  2. Seriously awesome dude. bLiNd's not looking so untouchable now
  3. Wow, some really nice production here. That electric guitar sounds perfect! You've obviously got the production sorted on this one, although I'd work on the arrangement a lot more. There are a few neat ideas in there, but I think you should work in a lot more, as it sounds very close to the source at the moment. Some of the drum programming was a bit basic as well - that's definitely something you can improve. Looking forward to hearing more from you, this is a great start
  4. Hey, welcome Street Fighter is a pretty big deal on OCR, although I've never played it myself (what?!) Seems like you're pretty new to mixing, so I won't give you a big critique, I'll just say keep improving, listening and reading stuff about music production. Pretty crazy hardcore dance synths at the end there... fun
  5. No feedback yet so here we go... Not sure of the source but it sounds pretty strong. Definitely a good genre choice with DnB, however both the drums and bass lack a punch, as well as being largely unimaginative in terms of fills, hats, crashes... is that the same drum loop for the whole thing? Gotta do better than that I'm afraid! It seems like a pretty solid arrangement (intro could build up to the drop a lot better though), it's just being held back by production and drum programming. Dunno if you heard Nutritious' Cave Story remix that was on here a couple of months ago (hopefully be posted soon, he's removed the WIP file), but that was some amazing DnB. Keep improving your production, and have a go at writing some drum beats as well.
  6. I like your attitude, so here we go! First off, great , and an interesting direction with the remix. I think a slower tempo works well with it, although perhaps not quite this slow. Have you tried 90-100 BPM? 80 just feels too sluggish.Wasn't expecting too much after that really weak synth intro (lose that imo, or at least make that sound better!), but it gets much better after that. BUT WAIT! What's the deal with all this reverb? It's like I'm listening from across a field or something! You have to sort that out otherwise it's really hard to tell what needs improving when it's masked under a sopping wet layer of reverb. Don't know what you did to it, but undo it so the instruments come forward, and you can really infuse some emotion into this 80s power ballad style that you've got going on. Arrangement wise, it drags on a bit, probably due to the tempo, but I'd also expect a much quieter section before the 3rd and final chorus really hits. An orchestral string backing there would be a stirring addition to it as well. Nice job so far, the reverb's the main issue so sort that out and repost it
  7. This song sounds SO FAMILIAR! Sounds a bit like http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02117/ - although it's a pretty common chord progression, so it could be something else. So yeah the remix... I actually find it very pleasant, and as a whole it comes together very nicely. There's just something about it I can't place that I think is holding it back. I think overall it needs "something more" to pass the bar at OCR. The synths could be a little more complex to give them more depth, and the bass and drums could be tweaked to be a lot more interesting. There are a lot of extra touches you could add to this to really bring it up a notch. It's pleasing as it is, but it's not standing out for me just yet. Nevertheless, it's a solid base to build on, and your mixing seems very good - all the sounds you have used gel nicely and form a clear cohesive sound, which is nice to hear. Keep going back and adding things to give it more depth and I'm sure it'll really shine.
  8. Hey man, I posted in your thread on the workshop forums with some advice on this, but just posting this here to say what it reminds me of at the moment: ...not bad, just sounds a bit dated.NEEDS EFFECTS! Hit me up on IRC if you want
  9. Humanising drums is down to velocities, "swing", and lots of nice fills and interesting notes. Sounds like your drum writing is good in this, but the velocities aren't changed enough, and it's very mechanical, as well as lacking some polish on the production side. As for the production on the remix in general, it just sounds like it needs a load of effects and stuff, as well as some "more interesting" synths. Play around with your synth vst and really get to know it INTIMATELY. Even if your synth vst sucks (although IIRC you have a decent one), some plugins like chorus and phasing stuff can make them sound great, as well as reverb and delay effects.
  10. Whoooooa this remix sounds awesome so far! I can see what you mean about the kick though. Also, that shredding at the start sounds a bit too machine-gunny for my liking. I'm not an expert in this genre at all, but when I'm mixing I always keep my kick separate from everything else on the percussion side of things, and get that sounding right by itself. Sometimes I have the snare separate too, if I'm going for really punchy snare sounds, however I find it to be more useful for EQ rather than compression. When using your compressors: Decrease the threshold to reduce the dynamics of the sound (the difference between quiet and loud), increase it to preserve more of the original character. Very short attacks on compressors (<5ms) mean you have almost no audible parts where it's not active. For kicks and snares, I tend to use around 30-50ms to give a very short punch at the start of the sample before the compressor hits the wave and squashes it. Much longer than that I don't use so I have no comment on that. The knee is a measure of how harsh the compression is - a very low knee (say 0-1db) will compress sounds very harshly when activated, but a higher one will ease into the compression more steadily as the threshold is reached, providing a smoother transition into the compressed sound. Adjust the ratio to determine how much the sound above the threshold is reduced. 3:1 divides it by 3, etc. Gain adds some volume post-processing, so adjust this for overall loudness. To make a kick sound super-loud and punchy, go for a high ratio (3 or 4:1), with an attack around 40ms, and output gain so that it's just under 0db at its peak. Then add an EQ somewhere in your effects chain (before would probably be best) and manually adjust that to how you want your kick to sound. Overall, I'd say remove that master loudness thing and mix your song first until it sounds good. Then add the loudener. It's hard to hear what's wrong if it's got a max loudness preset on the master channel, because it's likely that that preset is a combination of multiband compressors and limiters that are masking the real effects of the individual tracks. Good luck, looking forward to hearing a finished version soon
  11. Is Jetson your real last name? I hope so, that's awesome! Anyway, the mix... This is a really fun concept for a remix, and you've pulled it off surprisingly well! The recording is holding it back though - there are a lot of pops on the mic (especially the beatbox track), and some clipping too when things get busy. As far as arrangement goes, it's a bit too coverish, so likely wouldn't get accepted to OCR in its current state. You should think about adding your own sections and putting a new spin on the theme in addition to changing the style if it's your goal to get posted. Again though, it's well worth trying this concept because I don't think there's anything else like it on OCR (someone correct me if I'm wrong!)
  12. Hey, welcome to OCR! I checked out a few of those songs... very nice indeed, especially serenade of water and the main theme of Zelda. Just a reminder though - you're only supposed to post things that you have made yourself. Tell your friend to post over here and I'm sure the community will love it!
  13. Alright wolfwater, let's see here... Pretty cool sounding synth arps, but it soon becomes hard to discern the beat of this. Some parts sound like they go out of time or miss a beat then come back - definitely needs some drums in there so we can tell what's going on more clearly. Also gets really repetitive, so trim out a lot of it and mix it up some more.
  14. It's a cool start, but once that trumpet came in I wasn't feeling it! Poor choice of lead there, switch it for something a bit more fitting, or a better sample. The piano right at the start could use a bit more expression and dynamics, as well as being less quantised to give it the more human feel. Drums are pretty well sequenced, but try beefing them up a bit! Could be my personal taste, but I was really looking forward to some more of a low end from the percussion, like a timpani or something. Nice breakdown in the middle, and it's a good build up towards the end, although try and change up the ending to make it even more dramatic if you can - faster tempo maybe? It feels like it drags a little after the breakdown. Few things to work on there, but keep at it
  15. CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE ...I'm in ur forums, takin ur acronyms Late to the party, but happy birthday! His name was Jonathan Paulsen. His name was Jonathan Paulsen. His name...
  16. I find that before you spend any money, make sure you've reached the limitations of your current setup. You've only just started, so play around with REAPER, get to know it, and see which parts are holding you back. You'll probably find that in a month or 2 you'll have a better idea of where you want to go, and what you need to accomplish that. Spending money blindly on gear won't help you, and may even discourage you if you try to move too fast and regret purchases! I started with Garageband, got as far as I could with that (after starting out about as musical as you've described yourself), then moved on to Ableton Live after about 6 months, before I started seriously thinking about remixing. I still don't use a MIDI input device - just my computer keyboard! It's a long process, but stick with it, and don't try to go too far too fast. Quoting for emphasis
  17. Just gonna chime in here and say I really like this. It's relaxing, which was a change of pace for me as I usually go for higher tempo, more energetic stuff, but after a couple of listens I'm nodding off (in a good way). If I had any crits, it'd be that at times maybe it's too slow moving, and there's not too much going on in the soundscape, however that's probably just a personal taste thing. Some of the drum sounds sound a little far back as well, especially from 0:51-1:00. I get what you're trying to do there, it just sounds a bit odd. The verb on the violin after that is a little much I reckon, but it might be due to a bad sample so you need it that high. Try turning it down a touch, or maybe add a bit more chorus as well. Not sure on that - and I'm being super-critical anyway! No problem with the first transition, in fact it's my favourite part! The second one works well, too. Nice work! Those organ chords sound great. Wacky idea instead of a fade-out: have the DELELELELE wild Pokémon alarm go off, followed by the zubat screech! A surefire way to wake up anyone who fell asleep. Or not. Good luck with the sub
  18. I only caught the end of the voting last night (perhaps thankfully...), and it's always fun to guess who the countries are going to give the top marks to. Usually a politically sympathetic move, like Portugal giving Spain top marks, and all the ex-soviet countries sticking together. Anyway, the singing in English thing really bothers me. I mean sure, everyone understands English in Europe these days, but in a competition that's supposed to show off each country's individuality (I'm guessing here, as it's seen as a total joke nowadays), I'm surprised more countries don't sing in their native tongue. Also, when singing in English as a second language, artists tend to fall into the same tired old rhyming cliches, and it sounds terrible to a native English speaker. At least if they're being cheesy and writing terrible lyrics (99% chance of this) then they'll be speaking Slovenian or something, so most people won't notice. Then again, if we don't understand the lyrics, we might focus more on the music... *shudder*
  19. Well bumped, sir. I listened to the soundtrack again yesterday, and there are a few very remixable sources in there, despite a lot of it being, as you say, more of a sweeping, atmospheric score. The Main Title Theme, Floyd Race, Mizar's Palace, Space Travel and SS Anubis themes all have great potential. I'd have a go myself, but I'm really busy atm. Maybe soon
  20. Have a good one mate, consider that track I sent you a birthday present
  21. That's probably the most relevant and concise thing I've heard regarding this issue. Well worth remembering.
