Black_Doom reacted to XTREEMMAK in Sonic 3 (Angel Island Zone Act 2) Angel's Burning Blue Savior
Hey all,
So in light of the recent Sonic Movie, and also considering it’s been a while since I’ve created a Sonic track, I’ve just released a brand new track based again on Sonic 3 and Knuckles, but this time, heavily based on Angel Island Zone Act 2, modeled from the perspective of an Angel Island Resident. It’s slightly dark, but still a very fun listen.
YouTube aside, the song is also available now on
Spotify
YouTube Music
Amazon Music
and more, along with instrumental and alternate mix available through BandCamp.
ENJOY!

Black_Doom got a reaction from djpretzel in OCR04025 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time "To See Like Me"
Wow, just WOW. I'm writing this during my first listen and I'm just about halfway through, but oh my gosh, I know I'm gonna love every second of this masterpiece. I'm a huge sucker for some smooth jazz jams and this is certainly right up my alley! You nailed it with your initial collaboration, Jorik, but this is just beyond any levels of awesome. Really reminded me of another modern classic of videogame music - "Jump Up, Super Star!", which is saying a lot, I think This one is a little less festive, sure, but the attitude is absolutely the same. Jeez, I think I got chills like 100 times while listening to this track - that was scary good. Mind-blowing work by your crew! Keep it up!

Black_Doom got a reaction from Jorito in OCR04012 - Terranigma "Find My Way"
Wow, I'm shocked this track has no reviews yet! Well, I have to say, this is really really good Definitely one of the best folk tracks I've heard in a while. It's a kind of song I could easily associate with a leisure stroll through a town/field/forest, and I guess that makes perfect sense. And, hey, there's accordion - hooo boooy, do I love it! This world really needs more accordion, especially in any piece of VGM, hahah.

Black_Doom got a reaction from Sir_NutS in OCR03578 - Run Saber "Break My Strider"
Wow, this is a super underappreciated track! It's been stuck in my head for the last few days, and I'm really happy about it - super catchy and upbeat retro-flavored goodness! Totally nailed some of the classic WillRock sound here as well, haha. The guitar may be fake, but it certainly adds a lot of charm Absolutely love this remix, keep making awesome stuff!

Black_Doom got a reaction from Jorito in OCR04020 - Terranigma "Will We Meet Again?"
Another solid track from Jorrith! And also amazing work by both collaborators - the vocal work is simply beautiful, and those guitar solos made the chills run down my spine Certainly super authentic 80s sound overall - nice work!

Black_Doom got a reaction from Troyificus in OCR04015 - Terranigma "Royd Rage"
One of the few purely electronic tracks from the album, and certainly one of my personal favorites! I really love dnb, and this is one of the best representatives of the genre on OCR. The flow is just incredibly smooth and energetic. Absolutely fantastic collab right here! Also nice to see Trism on the front page. He's made some nice competition-related stuff and it's cool to see such progress
P.S. I don't know anything about the source track or the game, but for me the title is just a really bad pun and I love it

Black_Doom reacted to Gario in OCR04002 - Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword "Takeyabu Resort Promo Package, 1991"
Man, I hate this arrangement, lol.
I love the fact that it's on OCR - there needs to be more music on here that challenges my tastes.

Black_Doom got a reaction from Mordi in OCR03537 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Seagull Sonata"
I remember listening to this track in the workshop as well, yep. So glad to see it on the front page It's really my new favorite take on a classic tune. The acoustic guitar is especially gorgeous, and the juicy laid-back funky stuff @3:08 is very nice too - gives me creeps every time, in a good way, of course. Love your job here

Black_Doom got a reaction from Mordi in OCR02488 - Donkey Kong Country "A Hint of Blue"
There are a lot of Aquatic Ambience mixes, sure, but this one stands out for me, because it manages to keep the feeling of ambience from the original. The intro is very long, almost quarter of the whole thing, but it's perfect for the mellow, relaxing mood of this mix. And once this track picks up, it becomes even better. Even the guitar doesn't spoil the idle atmosphere here. Also, gotta love that tides + ivories break ot 5:08. This work is sooo sweeeet ans sooo dreamy. Love it.

Black_Doom got a reaction from djpretzel in OCR04000 - Final Fantasy VII "The Cosmofarian"
It's pretty funny that in the write-up for MkVaff's remix of the same theme djp mentioned he was planning to arrange "Cosmo Canyon" at some point, and, well... Here we are It's also very interesting that this is the third (!) djp remix of 2019. I mean, are we going back in time or what Anyways, onto the track itself - I gotta be honest, I'm too far from calling myself a huge reggae fan, but this remix is just ridiculously good. Just like Mike's track I mentioned earlier, this is nowhere near what you can expect from an arrangement of this source tune. And yet it works on every level possible! When I was listening "The Cosmofarian" for the first time, I was initially worried that it was too liberal and I didn't recognize the source at all, but luckily the melody kicked in at 0:25 and it was pretty much there the entire time This is also certainly a classic djp track in that sense that it has a lot of connections with his previous tracks (actually, my very first thought that popped into my mind was "FORTUNA FAVOURS THE FUNK!". Yeah, it was more like a scream, hahaha), but it's something new, fresh and different at the same time! Keep on rocking, Mr. Lloyd

Black_Doom reacted to The Orichalcon in OCR01596 - *YES* Final Fantasy 10 'Twilight of Ivory'
I think this arrangement could be a lot more daring. It's an overall good soundscape. But the instruments are only just barely tacking together to make a nice sound. Minimalistic is an understatement.
I liked the swell at 3:18. Made a shiver run down my back.
Borderline with this one. It could clearly be a lot better. While it sounds good overall, it'd benefit from more work on flushing out the arrangement.
I'm gonna swing with Larry's vote on this one. See what else you can do to it and resubmit it.
NO

Black_Doom reacted to TheVideoGamer in PRC400 - Sonic Special Free Round (Sonic The Hedgehog)
Were not as strict as we would be in MnP. In MnP, pretty much sticking to the source material is the goal. With PRC, interpretation is more valued.
Pretty much Dex has answered your question lol.

Black_Doom reacted to Souperion in Madeline's Ascent [Celeste - B Side Summit (LTW Remix)]
Hey, no problem L.T.W. I looked up the game a bit before responding to this, seems well worth the time. And that OST, though. I'm not much of an authority on the system, but Madeline's Ascent seems pretty complete to me. If you want to get a more experienced ear on it, set the status of this beauty to "ready for review", wait a week or so, and pm a workshop evaluator for a more professional listen. Or just submit it, what have you got to lose?
Keep mixing, this is good stuff!

Nier Automata is pretty deep. FFXIV expansions like Heavensward and Stormblood are also up there.

Black_Doom reacted to avaris in OCR03989 - Chrono Cross "Jupiter Jellie"
Thanks.
The name came from three sources. My daughter (Ellie) was just born and we would watch Cowboy Bebop in the mornings. There is an episode called Jupiter Jazz; and the source is sometimes called Jellyfish Sea.
Jupiter + (Jelly + Ellie) = Jupiter Jellie

Black_Doom reacted to Sindra in New Castlevania Tribute Album Released
Hey OCR crowd! Wanted to quick plug the newest Castlevania tribute album I ran, after last year's X68000 album.
https://smarturl.it/thebelmontadventure
It's what it says on the package; a tribute to the music from the first 2 Gameboy Castlevania games, Adventure and Belmont's Revenge. Again had a fantastic troop of musicians helping me create this album (Snappleman, Alexander Brandon, Viking Guitar, etc.), which I've wanted to do for a little while but never put into motion until earlier this year. It's got a bevy of genres - metal, rock, orchestral, jazzy prog, electronic from a bunch of remix artists and even a few game composers in the mix! I'm really proud of the variety and skill that was brought to this album while covering some of my favorite music from the series.
It's released currently on Bandcamp, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music and more. Proceeds will go to Bat Conservation International to help endangered bat species and their habitats; because you can't have a Castlevania without bats!

Black_Doom reacted to JohnStacy in Halloween-Themed VGM Album
https://thegamebrass.bandcamp.com/album/brasslevania-a-tribute-to-the-video-game-macabre
Hello! I'm JohnStacy. You may know me from such places as this website and discord. You may also know me as a session brass player who plays for various video game soundtracks and soundtrack arrange albums. Today I come to you with an album from a group I'm involved in, that will release next week and is available for preorder right now.
This album is Brasslevania, a fully licensed arrangement album. This includes music from several Castlevania games, Luigi's Mansion, Deltarune, and others. The description of the album does it justice, so I'll just paste that here:
The Game Brass have teamed up again with arranger Thomas Kresge to bring you "Brasslevania: A Tribute to the Video Game Macabre"! Featuring some of the finest ghost, horror, and skeleton-themed music in video games, Brasslevania includes over 20 tracks from such classics as Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario World, Final Fantasy, Pokémon, Deltarune, Castlevania, Grim Fandango, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Celeste, and more. For this album, the quintet has expanded to a 9-piece brass ensemble and invited an array of special guests, including Mariachi Entertainment System, to the party. Equal parts spine-chilling, terrifying, and cadaverous, Brasslevania brings you the biggest Game Brass sound you've heard yet!
I played french horn on this album, and am featured on a few tracks (mainly Voyager, Life is Beautiful, and The Grim Fandango Suite). The other guys who played are all my friends and we had a blast putting this together.
On behalf of the Game Brass, I hope you enjoy Brasslevania: A Tribute to the Video Game Macabre!
