  1. Note: I post these here largely for people's information, so that folks can see how the academy does business. That being said, if you have a submission, we'd love to hear from you! I am on the program committee for this, so this isn't just me passing along other people's stuff -- this is what I do, alongside my own research and (hopefully soon) teaching. ----------- Call for PapersLudomusicology Study Group of the American Musicological SocietyAMS Vancouver, 3-6 November 2016 Submission Deadline: April 25, 2016.The new AMS Ludomusicology Study Group will host a session at AMS/SMT Vancouver 2016. This year, we welcome abstracts (250 words max) for 20-minute presentations on any aspect of ludomusicology within or beyond digital games. All AMS members, regardless of familiarity with (or previous research of) video games, are welcome to submit and assist us in broadening the scope of ludomusicology. Critical inquiries might include:- What makes play musical, and music playful?- How do the meanings and stakes of performances, choreographies, bodies, and screens play out via sounds and other sensations?- What is ludomusicology anyway, and how can it interface with current ideas in music theory, ethnomusicology, music education, and music therapy? Please send submissions (as Word docs) to gamemusicstudies -at- gmail.com by April 25, 2016. Do not include your name/identifying information in the submission itself. The program committee will send out decisions by May 10, 2016.

  3. We had fun with the Double Dragon callout, and now it's time for the next one! With only one OC ReMix so far, the Quest for Glory series has been lovingly selected by our Patreon sponsor, Dracaemelos! Again, the guidelines: 1. If anyone in the next 6 weeks submits a passable Quest for Glory arrangement (brand new OR old), we'll post it! 2. If we get 5+ solid total tracks by the community by June, we'll aim to release a quick EP soon after, since there are also not many fan arrangement albums for anything in the series. Here's Dracaemelos with some of her personal source tune picks: And here are YouTube playlists of the full soundtracks for all 5 games in the series! And don't forget Dracaemelos's link to the Quest for Glory MIDI archives. Good luck! I'm Larry. What if my submission isn't posted immediately? If it's not a direct post decision from Larry (bypassing the judges panel), the judges will vote on the submission, but skip the normal wait time in appreciation for answering the callout.

  5. Just submitted mine. I am not happy with it, but perhaps one of my descendants will defeat Dracula in time.

  6. I've played and enjoyed (and completed!) Quest for Glory 1 (the VGA version) but strangely enough I must have played without music.. perhaps it was before I got a soundcard (oh man, the ancient times). Got some cool ditties in there for sure.

  7. Dude, I absolutely loved the soundtrack for Bad Piggies. I haven't played it since I got my new phone, but I'm glad someone covered the music from the game. nice job!

  11. It sounds like the video driver's kernel might be corrupted, and an update might not fix that if it doesn't make changes to the kernel itself. I'd try completely uninstalling the video driver, rebooting, then reinstalling it. Make sure you use the one from the vendor's website, not the automatic Windows one. Toolbars frequently go wonky after BSOD's. Specifically the sound icon disappearing is probably not related by my guess. It's possible, though, since modern computers pipe audio through the video connection (HDMI and whatnot).

    Serum problem

Yep; sometimes people like someone else's music because they like the person. I couldn't imagine finding a youtube video of a live concert without people screaming, i.e. they come to the concert for that famous person. So, it can be hard to predict how people "receive" your music. I try not to think about that and just make what I like to make, and if people like it, then great! I stay motivated to write music because it keeps me happy. ----- I have some nice reference mixes that tells me how much bass is too boomy (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02093), how much treble is too piercing (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02177), and what loudness is too loud (https://soundcloud.com/zircon-1/level-bounce). That's what I used to calibrate my headphones, anyways.

    Serum problem

Yeah, this recent comparison sounds hardly any different. I do SEE the difference in the waveform, but as before, I can chalk it up to a phase offset difference. At this point, based on how without the sub oscillator, the difference is even smaller, if I wanted to be even more sure, I would turn off Fruity Limiter and see if that then fixes the problem. If that does, then I would believe that there is a change in amplitude in the sub oscillator that triggers the limiter more heavily, causing a greater duck in volume via overcompression. If that doesn't, then that's an interesting issue you got there. I never really continued using Fruity Limiter, and switched to a soft-knee limiter about 3 years ago because of the overcompression. ----- I actually was aware of the high impedance (a kind of "collective resistance") of my Beyerdynamic DT880s (250 ohms), which led me to realize that I needed to amplify them to get a reasonable volume and frequency response to them. Afterwards, I found that they have good bass relative to my Grado SR-60i's that I owned previously, and they have certainly improved my bass mixing drastically (for instance, something full in bass that would normally take me 8 hours on my previous pair of headphones can take me less than an hour to mix on these). ----- This kind of phase difference can bother people if it's in an exposed context, but if you fill in the soundscape with more elements that encompass the stereo field, the phase difference becomes a minor issue in the big picture, because it sinks beneath the more prominent elements in the soundscape. For instance, I used Serum in writing this remix a few months ago (submitted to OCR already), and I really don't hear any issues with the Serum bass because the soundscape is filled out as much as I could make it. I realize that that explanation of "minor issue in the big picture" is kind of "covering up" what is labeled as an issue, but in my honest opinion, and with all due respect, I don't think people will really care about an issue of this small magnitude. This is something that you honed in on because you know how your mix is supposed to sound, and I think it sounds worse to you because of that. A lot of sound design is quite personal because over time, you get used to how you prefer to move the synth knobs to hear what you want. So, just because you really love how a specific sound that you made turned out doesn't mean that in context, it will make for a final mix that others will find amazing. Similarly, just because you don't like how the sound design seems a little inconsistent on live playback doesn't mean people will suddenly find that to be the major issue that they arbitrarily choose to be the reason they don't like the song. More likely, I think it would be the collective observation that they make of the entire soundscape (the vertical layering), coupled with the length of the song that they choose to hear (the horizontal progression), and the overall arrangement excellence (soundscape + note interplay), that might tell you how much they like or don't like the song.

  17. I had no idea about the FFV: Wind album until the Water album dropped on 4/1/2016. I found the remixes for Wind were fantastic, with Bartz' Theme / Ahead on our Way being the best new (to me, I suppose) remix I've heard in awhile. I was listening to the (April Fool's version) Water album and am like, "wow, this version isn't...great." With it being free, I'm like, "well, I guess I got what I paid for." I know that's cold, but there's a certain level of quality I expect from the remixes here that was totally lacking with this album. I'm soooo thankful that it was a joke and that DarkeSword and crew have the real thing lined up shortly for release!

  18. Yeah, not much to add on the arrangement call here. This is a great cover, but as mentioned, it unfortunately doesn't jive with the OCR arrangement philosoph.y Production wise, man, that kick has a lot of presence here (almost too much?). Would like the lead guitar to have a bit more presence in the forefront of the mix. It's definitely clearly audible, but still feels like it could be more prominent. Would love to hear something from you that's more interpretive as this is a really cool track for sure. NO

  19. Yeah, this is a sweet cover with solid mixing and some good power, and I like the guitar work. But there's very little that distinguishes it from the original song besides richer instrumentation. The tempo and textures are basically the same, and all of the structure and part-writing is the same as the original. There's just nowhere near enough modification of the original song here, including being repetitive and just ending on a loop point with no resolution whatsoever. It's an awesome cover, and I wish we could have both V.G.O. and Girlz Melon represented here, but it falls outside of the arrangement and interpretation standards we're looking for. If there's anything y'all have that's more interpretative and personalized of an approach rather than a super-close cover, definitely submit that; would love to have you officially posted somehow! NO
