  1. I'm head-bopping with this one. It's definately happy, in a strangely epic way. Epic-happy? Does that exist? Somehow it does here. Unfortunately things tend to get repetative after a while. Great song to have in the background, but not something to really focus on. Epic-happy indeed.
  2. How trippy. Not a fan of the actual melody, but this mix definately brings a smile to your face. Gets a bit repetative towards the end, some more variation, or some new sounds would have been nice. Cute little mix.
  3. Definately very midi. Some good things; drums are decently programmed, though they still sound pretty meh. The arpeggio thing was a nice touch, though overused. Aside from that, not much going on in terms of arrangement. Combine that with subpar sounds and it's not so great. Sorry.
  4. I agree about voice samples. I might have died a little on the inside if I heard this mix with a ton of voice samples. Overall a decent techno mix, with a great bass, but the melodic synths aren't doing it for me. They don't really pack a punch, and I can't keep interested towards the end of the piece. Drum loops get repetative, along with the rest of the track at the end, more change ups in general would have helped. Key changes were a good start. The track still has some good points, and it's worth a listen, I just would have liked a little more punch to it.
  5. This mix is pretty driving. Very catchy, as well. Bass line that comes in at :29 really works well in this setting. I really liked the part around 2 minutes or so with the rising bell. Panning at the beginning made me a little dizzy when I really tried to listen to it. Overall the song also has a very loud dynamic level that doesn't really change, aside from the very beginning. Some sort of breakdown would have been nice in that regard. Nice job.
  6. Pretty good combination of orchestral elements and techno feel. The melody worked out in the oboe/english horn works very well with the background, and the contrast with the techno really brings out the best in both areas. Ending is a bit ubrupt, just a few more seconds would have made a difference. Overall a good track to keep.
  7. This is a great film score track. I don't know the source well, so listening as is I can picture lots of different scenes that would fit this well. Overall, the track doesn't stand out, but it doesn't intend to, so it's great for what it is. I would like to see more people commenting on this one.
  8. Overall the song is mixed well, but it feels like it just doesn't go anywhere. The wierd thing is that it does move around quite a bit. There are lots of sections, but I feel like I don't get anywhere. Maybe it's the lack of a strong melody, and so the different sections don't feel different thematically? The ending...not a fan. It feels like a mess. Fade-out doesn't help things either. Overall, not a fan, but I can still appreciate what went into the track.
  9. Definately smooth, and not something I would have expected out of Dshu. The track does exactly what it sets out to do, be chillin, be cool, and relax. The theme is a bit to 'asian' cliche for me, but I can forgive that. My biggest beef is with the title somehow making me think of Scooby Doo. Good job.
  10. Bass follows the same progression throughout the mix, and then there's the bell pattern. Adds up for a pretty repetative mix overall. The soundscape, for the most part, is pretty cool. I just got tired of it after a while of the same things over and over. Drop parts out, bring them back in, change up the patterns. Just make more happen if you're going to go on for this long. Nice drumwork though.
  11. Weird track. Some parts of it were quite catchy, and if used a bit more sparingly with other cool melodic/rhythmic ideas would have really stood out, but as things are they get used too much and become repetative. Sounds are FL default, but they don't sound bad and generally work well together. What I heard of the melody (which I'm guessing at, haven't played the old Castlevanias, don't kill me) it sounded too far back. Bring it up more to add more recognition in the piece. Cool ideas, but needs more to stay interesting.
  12. I've had this one for a while, so being familiar I can hopefully make a few more in depth comments. The source is obviously good, hence why there are so many tracks of this theme. That both improves and hurts this particular mix. It helps because the familiarity with the original (and it's awesomeness) automatically raise this one up a few notches. It hurts the mix because this certainly isn't the best mix out there, and I would put it somewhat lower on the list of OCR MM2 dungeon mixes. However, the opening with the the low fuzzy bass starts a good groove, and when the drums come in you know that the track is going to be a fast paced techno. The theme first comes in, and the dropout is sudden but a good contrast. Sound quality isn't great, but it doesn't necesarily bother me that much. The melody stays pretty close to the source, and the techno feel is pretty standard. The bass, when present, does the same thing throughout the track. I think that's what bothers me the most. Something different would have been welcome. Overall, worth a listen, and the source will always remain awesome, but there are better mixes out there of the same theme.
  13. I'm not crazy about punk, but this is well done. Of the flood I've heard so far, it's the one that stands out the most. Worth getting.
  14. Found this just now. No credits whatsoever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i1PCXpv-qU I posted a comment, but I don't know if it went through or not.
  15. Sounds like you're working out the pain problems, which is good. I would definatly recommend stretching before and after playing the instrument. This includes fingers/hands. One exercise I was told to do in methods class is to hold the bow at the top (straight up and down) and 'walk' it down to the bottom with one hand. Go back up to your original position. Feels weird at first, but helps a bit with some fine muscle control. As for recording, I will always recommend Audacity. Free software is great, and this one is pretty decent. As for microphones themselves I'm not too sure as I don't know exactly how a violin set up would be to get the best sound. If you're thinking of keeping it cheap, I can't imagine that anything more than $10 would be worth it. As long as you realize that the sound quality won't be that great (but if you're going through your onboard soundcard, it won't be great anyways) then it should be fine.
  16. Creative intro. Larry's right, it catches your attention and keeps you listening. I will admit to giggling at the gated 'GOOOAAAALLLL' whenever it came in. Sounds aren't the greatest, but I'm able to put that aside as the track works with the sounds it has. The techno style works well with the melody, and the sound clips work surprisingly well. The song wouldn't be the same without them. Some of the entrances on the clips are a bit sudden, however. Maybe a bigger build up to them? Not sure how to fix that. Catchy track that is a good fun listen.
  17. Really awesome to hear another interpretation of this piece. Nice work, really like where you've taken the track. Everything really cranks up the energy, especially the drums and guitar. My favorite section has to be from 2:30ish to 3:10ish . The arpeggiated feel, along with the drop out of the guitar breaks up the action without losing intensity. I feel like the song gets a little long due to the lack of change in the intensity. It's so energetic throughout, I feel like I start to lose focus by the end. It's pretty minor, though. Nice take on the theme overall, good work guys.
  18. Sounds are definately chiptune-esq, but I don't think it's that bad. They work as they are, though a sound update would be very nice. The song is quite catchy, the melody especially. I was able to really enjoy listening to this song, whether it was in the background or I was actively listening to it. Worth getting still.
  19. For an older mix, the sounds are pretty decent. I found nothing that was jarring to the ears. These days, this would certainly be nothing special, but when it first came out, it could definately be appreciated. The mix apparently is very close to source, and it gets repetitious. I wish there had been more variation overall the second time through the theme. The bridge section is pretty nice, good change up. The mix is a nie listen, though more original stuff would have been appreciated.
  20. Not enough "no's" in that post. I think that most people have posted a good amount of the reasons. I used to only post in the songs that really grabbed me. The super amazing ones. However, jumping on the review train has taught me a lot of things. I'm learning more of what to look for in mixes, and am getting better at wording what exactly I like and don't like about them(I still have a long way to go on that one though). Also, being one of the more mediocre mixers here, I know how good it is to get a nice word here or there, or some constructive (I'll say again, constructive) criticism. It shows you how many people really do listen to your track. Reviewing other tracks helps spread the love. If only I could keep on my 2 a day review track...
  21. This is a very pretty piece. I was going to comment at first about the bass sounding a little fake, but by the end I didn't notice at all. Instruments all work well together, and production is quite good. Nice work.
  22. Very creepy. Very nicely done. Would be a great song for a haunted house, movie, etc. My only issue is the trombone sound. Brass is near impossible to get to sound real, and while this is well done, it's still sounding a tad too fake. One minor gripe compared to a really good track, though.
  23. I really liked the intro of the piece a lot. I do think that it unfortunately didn't get much more interesting from there. However, it didn't get that much less interesting, so it's not necessarily a bad thing. There wasn't much of a build-up, which created a feel of absence by the end of the piece. For a first submission, and for being decently old, the mix holds up well, drum loops and all.
