If all games could be bought through steam, I would use nothing else. The only, ONLY limitation is that you need an internet connection to play your games; you've got to be at least 60 years old to not have broadband by now.

*NO* Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance 'Chapel Gymnopodie'
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Beautiful left hand chords, even though they don't do much else. I did enjoy the arrangement, its quite liberal but after checkin larry's breakdown I'm cool that there's enough overall usage. It is very simple melodically, but the harmony choices were great for the style and you explained your choices coherently. I do have issues with the recording quality though. On the one hand its too quiet and noisy. On the other hand the lower quality in some way adds to this colour of the tone. I get the feeling that if this were a crisp and dry recording, it perhaps wouldn't sound the way it does, which is imo quite nice to listen to. I guess the only major issue I have is the volume, but as Jimmy mentioned, just boosting the volume adds noise which we definitely don't want. My suggestion would be, if you have the original wav, normalise it properly and resub. I actually like the odd boxy-reverb colour of the sound that the (hate to say it) poor recording technique has created, but there's no excuse for low encoding. NO resub plz (We have a steinway at the uni, lovely things) -
OCR02038 - *YES* Final Fantasy 4 'The Might of Baron'
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
So this is epic. That has got to be the longest pick slide I've ever heard in the intro. I've just played and completed this game for the first time over the last week and its easily in my top 5 games ever, and this remix just filled me with many joyous/epic memories. Great arrangement, and i know mixing guitar with orchestral elements is very easy to get wrong production-wise, but this does an admirable job. Very inventive theme treatment, submit more remixes. YES -
I wouldn't buy logic for its sheet music capabilities, they're fairly limited compared to just inputting via the piano roll.

Funny that it was a campaign to be a judge.

OCR01773 - Banjo-Kazooie "Malevolent Mansion"

This is damn sweet. I recently completed this game again for fun, and I never would've pictured this working at all, nice job. -
Why is this site so scared of actually reviewing songs?
Fishy replied to jfs_87's topic in General Discussion
Harr. I seem to like the majority of it. People only remix their favourite music, so you can usually tell that whoever they are, they enjoy making what they're making, and that tends to carry over to the listening experience. I don't think I've said to myself "I have something against this music", there's usually something positive you can focus on somewhere. On topic: I only review stuff I enjoy because I can be bothered to post in every thread saying I don't really have an opinion of this/I don't like it. -
3) Well bootcamp requires a boot disc as you have to restart it a few times during install. I don't see how you can use an iso as a boot disc. Why not just buy a dvd and burn it to disc? That wouldn't really take long.

I never used vista, not even on someone else's computer. It got so many bad reviews, and all my games/programs worked fine on xp so I never saw any reason to ever swap. Reading about the changes planned for 7, it looks like they're approaching it in the right way and the screens look nice. Musically speaking; I think the only thing that could pry OSX from me as a *main* audio workstation OS is if pro tools discontinued its mac version. Still, if 7 is good for whatever next gen gaming that comes out then that's all I really care about for a windows partition. Windows looks like its always going to be the main os for gaming.

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Snowboardin' Sonic'
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
This has a really nice old school quality to it. Great solo's and lead sounds in general. Arrangement is easily passable, don't see any problems there at all. I agree that the drums could use a bit more punch, but they were the only element that had any notable negative effect for me. As someone else brought up, the bass isn't as full as it could be either. The sound on the leads is awesome, especially at 1:32. Don't touch them imo. Hate to copy paste zyko but: Punchier drums and a groovier bass and this is fine for me. I just spoke to will just now and he sounds enthusiastic about resub'ing. This is fairly strong to begin with and will's more recent stuff is even stronger, so I'm happy to give this a conditional too. YES Conditional on drums/bass -
Well maybe if someone had brought this up before the show I could have been the official presence .

I can see how small intimate ensemble is way harder to pull off with some samples, but the problem with double standards is that if you make even one exception, people will start wanting more. btw, really looking forward to the resub

Speaking of which, wut happened to my copy? -
I tried to play shadow hearts and as far as I can remember it was terribly put together. Really bad direction/cutscenes, laughable voice-over. I didn't enjoy it at all. I found the opening cut scene here: All the fanboys/girls saying how great it is in the comments so but maybe its just me.

Do you guys recreate the song first?
Fishy replied to Incronaut's topic in Music Composition & Production
Sometimes I start out with a cover style approach and then deviate, but usually I have an idea of how I want to change the song style or approach before I start. -
I agree, someone do this.

OCR01839 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'City Corner Lullaby'
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm a kazoo. Very intimate sound but it is quite dry, would've liked a bit more reverb. The arrangement adds a lot harmonically as opposed to melodically, so it didn't find it to be particularly conservative. Definitely fits the word lullaby. Really not sure why larry be NO'in it up. Strong arrangement and nice sound. YES -
I can see the potentially bad issues brought up, but the only one that comes close to annoying me or ruining the concept is the chant near the end, and thats over in a few seconds. Other then that I think this is pretty enjoyable. I know the sequencing could have been better for the solo spots, but it didn't become grating to me and probably wouldn't to most people. The ending was abrupt but again, not a deal breaker imo. The track is still enjoyable and works as is. I wouldn't complain if the mixer wanted to fix a few things, but I wouldn't mind passing it in this form. Arrangement is obviously a pass. 2:18 to 3:08 in particular is very strong and really emotive, reminds me of a certain other remixer. YES Might be worth asking Jake if he does want to fix up a few things?

That was really cool, need more performances of game stuff like this. EDI: more from them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBoZSkDT3Do&feature=related

OCR01788 - *YES* Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 'No Hope'
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Oooh ,the source for this is gorgeous. Quite via purifico. Intro is pretty sweet. lo-fi drums at 0:35 worked well. I quite enjoyed the weird timing, just sounds like the broken chord in triplets and the melody in 4/4. Very cool warbly bass sound. Things get nice and full at 2:19 with the new sounds. Horrible chord at 2:24, thats just doesn't work, however you look at it. Got a sweet little breakdown going on at 2:38, awesome glitching. Okay so that rapping was brief, and kinda muffled, but other then that is fits great, and the pitch effects gave them a welcome power. Everything from 3:37 onwards just took the mix to the next level and the source fits like a glove. Even got some bit crushing for the outro. I don't think that the vocal processing had that much of a negative effect but it could use a bit of a clean up. Interpretation and the majority of the production was great. I'd say just a bit of cleaning up, and then fix that bizarre chord and we're good to go. YES Conditional: Fix chord and clean up the vocals a bit -
Have you ever cried because a song was THAT good?
Fishy replied to LuketheXjesse's topic in General Discussion
Oh shi... Any of the Pan's Labryth soundtrack, but the lullaby in particular. That movie was so perfect I vowed never to see it again because I have such a perfect memory of it.
