e.g. the softer lead synths during :25-:55). I would have liked another pass at the mixing to clarify things, but it wasn't a dealbreaker for me. The speech clip didn't do anything for me, but it was well integrated, especially the original writing and ambiance behind the voice clip. Fun dub-wub elements from 1:48-2:18 leading into that final synth build toward "Vampire Killer" returning at 2:33. At 2:56, I would have liked to have heard something different with the arrangement, which finally happened at 3:11 with the electric guitar doubling the chorus; nice touch there to finish with something high energy and different before the winddown. The electric guitar synth sequencing wasn't the best, but that was almost completely mitigated by layering it with the electrosynth and downplaying the need for it to sound realistic. There could be some production things tightened up, and I see why Chimpa went borderline, but it wasn't a huge enough deal for me to go NO on when the arrangement was strong; the production improvements would just be a "nice to have." I really enjoyed Jorrith's take on a classic theme here! YES

  18. Great source tune, and great concept! I'm loving the sounds used here. I love the spoken breakdown at 1:11, and the soloing at 2:18. The mixing could be better, I feel like better mixing would knock this out of the park. The mix now is overly reverby, with reverb tails overlapping each other and the reverbs need to be high passed so you're not reverbing lows. The instruments compete for frequency space when many things are playing at the same time, everything needs some eq treatment. The kick would have more impact with heavier sidechaining. The snare is very weak. The rest of the percussion sounds pretty good. The instruments generally are somewhat generic, but they are used well. The section from 1:41-2:18 could be sooooo awesome if that growly timbre were mixed to be more full and wide and upfront like a lead, with the teensiest touch of delay (it could move into the background when the solo lead starts). Mastering seems ok, but there's some distortion from 0:30-0:34 when that fast kick pattern plays. Either lighten up on the final limiter, or address the sidechaining in the mix which will help that issue by clearing the soundscape with every kick hit. My other concern is the amount of source use. I hear enough source or chord structure up until 1:11, then 1:11-2:35 is really quite original with no recognizable source use. At 2:35 the chord structure of the original returns. So that's a minute and 25 seconds of zero source in the middle. If I count the rest of the track, there is enough source for me, but let's see what Larry does with his stopwatch. I like this track and I feel like it is over the bar despite my concerns, but if this doesn't pass, take a look at the issues I've brought up. More attention to detail in the mixing of this track will make a huge difference. YES (borderline)
