Mega Man: The Wily Castle Remix Gauntlet 2013

Recommended Posts

Prayer for IDOLA ~ Kobayashi's Final Descent - For some reason the bass felt offkey versus the square arp. The track feels texturally awkward to me, at least until 0:52 where things get more structured. The square lead at 1:15~1:56 felt dissonant in the non-jazzy way. Tbh, I don't hear a super clear direction in this, but there's definitely variety in this, and it was a good attempt at complex dissonance.

It was directly trying to emulate the music from Phantasy Star Online games. I started running into problems when it came to finding ways to fit the source in various spots. I do agree there are a few funky parts and that at times it gets more dissonant than maybe it needs to be. Thanks for the review man. :)

Also haha thanks for noticing the square arp. I thought I was going crazy when I thought it was off-key because noone had been mentioning that it sounded off so I thought I maybe got away with it just being super freaking dissonant there. Its weird when you write super dissonantly its super easy to have the wrong tonal center in your head for a chord and then you write a melody and then you'll even think its working but then you come back to it and are like "wtf did I do"

Shadix, I actually felt very odd when listening to your track, because your attempt was amazing... you totally nailed that PSO feel! But on the other side of the coin, I couldn't actually hear the source tunes anywhere in there. Maybe I'm just not listening hard enough?

You don't have a break down handy, do you?

Yeah, I totally get what kind of idea you were going for. It's really hard to do this kind of thing, and I have trouble with it too sometimes. I occasionally rewatch

for advice and ideas on "effective harsh dissonance".

Oh, and get better, Trism!

Wait wait wait are you #srb2 Arrow? :o

Yes it was pretty liberal arrangement.

0 - 20 : Bassline has a variation of the MM8 Wily arp in the piano

31 - 51 : Gravity Man's main melody

53: Proto Man's theme is the pad in the background, the string melodies are playing a variation of the guitarish melody in MM8 Wily.

1:14 - another wily arp. The harsh square melody Timaeus mentioned.

1:35 - Based on the breakdown of Gravity Man.

1:55 - Section 2 from Gravity Man

2:20 - The brass hits from the intro to Gravity Man

2:44 - Cameo from the final form of Falz from PSO. ~

(2:00)

3:04 Wily MM8, the last melody before the song loops.

3:15 Wily MM8

Then awkward loop.

For those who don't know in PSO the songs transition between a chill ambient piece and a upbeat crazy piece depending on whether you are in combat. 1:35 was written a the part 1 -> part 2 transition.

Ascent - Good effort! The orchestra comes off rather fake, but doing something like this with fake samples is going to be tough to be convincing anyways. Even if it's only a minute. :<

Thanks, man. :)

I had no clue what I was doing. I've just wanted to try orchestral for the longest.

So, I just took my best guess and dove right in. :P

I ran out of ideas after that last section, hence the abrupt end.

:<

^ (That emoticon is hilarious!)

Thanks for the reviews and comments, man! I really appreciate it! :)

Looking forward to everyone's entries this week!

Cash: Countermelody at :20 sounds like its is in the same freq range as the lead, try and eq or maybe even knock it down an octave to separate the frequencies out and clean up the mix. Some nice automation happening in the leads. Dug the ending.

Thanks for the review, dude! I definitely hear the clashing after listening to it again, still working on that in all of my music. The ending was inspired by djpreztel's ending to his Balance and Ruin remix, The Megiddo Brigade. I liked how he ended it with a triangle instead of a fade out.

Dancin' Through Club Wily - Nice dynamic reso saws. Pretty good funk-ish bass. I liked the lead, aside from how it gets rather resonant in the mids whenever it reaches low cutoffs. Drums could come through more. Texturally, it comes off as a bit sparse sometimes, and there are times when the rhythmic choice on the percussion was a bit confusing. The bass was probably the highest quality sound from that song, IMO. Nice and thick.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Do you have a specific time stamp for where the textures are sparse, and also when the percussion choice is confusing?

As for the bass, I used a soundfont called Kik-Arse Bass, which I found on DarkeSword's soundfont website. I use that soundfont for a lot of my basses.

I definitely plan to expand on this (and learn a thing or two about production (and get better samples (and...cetera))), but I'm really excited by what I did manage to get done. Subbed. And now passing out.

Lyrics for round 8:

Intro

Chaos envelopes the whole world,

Carnage, metallically unfurled

Robots, mindless slaves to a lie

Shackled, to a fiend that must die

(Quickman's theme part 1)

Here we are

Through all the fighting come at last

When we find you

Your judgement will be fast

When we come

we will drag you from your shell

And next time I'll see you

will be in hell

(Wiley's theme)

Here we stand together

It's time to do finish this

For now and ever

Wily, now your time has come

there's nowhere to hide for you

there's nowhere to run

(Chorus build up)

Concrete Men

are coming after you

There's nowhere else to go

There's nothing left to do

And we

will finish this tonight

cause no matter how you try

You will not win this fight

Breakdown:

We have got to try

because Wily's got to die

We had better try

because Wily's gonna die

Verse 2:

We will massacre

With our attacks so skilled and deft

And the evil doctor

is the only one that's left

With my lightning speed

and protoman's brutal plasma cannon

Get down on your knees

If you want to die less painfully

(Wily's theme)

Now we stand together

We're here to do finish this

For now and ever

Wily, now your time has come

there's nowhere to hide for you

there's nowhere to run

CHORUS X 2

I can't wait to hear everybody's mix. I hope you enjoy what I have in store for this week. (*rubs hands together) mwahahaha!

Yep, that's me. As far as "community I hang out with the most online and in RL", I transferred over to these parts about 7 or 8 years ago.

Thanks a bunch for that. Yeah, that was a really liberal arrangement alright, but with the breakdown sitting in front of me, I was able to pick out enough of the source that I now feel comfortable voting for this in my top 3 this week.
