The lag shouldn't be too bad. When I play Strikers vs. people in Europe there is barely any lag at all (unless someone just has a shitty connection). This is godly.

In most games I'd have a laundry list of things to be angry about with such a barebones online mode.

But this is Smash Bros, and I don't need anything more than the ability to play with my buds around the world, or be free to smash some random chumps anywhere.

Hell, with Smash, I'm estatic that it's able to do all four characters. Now let's just hope all standard Smash modes are available, and they don't cut any heavily animated levels.

I'm kinda glad there's the whole anonymous thing going on for the play with strangers. It's bad enough that most of the new Smashers I meet assume they're good just because they play. This way now I don't have a face to punch in since they won't be right next to me spouting off about how good they think they are.

A rating server isn't hard to manage. Would work just like an RTS. Do 1v1s, and 2v2s. Finding matches pairs people off. This way you can play people from all over competitively and quickly.

I'm glad about the no ranks. People usually just find a way to exploit it anyway(MPH anyone?), unless they would have made it so friends battle doesn't count as anything.

Hopefully as mentioned, this means no disconnects from people losing.

The online mode is very simple and bare and the lack of leaderboards and rankings kind of takes the competition aspect out of the game. However, I'm just glad the game has Wi-Fi play at all. I'm sure I'll be playing friends the majority of the time anyway.

Leaderboards would actually suck. The people would simply try to disconnect to avoid losing. People don't play fair online, we've seen that too often.
