  1. Sorry it took so long to get to this, welcome to the workshop! Always good to find some synthwave. I'm not really familiar with the mechanics of the genre, but I like what I'm hearing. I think you might be laying on a little heavy with the higher frequencies of this piece, particularly in the later half of the song. Still some good work here, nice work!
  2. Strings can be tough to work with, keep trying! And this is a lovely. I could think of a number of games/franchises where this would fit right into a sentimental scene. Good effect on the separate moods: the repetitive piano chords and uh, whatever particular percussive instrument makes that shaky noise, to emulate the anxious waiting and the effect of a train, the sweet release of tension, the return of anxiety before parting, and the delicate joy to end on. This is a great piece, Blooming, you ought to be proud. Keep it up!
  3. Whoa, and whoa again. I always love to see Ridley's theme reworked, and this is... bestial. Them drums, though. I love the distorted, almost chippy elements of the intro before they give way to the pounding percussion and your distorted synthesizers (of which I am envious and wish I could make my guitar samples sound as good as.) Your subtle (and not so subtle) variations on the oh-so-simple and ravenous source are excellent, I can just hear the roars and missile explosions of a good boss fight. Good work here!
  4. Slick and smooth synths, somnolent bass, then the rise of chill percussion to consummate a mix that gently glides across the auditory landscape. Except when it suddenly picks up at 2:36. Love that unexpected turn. Very good atmosphere and mood, the first half of this sounds like it belongs on the OCR album "Esther's Dream's." Actually, we'll just throw the whole thing in. Furthermore, the second half reminds me somewhat of some pieces from Tales of Symphonia. Nice work, Brink, nice work.
  5. More Goonies! This is a nice piece of work here, everything blends nicely together. Go get yourself a pizza, you've earned it.
  6. Thanks, Randomcity! I've been trying to make my strings sound better. I use Eastwest's Symphonic Orchestra, which has some good samples, but clearly need more attention. Flex looks awesome, where was it when I started on FL last summer? I remember when I heard "Never Forget" in Halo 3, right at the menu screen. Gave me chills. It was a lot of fun to work with. What kind of approach are you taking on it, Randomcity? I think we all need more Halo mixes in our day. I've already posted a "finished" copy of this remix on my collab channel, but I still appreciate the feedback for future projects. Here it is in case anyone's interested.
  7. Thanks for the feedback, Brink. Working with EQ scares me, since I've yet to develop a good ear for it. I'll give your suggestions some devoted effort, see what I can work out. Thanks again!
  8. Oops. Here's a Soundcloud link that should work :S I appreciate that you folks were interested enough to alert me to the mistake, thank you! This piece is still pretty rough, but I hope at least one or two parts are worth hearing.
  9. Halo's Soundtrack is rightly revered, and I've been humbly trying to arrange one of my favorites. "Unforgotten" beautifully captures a wistful longing and determination that simultaneously uplifts and crushes the heart, in a merciful way. I can't make strings sing like Martin O'Donnell, but I hope to convey some feeling through this piece. And yes, the gunfire sfx is from Halo 3 with some doctoring. Feedback welcome as always. Thanks, and enjoy. Halo_Immortal Memory.mp3
  10. Ah, don't mention it. In those short paragraphs, I exhausted the extent of my musical prowess. Still, hang around the forums and you'll pick up bits and pieces of advice that will help. Good luck, and keep composing.
  11. Well, we'll just wait for the next piece. I'm mostly kidding ya, I've loved how you've worked with that source.
  12. Whoa. Just, just whoa. Impressive work here. The long build up is full of musical anxiety, I couldn't decide where I thought the song would go from it. When it finally gets to the more dancy (that's a word now) part around 2:40 all that tension just washes away. Hope this makes it past the panel!
  13. A fellow fruity composer! Huzzah. I'm no expert on balance either, but I've learned a little. I'd suggest working with individual instrument channel volume before you tweak the master volume. Start with your leads, since those usually are the showcase. For more flexibility, try using the variable channel volume: open the piano roll on the instrument's pattern, then find the "control" button on the lower left side. Click it, and it'll bring down a little menu. Hit "Channel Volume" under "Channel Control", and then you can make an automation that changes the channel volume as it plays the pattern. I'll include a couple pictures, in case my instructions are as confusing to you as they were to me. So yeah. Take a look at your instruments in their plugins, fiddle with them if volume alone isn't enough. Balancing takes a long time, so don't lose too much sleep over it right now. Keep making new songs and experimenting with things like volume, reverb, and EQ, it comes with experience.
  14. Honestly, I was kinda of expecting you to sneak in Zelda's theme, Juke. I really love the energy level of this arrangement: it isn't quite as wild as a festival, but there's a palpable pulse of life and activity. Slap some sample audio of bustling streets in and it'd be just perfect. Well done, well done.
  15. WOAH! That screaming-thing intro though. Love your variations on this repetitive, beloved piece. The piano roll at 1:55-1:58 made my heart skip. The synth lead at 1:04-1:12 was sweet. And that distant, longing outro... ah, it's good. This is nice piece of work, you should be proud. Side thought: does anyone else keep a file of their first composition ever? Sometimes, when I feel like I can't make anything worth listening to, I hit play on it and grate my teeth for 4:22. It's nice to see progress. Thanks for sharing this one!
  16. Always good to hear mixes of Metroid! You've made some mean dubsteppin' here, and its cast as the centerpiece of the song. Impressive as that percussion/bassline is, it gets a little tedious alongside the simplistic melodies of the sources. 2;23-2:40 is one of the more interesting parts, when you elaborated on the item room's motif. Pump some more life into the leads, make 'em a little more equal to the work you put into the dub-step, and this will be even better. Nice work, keep it up!
  17. YES! So glad to hear this make it from the workshop forum to the big screen! Er, whatever we call the official OCR library. It's hard not to smile listening to this. Or at least indulge in some frivolous head bobbing. Anyone having a hard day should come listen to this. Well done, well done.
  18. There's a DAW called Cakewalk? I wasted a whole lot of money... ANYWAYS! I like this new direction. Energy and spunk, punctuated the breather segments and that oh-so-nice minor movement with the organ. Seriously, high-five for that part alone. It flows nicely back into the bold, brave, and peppy mood of the beginning, and I'm quite fond of your melodic variations with that last 45 seconds-ish. Nice work on this piece!
  19. Ah, this is lovely. I remember seeing Crystal Chronicles a long time, and now I wish I gave it a play. The serenity of the first movement, the fluid transition to a more forceful, driving tone, and the lively, springing step before the delicate end. This shares a good story, you should be proud.
  20. Well, you're in the right place for remix posting! I know just about nothing about NiGHTS, but I like this piece. It's got spunk, flows nicely, and has a strong inclination towards toe-tapping. Reminds me of the music of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, for some reason. Almost wish it were longer, sounds like excellent BGM for just about any high-speed activity. Nice work, high-five headed your way!
  21. The Mount Moon VIP lounge, where can I get a membership pass? This is a groovy piece. There's a lofty, enigmatic (though not quite intimidating) character to it, in a strangely relaxing way (especially once you hit 1:36.) It sounds like BGM for the lobby of a somewhat eccentric and aloof resort. I'd say give yourself a pat on the back for this one.
  22. Now where has this been Haydn? This is a sweet little piece. Really appreciate the classical style, I've never been good at replicating (or performing) it. Gotta admit, I was hoping for a Haydn's surprise somewhere in it, but still. Nice work!
  23. Welcome to the VGM scene then! Good to hear some chiptune, let's see what we've got here... -Whimsical Something: Definitely whimsical. A plucky, energetic mass of audio that sort of makes me think of a retro-style RPG's town theme. If that town had a casino or similar justification for big flashing lights. The constant development makes it feel like one is drawing closer and closer to the big attraction. Decidedly fun piece! -Mild Apprehension: Makes me think of caves and encounters with antagonists. The building tension is nicely done, I'm just waiting for some 8Bit lightning to announce the beginning of a boss fight. -Some Alien Place: Yup, the name is accurate. Makes me want to play some Earthbound. The twisting pitch is a nice touch. -It Gets Better: Touching in a way only chippy tunes can be. Also makes me think of Earthbound. Nice work all around!
  24. An orchestral arrangement with a piano solo in the first minute? Sweet. I'm envious of your brass (that's a rare statement, isn't it,) especially right on 1:01 to 1:13. I think a little dramatic emphasis could really give this some (dragon) punch. Take 1:14 to 1:16, one of the repeating parts of the song. The E flat and the F right at the end of the measure. Each time you play that segment, those notes are a little quiet. Each time I heard it, I wanted them to punch out, you know? Probably wouldn't be good for that emphasis each time, but just a suggestion. Anyways, this is good work with some real nice innovation.
  25. It never fails, does it? Great work. Just, just great.
