Difference in EQ Plugins?
Eino Keskitalo and one other reacted to AngelCityOutlaw for a topic
To be completely honest, I don't really see a point in buying a different EQ. The fruity parametric EQ 2 is still my favorite for the reasons Timaeus just said. I can't really think of any features another EQ plugin would have that would be enough to justify spending hard-earned money on. As a side note, I know people more into mixing than the other aspects of music might crucify me for this and say I'm "wrong", but I feel I've gotten better with mixing recently and the most important thing I think I've learned in terms of "frequency balance" is that it's not so much about EQ, but about composition and arrangement. For me, giving up on trying to get things to "fit" by fiddling with the EQ on a bunch of different tracks and instead, if something isn't audible, changing up the voicings, strategic choice of when a particular instrument plays, or just omitting certain parts altogether has yielded far more satisfying results.2 points -
OCRA-0002 - Donkey Kong Country: Kong in Concert
Pavos and one other reacted to Digital Coma for a topic
Hi all, This is Digital Coma, the "director" or organizer for this album. It's been more than a decade since I was last involved in OCR and Kong in Concert feels like a lifetime ago, but I thought I'd drop by and say a few words after all these years. It's pretty neat to see that KiC still has an audience almost 12 years on. Looking back, it's safe to say that I didn't always know what I was doing with what was to be the follow up to OCR's very first remix album. We did things on the fly, we struggled to put together a team, and there were plenty of mistakes made along the way. But what started out as a small summer side project with no lack of naysayers and haters ended up a surprisingly big hit, and in the end we had a solid homage album whose impact in the community I'm happy to see continues today. I won't say much more since I like that there's some legend surrounding how everything came together. But I do want to give thanks to everyone who's enjoyed the music over the years, and a special thanks to the remixers, djp, and OCR for making it all possible. Cheers, DC2 points -

PRC314 - The Coloured Mathematical Pi Round (Mega Man 10 + Streets of Rage 2)
KaS reacted to Bundeslang for a topic
The People's Remix Competition 314 PRCv13-02 Hello everyone and Welcome to the People's Remix Competition! OneUp was the winner of the anniversary round, Trism was the winner of PRC313. Both can win again in PRC314, which will not be a regular round since it will have some additional rules. Let's make this a crazy round. The following (additional) rules apply: - Anyone who makes is song 3 minutes and 14 seconds long, or makes his song 5 minutes and 14 seconds long (which is 314 seconds) gets pi (3,14) bonus points. There is a slack of two seconds, so anything between 3:12 - 3:16 or 5:12 - 5:16 is fine for the bonus. - Anyone who adds a colour in his song title (for example, "The Green remix", "Blue lightning", "Orange ocean"...) also gets pi (3,14) bonus points). - Remixing one of the sources is enough, but everyone who uses both sources in his song (meaning that both sources are recognizable in the song) gets pi (3,14) bonus points. To get this points, it must be mentioned in the song description that both sources are used. This also holds for OneUp and Trism. They must use the source selected by the other to enter (of course, they can remix their own track only as a bonus track, but this time having 20% of the others source and 80% of their own source is fine to enter). If they do not enter, they have a both that counts twice. - One of my posts in the recent PRC topics has been edited in a strange way. The one who replies first with that post in the quote gets pi (3,14) bonus points. Voting will also be a bit different: - All voters can fill in three boxes. Everything is fine, but participants cannot vote for themselves this time and they even can give the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place to the same song. All boxes may be filled in. - Everyone who votes gets 2pi (6,28) bonus points. So it is very recommended to vote. This also holds for non participants, meaning that they theoretically can win this round if the participants do not vote. - If two or more songs tie for 1st place, they get the last place wooden spoon. If two or more songs tie for last place, they win the round. This doesn't hold for multiple voters who ends at last place. Entries must be posted in the by Wednesday January 27th 2016 at 10:59 am ThaSauce time (18:00 UTC, 19:00 GMT), check the ThaSauce page for the exact time left. Two days extra because of the strange rules. You may enter as many mixes as you like and work with as many people as you like on each mix. You are free to create a second ThaSauce account for that, it's needed to be able to upload a second remix. You can also upload it somewhere else and put a download link in this thread Do not make qualitative comments on an entry until the results of the vote have been posted in this thread. Mixers cannot vote for themselves but if they vote they recieve a free first place vote added onto their score. The winner of this round may select the source for PRC315, which will be a normal round. The winner of PRC312 and PRC313, OneUp and Trism, can take part as mentioned above. You can find the full rules list at this page as well. However, take the different rules which are mentioned into account. They apply only in this round. GOOD LUCK! PRC ThaSauce Home Page!1 point -

I have done the unthinkable. I have sold out and got myself a PATREON PAGE. https://www.patreon.com/willrock07 So... Whats the deal? The deal is - I will be posting new stuff! AMAZING STOOF. Stuff that will find its way to Patreon FIRST! Before anywhere else! Plus I will be posting WIPs, which I won't be posting anywhere else. I tend to have unfinished tracks that go to the scrap heap so you'll be seeing that stuff as well! Plus there's rewards like signed copies of albums, remix requests... But perhaps most importantly... As a general rule, I try to keep my fans as happy as I can. I want to make a living out of music, but I want to give my fans as much as I can as soon as I can. I strongly consider OCR to be a large part of the reason for WHY i'm as successful with music as I am, little as that may be, and I reckon quite a large chunk of my fanbase and friends are here... so if you enjoy my music, please consider helping me by pledging a small amount. Its for a good cause! ^-^ You guys are all awesome. Thanks!1 point -

Labyrinth Zone (Jazz Remix) (from Sonic 1)
Smooth4lyfe1987 reacted to T- Ape for a topic
Ehm... yeah, It's jazz-ish, but more hiphop than jazz. I like the feel you're trying to give, but i can't really get around the brass instruments panned left and ride that are not in tune with each other... It's distracting from the rest of the track... Again, I like the arrangement and feel, but there are some points you want to work on with this version.1 point -

There's a case to be made for some clothing, particularly things like suits, where to a point quality and price go together. A bespoke canvassed suit will fit you perfectly and last far longer than an off the rack glued-together polyblend suit, but it'll also cost a hell of a lot more. I saved up for many years to buy a set of navy, charcoal, and black partially canvassed suits on sale at Brooks Brothers and comparing it my old Men's Wearhouse suit is like comparing a guitar bought at target to a custom american made fender.1 point -

Difference in EQ Plugins?
timaeus222 reacted to dannthr for a topic
EQing as a process alters the phase of your program material--this may be important or not to your particular needs, but it is one significant feature that distinguishes EQ processors. Some processors will have useful visualizations or Mid/Side processing or other features that you find useful, try them out, see what works for you. I'm a big fan of the Fab Filter plug-ins and Pro-Q is incredibly useful for spectral surgery--I like the visualization, it's easy to place the q-point I want, there are lots of options for phase control, etc. Despite that, I definitely remember loading up a PSP AudioWare parametric EQ (I think it was their Classic Q or their Console Q) and while it didn't leave me with a lot of control, it was instantly musical and I appreciated the ease at which I arrived at a pleasing sound. Not that I probably couldn't have achieved the same sound with Pro-Q, but simply that I probably wouldn't have done it in just that way or approached the problem in the same way--simply because the interface was different. Ultimately, this is about workflow and I have a selection of EQs that I will employ based on the needs of the situation. For what it's worth, my two main EQs are FabFilter Pro-Q and Brainworx bx_Digital_v2.1 point -

WillRock is an extremely talented musician and a legit good guy well worth giving a little support to for all of the quality work he's given over the last half decade. Undertale - Spider Dance Remix
T- Ape reacted to HankTheSpankTankJankerson for a topic
Awesome static art in the video. Where do people get this stuff!? (In a good way, baby!) Nothing all that original until 1:20. I think using a synth package that sounded different than the original 8-bit synths could have done this arrangement a favor. During the first couple minutes, I thought I was listening to a slowed down version of the original. Your development section is enticing, I just wished you carried it even further away from the original so I could here your interpretation! At 2:21, you have an awesome syncopated 16th note motive (3+3+2) that I just LOVE. I wish I could have heard some more of that business. Getting mileage out of the source material... I debated arranging this, but I wasn't quite up to the challenge until I heard your cover of it. Thank you for opening a creative door for me. I was having a hard time developing the motives in this song - will think further on it.1 point -

Com'on the most of the 80's had a fun style and a distinct vibe...a lot in the 90's was so drab and depressing ( flannel, grunge, gangsta rap, Blossom) until like 97, then things got more playful and enjoyable.1 point -
Rival Schools - Pacific High 1
T- Ape reacted to Saitoshi_Sama for a topic
Rival Schools was one of my favorite fighting games that Capcom produced and one I feel they should reboot along with it's sequel: Project Justice. This is the first theme of the Pacific High School team. I added a touch of the original sound to it with the trumpets but decided to make it a little more modern as opposed to the original. I made it longer than the original, but I tried to add a few elements to show the struggle of Roy, Tiffany, and Bowman being brainwashed as the story reveals. I also tried to add elements of each character in this theme. Roy with his cocky and cool nature. Tiffany with her bubbly and out there personality. And Bowman with his gentle, yet massive presence. Hopefully, I've captured in this sound what I want you guys to hear. HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY!!!1 point -
Halo-(Walk in the Woods, Covenant Dance) Remix
T- Ape reacted to PlanarianHugger for a topic
https://soundcloud.com/planarianhugger/not-my-fault-someone-put-a-wall-in-my-way This is my remix of A Walk in the Woods and Covenant Dance from Halo 1 I made for PRC312. It got 6th out of 12 entrances. The sources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t97u9qmgwN0 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fPFtDdqnJI The first part is the beginning of Covenant Dance with the bass line of A Walk in the Woods followed by the main melody A Walk in the Woods. Then the entirety of Covenant Dance. After this the background continues with the melody from A Walk in the Woods and repeats the back and forth of A Walk in the Woods and Covenant Dance changing as it continues till the end. I enjoyed making this and any advice or critique is encouraged.1 point -
First instinct here is that the mixing is a bit off - The drums are completely buried, boost the volume and compress the kick/snare a bit to give them a bit of punch. Sometimes things are too exposed, like that Pulsewave stuff at 1:07. Seems to me like you've got the right idea of where to level things mixing wise because everything that requires the focus is right, its just you've over done it a tad. Also, one or two of the samples aren't great but with better mixing you might be able to make up for some of the sound design flaws. Sometimes the arrangement just... stops. I suggest you either remove them or try to edit them in some way cause atm, it just sounds like the track has stopped, then it starts again! It puts you out of the mood a tad. Also, some of the instrumentation isn't quite fitting with your aesthetic in terms of reverb. The pulsewave for example... no reverb at all. It sticks out in a bad way cause the rest of your track isn't as dry. A lot of critique there for ya, sorry if I seem a tad harsh, it is a good track but it requires quite a bit of work to get it up to OCR level since thats what you're aiming for. Keep working at it1 point

Double Dragon - Title Theme & Mission Screen
T- Ape reacted to timaeus222 for a topic
The mixing feels weird; it's like you took something that compositionally sounds like an 80s rock song and applied orchestral-style mixing. As a result, there's some substantial low-mids muddiness, mainly from the piano and pad, like at 0:52 - 0:57, for example. The drums also feel buried under the marimba and piano sometimes (like at 0:06 - 0:34), so they could use some careful compression to make them punchier and more exciting. The drum writing can also be more energetic and less stiff. So, try toning it down on the piano and pad reverb, liven up those drums, and perhaps hone in more on that 80s rock feel that you seem to have accidentally somewhat landed on here.1 point -
Well, now that PRC312 is over I wanted to share my newest Needle Man remix (yeah I know, same old, same old). I know the arrangement is relatively basic, but nonetheless I'm pretty happy about my improved production quality. Original: Remix:1 point
